Amazing views from the comfort of well-designed place

Normally I read architect-designed and eco-hotel and I run a mile, as often, it is poor style over even poorer substance, however, the Apacheta is both very well designed which makes you feel extremely comfortable, and it is actually run pretty much on sustainable lines: No aircon, no swimming pool, local produce for breakfast and dinner. We had a room on the first floor, with natural aircon by way of the shower which has no roof and thus creates a natural airflow when the balcony door is left open. A swimming pool when you have the beach just there in front of you (not even a road to cross) is just unnecessary and an affront in the driest city on earth anyway. Breakfast with fresh fruit and juice from the oasis valleys nearby was ace. Staff super-friendly and ask them about what to do in Arica, they have lots of nice ideas!
Attractive and unusual on the beach

A high concept wooden hotel on the beach. Very modern. Helpful pleasant staff. All rooms face the water and have a huge glass window and door to a small balcony and the sounds of the sea. The building seems to absorb heat and I had to open the door to let the wind in. The room was fine but with too much thought for design and not enough for practicality. The small round sink was difficult not to splash and the tap control was weirdly a long way from the sink. Similarly the power outlets were near the floor and not convenient for charging electronics. Food was fine especially breakfast which was served fruit , yogurt cup and a small bowl of egg and sausage. Nice touch was an individual cafetiere of strong coffee
What a view

We stayed at Apacheta for 3 nights and what an amazing view to wake up to. You are right on the coast, and so can watch the seabirds, pelicans, and if you are lucky seals swimming out from the rocks. In the evening you can sit on the balcony out from your room, and watch the sun go down, and the waves, while drinking a glass of wine. A magical spot. The staff were amazing and really friendly, with helpful suggestions on where to visit and where to eat if you don't want to eat at the hotel. Its a bit of a walk into town but don't let this put you off, as the location of the hotel makes up for it. Breakfast was superb with plenty of tasty fresh options including fruit and eggs.
Spectacular place to stay

Very cold (no heating or A/C)

Regular. Service is great, the facilities, quite regular and worn out; I would definitely stay in Antay next time. The sheets were not in the best condition, the bed was not comfortable either. The water pressure was low and not hot enough. The rooms do not have television, which I think is OK, but what is unforgivable is that they do not have heating (or air conditioning), and it is very cold, so much that my companion caught a cold. The entire Hall of the hotel is open to the outside with no windows at the 2nd floor, which makes the nights and mornings very cold, from walking down the hall to having breakfast in the "restaurant" that is the reception, and it can be windy. Finally, breakfast is very scarce, they give 1 scrambled egg per person, in a mini dish. one! And when asked if they could give me another, they told me that it is 1 per person but that I could eat more cheese and ham if I was hungry, but it was of very poor quality. The same with the juice that came in a glass of about 150cc. I would not go back, but I repeat, the service, very good.
