Great place for a short break

Reviewed 16 november, 2021

The rooms were comfortable and spacious, the breakfast delicious. We had dinner there on both nights, and the food was really tasty; their own pork was particularly good. It was nice that the menu changed slightly on the second day. The whole stay felt very relaxed and friendly. The area was great for walking too.

Just shabby, no chic

Reviewed 7 november, 2021

Visited recently for bonfire night. It was very busy but surely this is no excuse for unbelievably rude staff. I am aware from reviews that the owner is habitually rude, but his behaviour towards paying customers appears to have been passed on to his staff. When we asked for a hot chocolate, we were met with a shrug and ‘does it look like we serve hot chocolate?’. No call for a response like this. Clearly they have been taught that this is an acceptable way to speak to people. I wonder if they realise how the customer service industry works? The general air of shabby-chic-turned-just-plain-grubby didn’t add any appeal. Chairs look like they’ve been lifted out of skips. And they look like they were turfed out for a reason! Seats have mould on them. Ugh. Is it really that hard to have clean, usable furniture? Or are they going for that dumpster vibe? Certainly shan’t be visiting again. There are so many better pubs who deserve support in these times.

A 70th Birthday party to remember at the Royal Oak

Reviewed 1 november, 2021

I stayed at the Royal Oak with twelve other people for a Big Birthday weekend. From the start we were looked after extremely well. Tim in the bar/restaurant was a genial and gently eccentric host who made us feel welcome and catered for the needs of an eclectic group in a way that I don't think would have occurred in a more formal setting. The food was delicious, particularly the organic, farm-reared bacon and sausages; the bar/restaurant unpretentious and welcoming with a log fire. The rooms were lovely with comfortable beds, great bathrooms and decoration (different in each room) - a glorious far cry from some chain hotels I could mention. Some of us did a farm safari which was fascinating and inspiring with adorable piglets and a great respect for all the beings that inhabit that land. A gorgeous location within easy reach of the Ridgeway. I can't recommend it highly enough if you want a country break. Big thanks to Helen Browning, Tim and all their staff.

Fun lovely quirky bed and breakfast

Reviewed 18 october, 2021

Fantastic location for a family get together. Gorgeous setting, beautiful rooms-all different and individual but equally well equipped, clean and comfortable. All rooms set round a courtyard garden area with a communal sitting room/games room/kitchen-all essentials there and an honesty bar. There were 20 of us and it was perfect. We had an evening meal at the Royal Oak pub (part of the bed and breakfast location) and were exceptionally well fed-lovely grazing boards to suit meat eaters, veggies and kids. Breakfast was another selection of grazing boards to suit all. A thoroughly quirky, individual and fun place to stay-very lovingly done and fantastic service too-thoroughly recommend.
