Excellent hotel if you're looking for a quiet local experience

I have stayed at the Alfred Hotel on two separate occasions. The first one was for a night's stay where I had a really good first impression of the room I was given and the location of the place. The second time I came to Amsterdam, I picked the Alfred Hotel again, and this time stayed for two weeks instead of one, as I had originally planned.
It's a great place for single people, couples, families, or people on a work trip. The rooms are clean and spacious, and most of them offer you a view on the streets where you get to see nice typical Dutch buildings. The best thing about this hotel is definitely the location. You get to have a nice, quiet local experience but are also not far from the touristy places as you can reach them within a 20-minute walk. The hotel is located in Zuid, and it's no less than a 10-minute walk from the Rijksmuseum if you feel like a cultural day out. Across the street, you have a little square surrounded by restaurants. I usually had my morning coffee at le Pain Quotidien. You also have an excellent gelato shop next to it and a nice panel of Italian restaurants down the street. There is also a tram stop two minutes away from the hotel if you don't feel like walking, and Vondelpark is not too far from it as well. I actually discovered this hotel as I was walking back from getting my PCR test, so needless to say if you don't want to take transportation for your test, you have two test centers nearby. If you travel alone, especially as a woman, you will feel completely safe in this neighborhood. I would walk back to the hotel at 1 am and feel at ease.
The staff is something else. First of all, they are quite flexible with the check-in time. The first time I checked in was in the morning as I had just landed, so I didn't have to wait until 2 pm to get in my room. I also extended my stay at the Alfred Hotel a total of five times and every time was hassle-free. They let me keep my room as I didn't want to move my things, but on the last night I asked to change rooms due to mosquitos (my fault, I kept the windows open in the scorching heat) and the lady who was at the reception was extremely sweet. She showed me different rooms so I could have my pick. The receptionists are friendly and will be at your disposal if you need anything. I was sad to leave as I had gotten used to them. Take my word as I am quite reserved.
I'm definitely coming back to the Alfred Hotel when I come back to Amsterdam and I highly recommend this place. For the price that you pay, you are given more than expected.
Excellent hotel if you're looking for peace and tranquility

The Alfred Hotel is a nice, small boutique hotel out the outskirts of the city centre, but is accessible by two tram lines. It is right nearby both the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum, and about 10 minutes away by tram to the centre of the city. I really recommend if you enjoy peace and quiet at night after a long day of sightseeing.
The staff are dedicated, wonderful people that make you feel right at home. They offer a continental breakfast at a small cost. You have access to the SportCity fitness center for a discounted rate as well. Because of the pandemic, the restaurant is closed, but food delivery services are easy enough to come to the hotel at a reasonable time.
The room was quaint, but comfy. The bed is very comfortable. The room is well kept. They have a Nespresso machine for your coffee needs. The bathroom is very clean, but very small. Keep that in mind when taking long showers, as you might need to mop up a little bit afterwards.
Overall, it was a great experience. I truly recommend the place.
Taken my money without me even visiting.

I booked this hotel in 2019, around September / October time for me and my partner. We were meant to go at the end of March. Of course many things changed by then due to the coronavirus pandemic. Amsterdam had begun to lockdown, all the plans we had made for when we were meant to be going had cancelled and refunded us and the UK was locking down just as we were meant to be flying out. Our airline were very understand and offered to put our money on a gift card so we could use it for another time when the pandemic had calmed. I wish the same could be said for this hotel.
Now I completely understand that if you book a non refundable booking, you cannot get the money back. Which is fair enough. However, I contacted the hotel personally to explain the situation (which obviously everyone knew about as it’s a global situation), and asked if anything could be done. They completely refused and said I would have to pay the full amount (I was paying it off in instalments). I explained that I understood the non refundable policy but would it be possible to change the dates as we are currently going through a pandemic that no one had any idea about what to do. They completely refused to budge, wouldn’t even let me change the dates, they then just ignored my emails and I never heard from them again. I went through the company I was paying them through and they paused the payments until investigation was complete. This took nearly a year and I ended up having to pay the hotel even though I didn’t even get to stay there. I’m not naive to the fact that everyone has suffered during this pandemic. But this hotel has taken nearly £300 from me for no reason and wouldn’t even be flexible in changing the dates. I understand in normal circumstances this not being able to happen, but you would think a global pandemic would allow for some flexibility.
I’m now out nearly £300 and didn’t even get to go to the hotel or the city. I just think it’s greedy if I’m honest. Treating people like this is awful and I will never recommend this hotel to anyone.
Lovely authentic hotel with 5 star luxury feel to it

Loved our stay in the Alfred hotel. A charming, clean and centrally located hotel with very friendly and professional staff. What I especially liked was the top quality bed (I slept so good!) and the very comfy (new) rain shower; it gave a very luxurious, 5-star feeling to the place. Our room was quiet, quite big even and had everything you need, including a good coffeemaker. We booked an arrangement including beer tasting appetizers, dinner and beer tasting with a group of friends, all with Covid-safe measures. Fantastic! It felt like pre-corona type of a fun night and we had the best, authentic Italian pizza's. We were so well taken care of, including a great breakfast in the morning. I believe these types of events will be organised more in the future. Highly recommendable and totally safe!

One or two days before the check in we got an email about redirecting us to alfred hotel because princcess would close temporarily. We didn't want that because it is more far from the center but they wouldn't give our money back. They forced us to stay in alfred otherwise we would pay the money of the booking as a fine!!!! We went to alfred and they put us in a room 2x2 under the basement and they decided that it would be our room. Not even rats stay there. We went crazy and asked for another room. After that they gave us a decent one on the 2nd floor. But they had already destroyed our mood, we had to protest otherwise we would end up in this disgusting room and generally the crew that put us in the room was rude and didn't care at all. Sorry to the rest of the crew, they were okay. And the stay there was also okay but, really so bad experience. I put 2 stars instead of 1 only for the change of the room after all that.
