Decent--Has Room to Improve

Reviewed 16 september, 2021

I have wanted to try out the Sofitel Bogota Hotel for quite some time now and finally had a chance to do so recently. I only stayed one night but felt that it was more than enough to share my impressions of the hotel. In summary, this is a solid choice for a place to stay while in Bogota. The hotel is comfortable, very well-located in the heart of Bogota's shopping and entertainment district, and features very comfortable beds that Sofitel is known for in general. I also got a pretty good rate so I can't complain there. All employees were friendly and helpful overall. L'Occitane bathroom amenities which is a favorite brand of mine although besides (small) hand soap they use "communal" amenities in the shower such as shampoo, body wash, conditioner, etc, which I know is environmentally-friendly but I think I'm not really a fan of. Oh well. There was certainly some room for improvement though. The hotel's restaurant has a pretty limited menu for lunch/dinner (I didn't have time to try breakfast) and when I went in for dinner, while there was only one other table of guests, it was sort of awkward to get the attention of the restaurant staff. It seemed like there was one bartender and one waiter (maybe?) and I almost felt ignored for a moment as they were focused on other things. However, when they did notice me they were decently friendly. The club sandwich was only mediocre at best and the "egg salad" that comes on it is kind of gross. The other areas for improvement, in my opinion, in order to really be at a five star level (as they advertise themselves to be, and as the Sofitel is known to be in general as a company) is to provide turndown service (which the Four Seasons next door does) as well as to invest in better towels in the rooms. The towels in my room were some of the worst I've had in any hotel in a long time--paper thin, rough, cheap...sad. I'd like to think that the towels should be just as high quality as the bedding--in this case the bedding was great while the towels were the opposite. Oh well, at least I got a good exfoliation when drying off! This is a recommendable hotel especially if you get a good price. However, it is no Four Seasons so if that's the kind of level of service and amenities that you're looking for then go next door. The Sofitel Bogota in my opinion is more of a four and a half star hotel--keep that in mind and your expectations will probably not exceed the reality of the place.

Top notch

This hotel lived up to the Sofitel name. Unlike it sister property in Cartagena this boutique property was well worth it. Not a bad value. The room is not extraordinary but the bed is one of the most comfortable hotel beds I have ever stayed in which after a long flight was well needed. Staff and management were incredible, well trained, attention to detail and kind. Location was spot on in the most secure and safe parts of the city and made my time in Bogota a pleasure.

Amazing experience

I agonized between this and higher trip advisor rated Hyatt. Many of the reviews here I read that werent good seemed to be about renovations which are now done. I almost always, when I have a choice opt for Sofitel and this did not dissapoint. While this may not have been a five star US hotel it certainly was here. Smaller property which I like. As with most sofitels the staff was unbelievable and accomodating. Unlike another big chain we are staying in now every staff member can speak English. The bed is to do die for. If there is anything you want out of a room after a long flights its a very comfy bed and this one was one of the best. Staff went way out of their way all the time. Rooms arent opulent but its all you need. Location is key and this area is the most safe and secure with extra security in the area. Hands down best hotel option in Bogota.

HIT N MISS .. MOSTLY MISS

Location of this Sofitel, 10 out of 10. Check in process, 10 out of 10. The lobby, while small, is beautiful and our check in process went quite smoothly. The room was nice, clean, my favorite part was the window actually opened for fresh air and we had a view of the street down below. The beds were super comfy. The staff who worked in the restaurant where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast in the morning were all superb. So why 1 star? Before we left on our final day my husband requested laundry service. We had been travelling almost two weeks and he needed some basics washed. It was explained to him that the off site laundry service was closed, and so the hotel would offer to launder his items onsite at the same cost as the offsite location which was roughly $40 USD. DONE. When the laundry arrived at the room pressed and folded, it came with a receipt $145 USD. With the Colombian peso at a 4 to 1 exchange rate, it's hard to believe laundering some t-shirts and underwear even at a posh 5 star resort in America would cost $145. My husband was livid and went downstairs to straighten out the misunderstanding. It took two additional managers to adjust the pricing to what had been agreed upon. At the end of the day we still paid almost $100 to have these items washed but we were just happy to check out at that point. What happened next is what was really alarming. We received notification that our flight home had been cancelled, and they changed our flight to a much earlier one which would require we hop in the next cab and get to the airport ASAP. While I fumbled on the phone with the airline to try and secure our tickets, my husband brought our bags to the front of the hotel and called a cab. It was at this point that he realized the front of house employee had called security. LOL SECURITY! Some guy came around from the side of the hotel and two employees including the front desk clerk came running out. One said hello Miss! Miss! We need your credit card! You did not pay!" I am on the phone with the airline at this point and confused I said "one moment!" As I walked back inside she stated she needed my credit card to charge the additional fees we had incurred with the dry cleaning etc. Ok I have stayed at A LOT of hotels in my time, A LOT. Never, ever, in any other country, have I needed to present my credit card upon check in and then AGAIN upon CHECK OUT. The point is, while yes it was an inconvenience, it was THE WAY THEY TREATED US - as if we were trying to RUN OFF without paying LOL!!! Calling security!? Seriously!? My husband just had Achilles tendon repair surgery and can barely walk let alone run HAHAHA not to mention where exactly are we running off to with half a dozen suitcases !!?? I am much easier going and laughed this off, however my husband was DISGUSTED. He felt profiled, targeted and treated like a criminal. I don't know how many people are enjoying vacations at Sofitel Bogota, but just know, THEY'RE ONTO YOU! HAHAHAHA. Was our overall experience good? YES. But we wished we had stayed in the FOUR SEASONS. Do yourself a favor... STAY ELSEWHERE!

Short stay in Sofitel Bogota

Reviewed 28 january, 2021

Excellent staff, very professional, caring. Difficult time to be a tourist, but the staff in the hotel and the adjacent restaurant made our stay a wonderful experience. They arranged for a short tour of the countryside and the driver/tour guide was a very knowledgeable and entertaining young man. We enjoyed every minute of our stay in Bogota. The food was great, the service excellent.
