Mandarin Hotel in Boston

Reviewed 29 december, 2021

Very disappointed! No bar or Restaurant as we knew when we booked.Continental breakfast had dry Blueberry muffins and dry Chocolate croissants. No water bottles in sight in room . We were told at checkout that water was in where the coffee was- what? We didn’t make coffee. Water needs to be displayed. The Spa is only open a few days a week. The staff with the exception of the Doorman seemed bored. Parking is $65 for overnight. No life in Lobby!!! Very overpriced for nothing special!

A luxury hotel experience that was enjoyable in every way

It was a luxury hotel experience that was enjoyable in every way. But what we liked best was that the staff-- door people, porter, front desk attendees, everyone-- were genuinely kind. Some luxury hotels have the idea that their staff should be a little snobbish and stiff. The staff at the Mandarin were both highly refined and kind. For instance, when we returned from an outing and the desk attendee had a message to convey to us, she came out from behind the desk to meet us in the lobby and give us the message. The porter caught our eye to offer a quick smile and hello every time we came down to the lobby-- a gesture of kindness but also serving as a reminder that he was there to assist should we need it. When we left, a flock of attendees appeared and loaded the car, walked around it to make sure all was well with the vehicle, ushered us inside, and, with jubilant farewells, sent us on our way. The staff's kind attendance made us feel like we were a part of the hotel and our stay felt all the more luxurious as the result.

Excellent hotel but services are limited

We stayed for 3 nights in August while our daughter visited college in the area. We loved the spacious rooms, location to restaurants, shopping, baseball game, etc. Perfect location. There were always taxi's waiting right next door. Our room faced the courtyard so our sleep was quiet. Housekeeping was great and our room was always cleaned early in the day. A few things to note: 1. There was no restaurant or bar as it is currently being renovated. While plenty of alternatives in the area, not something you would expect from a 5 star hotel. 2. It was 98 degrees our entire time in Boston, I'm not sure how we got so unlucky with a major heat wave but the hotel could have provided more than just the 2 water dispensers in the lobby that were always empty. I know these temps aren't normal - but management could have made more of an effort. 3. There was a shooting right outside of the hotel. Someone drove by and shot up the bank directly across the street on a busy evening. The hotel went into lockdown. People ran for their lives. We were locked in the backroom of the Prudential Eately while police were determining the location of the shooter. When we got back to the hotel, cops were in the lobby questioning guests. Thankfully no one was injured and this is not a common occurrence. I am brining this up because management never addressed this with the guests. There was never a note slipped under our doors, there was never a reference to our safety or their security. I am from a big city but that was the closest I have ever come to a shooting. Police were looking for damage to our hotel building as they thought bullets might have also been directed in our location. Bottom line - a scary, yet random occurrence. Mgmt might want to have a better plan for these type of events in the future. Would I stay here again - yes. Are there many other great hotels in Boston - yes. This is a fine choice if you get the right price.

Not delivering luxury for the price

We stayed at the Mandarin during the Marathon weekend in Boston. If you are a spectator of the race, it is hard to beat the location, just a few hundred yards from the finish line. Depending on where the security checkpoints are, another hotel further down Boylston, like The Lenox for example, might be even better since you could - as a non-racer - get access closer to the finish. If you are a racer, then re-accessing the Mandarin from the finish is not too problematic since you can access through the attached shopping center The Prudential Center. The Prudential Center is also a convenient respite for non-racers who dont want to try and navigate crowds and checkpoints but just want to watch finishers outside the hotel front doors. About the hotel itself, a bit disappointing.

Great hotel in a great city

Great stay, impeccable room, as MO member got a late checkout and complementary breakfast every day, very close to the Haynes Convention Center, property is surrounded by great restaurants, as the hotels’s main restaurant is closed right now. Room service was great.
