Great Hotel, good location, excellent breakfasts

Reviewed 24 october, 2021

Hotel is in a great location not far from bowness on windermere, decor downstairs is great (very quirky). Hotel rooms are a bit dated but the deluxe double we had was large and bathroom was nice and the bed was comfortable. Staff were mostly friendly, polite and welcoming except for one who let the team down, the barman was quite rude and seemed to roll his eyes when a drinks order was made like he didn't want to be there or do his job. Breakfast was good with a decent amount of choice on the cooked menu and cereals, fruit and juices all available on the continental. Overall was a good experience would definitely return just one staff member needs some customer service training!

September staycation

Large, comfortable room. However our superior deluxe room was on the third floor. There is not a lift and two ladies, both in their late sixties and one with a back problem were left to carry cases and bags up three flights of stairs. It would have been nice if the young gentleman in reception had offered to assist. We were also somewhat perplexed to find that the second , cheaper, room we had booked had two large single beds forming a very large double whereas we had two small singles. I don’t think floor space, an empty mini fridge and two large crystal water glasses justifies £40 extra per night. While the food was good it was not the menu we expected . We had checked on the website prior to booking and believed that we both would find dishes to suit our taste and needs however this was not the case. The decor is fresh but a bit heavy on the Beatrix Potter influence for our taste. The gardens are pleasant and ideal for an afternoon cocktail. The staff were generally pleasant and helpful though one of the more senior members of the restaurant /bar staff could learn from their younger colleagues.

Great location but…

Communal areas of the hotel are amazing - all Beatrice Potter themed and they really have put a lot of effort into it. The rooms really do need attention though - our bathroom and carpet appeared to be newish, but everything else was extremely old and dated. Had to request a hairdryer as ours were broken; they had replaced the iron and board but not removed the old ones, as they were fixed to the wall; windows really needed a deep clean (large velux window in the room and when we opened it, a lot of debris fell in); and the mattress really does need replacing. We knew the rooms were modern so expected them to be dated, but for the price we did expect the standard to be higher. Breakfast was really nice - hearty portions to set you up for a day of hiking and they’re accommodating with requests for variations. We weren’t able to book for dinner as every night we stayed (3 nights) they had events on which was slightly annoying. We found this to be particularly annoying when they were clearly understaffed so in the evenings you had to find someone to serve at the bar and in the morning, the tables were all littered with glasses and food plates from the night before, which wasn’t great (nor did it smell great!). Everywhere we ate or drank in Lake District said they were struggling with lack of staff so I think Lindeth Howe need to make a decision - do they want to host events at the cost of reducing their customer care for the paying hotel guests; or focus solely on the hotel guests who would inevitably spend far more in the restaurant and bar then they are currently, as they can’t get a table/get served. Bar is well stocked and reasonably priced. Great gin and whisky selections on offer. On check in we weren’t really given any information for example, that the front door is locked at night and you don’t need to panic, your room key will open it! Would have been nice to have had a brief tour, be given taxi numbers, asked if we wanted any recommendations for restaurants, walks etc. You’re just left to your own devices which you expect from a large hotel, I did expect a more personal touch. There was an issue with the fire alarm going off on our second night (1am until 3am!) during which time everyone had to stand outside in the freezing cold. There was no fire, just a fault with the alarm but the poor waitress (who sleeps on the grounds) was left by herself as the only person on site, no sight of the managers or owners at any point. No head count, one of the guests called the fire brigade as we had no idea at that stage whether there was a fire or not, no update or communication while we waited outside and most importantly, no explanation in the morning - no one mentioned it! I expected even just a note under the door to apologise for the inconvenience or just a friendly “sorry about last night” but instead, the young lady who was up until 4am sorting the issue by herself was there with a huge smile on her face (and very tired eyes!) serving us breakfast at 8am. All in all - a lovely hotel which is in a great location, but the owners/manager really need to be much more present.

Had a bar snack lunch and a super Sauvignon Blanc

Reviewed 26 september, 2021

We walked in without booking ahead and asked if we could have a coffee. The young woman on reception was not fazed at all, she immediately took us through to the most beautiful, quirky young area. We enjoyed a really super coffee and two shortbread biscuits which were served on a slate platter, very impressive. So impressed with the ambience and friendliness of the staff we asked if we could stay for a bar snack. Yes of course was the reply, even though a party of 30 had turned up for their lunch party which was set up in a beautiful room just off the bar area. Whilst they were waiting for all of their party to arrive they filled the lounge area and everyone chatted to everyone. It lived up to a 'country house experience'. Tony the Manager has been there many years as have many of the staff. That says a lot! They are not now dog friendly, but our dogs are trained to go into kennels for their holiday... this hotel is worth a visit, even with this in mind. A few years ago the lounge areas were refurbished. The money they make gets re-invested back into it. How many businesses can say that. Every credit to Tony and his team at The Lindeth Howe. See you again. V & D x

Welcoming & Relaxing

Reviewed 14 september, 2021

All the staff from the receptionist, bar tenders, waiting staff, one of the chefs out on his break in the garden, Tony and Claire and last but not least the cleaner, oh and the old gentlemen playing the piano made us both feel very welcome and were very attentive. Yes there was a bit of a wait at the bar as the last reviewer mentioned and I had to go and get someone a few times, but this didn't detract from the overall experience and to be fair they were busy elsewhere as there wasn't many people in the seating area. The house and gardens are beautiful, with a lovely walk down the bottom leading to some wooded area which looks like it leads onto some walking trails taking you to the water front, 20 minutes walk away. Having a good chef on board can make or break the restaurant experience and he or she provided an excellent and consistent standard of dinner and breakfast throughout our weekend stay. We stayed in the Potter room, spacious and light with a nice view of the garden. Overall a friendly and relaxing experience, we are pleased my wife and I chose this place for our wedding and can see why many people return to Lindeth Howe. Thank you again to all the staff, your best asset !
