A (K)night in the Tower

Reviewed 14 october, 2019

We splurged on a Tower Room in Schnellenberg, and it was indeed rather fine. A large suite with a handsome carved ceiling and a splendidly regal bathroom, extensive views in all directions (yes, even from the bathroom), and with its own spiral staircase. Comfortable, elegant, too, but I suppose to get the full “Lord of the Manor” effect one should have had a small army of servants and valets and lady’s maids coming and going. Dinner in the restaurant was a bit curate’s eggish: the “Müllerin Art” trout was rather muddy - more like bream, really - but my venison goulash passed muster, and the tuna carpaccio starter was a fine dish. Decent wine, though a bit pricey to my way of thinking. Service was attentive. The à la carte restaurant itself is a very imposing affair, albeit with cosy corners. Breakfast was excellent, in a different and equally impressive room with large panorama windows. The whole overnight experience was very pleasant, without being utterly jaw-dropping or earth-shattering, and I was somewhat surprised to see in an establishment of this calibre that no complimentary bottles of water were provided in the room – I think this was the ONLY hotel in a two-week sojourn in Germany that failed this test, and this was comfortably the most expensive stay we had. The hotel is popular with wedding parties, particularly on Fridays, when the on-site chapel is in heavy use. There’s nothing wrong with this, of course, but one might feel a bit like an uninvited guest. There are great walks to be had in the vicinity and a generally relaxed vibe among the staff to soften the otherwise slightly “over the top” feel of the place. Convenient parking, but still a fair bit of carrying to be done – castle turrets don’t usually come with lifts! Recommended, but really only as a “one-off” thing.

Lovely castle

Reviewed 15 october, 2018

Stayed here as an extended birthday weekend in early October. I have always loved castles and finally could stay for a night in one. Burg Schnellenberg certainly did not disappoint. Our room was in a tower, so a proper castle feel to it, winding narrow staircase and all. The room was very big, with equally big bathroom with a bath tub. High ceilings, self-controlled heating, comfy bed, bit of an old bulding smell, but that's part of the package. Lovely views onto 4 sides of the building, including a view from the bathroom. We had a package that included a tower room stay, dinner, tickets to the caves and a tour of the castle. Unfortunately the tour of the castle was not available on the day we stayed, but we were offered an aperitif and a souvenir instead which we were totally satisfied with and the whole situation was treated in a nice and professional manner. The dinner did not disappoint either, portions were proper german big, and the food was tasty. There are enough parking spots in the castle grounds, and driving through the castle gates was a nice experience in itself. There are also some walking routes in the nearby forest, so if the weather permits it is nice to enjoy a refreshing walk before dinner. There is also a spa at the hotel which we didn't try cause the weather was so good, but it is nice for a rainy day perhaps. Overall highly recommend to stay for a night here, nice alternative to modern hotels.

Absolutely amazing and beautiful hotel

Old beautiful castle in amazingly beautiful surroundings. Not to comfortable beds, but everything else compensated for that. Great food, and really nice staff. I was visiting Burg Schnellenberg on business, but I’m defiantly coming back with my family, or with my wife some day.

Superb night at stunning castle

Absolutely great night at this hotel. The room was huge and one of the most luxurious bathrooms ever seen. Staff were really friendly and helpful. We ate an amazing meal at the restaurant our best in 2 weeks in Germany. Lots of free car parking. Really peaceful and relaxing. Good value for money.

Out of the mainstream

Stay in a proper castle outside of Attendorn in the surrounding hills. We stayed in the gate-building. Room on the first floor, That measnt mounting staircases because there is no elevator. The room was OK, the bathroom small. Everything was clean. There is ample parkingspace for cars albeit that most find a place a bit down the entrance road next to the stables. So bring an umbrella! Very good restaurant with pleasant a bit romantic atmosphere. Dishes are very good and copious.
