More about the hotel
Love what they’ve done with the place.
We travel to Buffalo often usually staying with family but due to the pandemic we decided to stay at Hotel Henry for an experience. The architecture is amazing. The details had to have had so much dedication. Our room was awesome, comfortable quiet and plenty of room. There were few people staying which added to the mystique. (Albeit a bit spooky). We explored where we could but were disappointed that we could not enter the towers or of course the restaurant. ( no fault of really anyone’s). I will return when we can do that.
Disappointed
I want to start this off by saying it was in NO WAY any employees' fault. I'm sure they did all they could given the situation, but it was really disappointing. I have literally never written a review in my entire life, but feel it's necessary to warn future travelers. I would recommend not traveling to The Mansion or Hotel Henry during the winter. We booked the mansion because it was a literal dream destination. We wanted to treat ourselves because we were celebrating 6 years together that weekend and the reviews/ luxury that you get at The Mansion were incomparable. The day before we were suppose to arrive, we got a call that something broke with (I believe) their water system. I was so heartbroken because we were really, really looking forward to experiencing next level service. Alas, not much we could do, so they offered to send us to Hotel Henry and said it was also a historic hotel so I thought it would be the same level. It's not. There is no butler service, chauffer, nightly drinks, or complimentary breakfast. I don't mean to sound "that way" because we aren't. I was just so disappointed because we never get to experience that level of luxury and were pawned off to just another hotel. Don't get me wrong, the outside of Hotel Henry is gorgeous, but we had 0 immensities inside. We mentioned the drastic downgrade and were given a brown paper bag with a yogurt, piece of bread, and piece of fruit as our compensation. Definitely not the breakfast The Mansion prides itself on. The interior is also just like any other hotel at the Henry. Then, halfway through our stay, we were called AGAIN to say we would need to move hotels because now Hotel Henry's heat broke. Instead, of the hassle and getting moved to another, lesser hotel, we decided to cut our trip short and just go home. We let them know, we did not wish to move again and to please cancel any further reservations at other locations. Even though we were not staying for the 4th night, were at a downgraded location, and did not receive all the amenities, we STILL GOT CHARGED FOR STAYING ALL 4 NIGHTS AS IF IT WERE AT THE MANSION! These historic hotels are beautiful, but they are not equip for the winter time. What are the chances it would happen twice in one stay? Anyway, it was just kind of sad. :(
A truly unique experience
From the moment I laid eyes on the property, I knew I was in store for something really special. As a super-fan of historical architecture, I looked forward to spending two nights in the refurbished Richardson-Olmsted complex. I will agree that it took a few circles of the building to find the check-in spot, but as we are living in a COVID world, I chocked it up to my not reading fine print somewhere in the process. Once I arrived, I was greeted warmly by Chris, who was friendly, informative, and welcoming. In fact, I would visit Chris several subsequent times that evening and he was always as pleasant. It seemed as if he was running the entire hotel on his own and he was doing an admirable job of it. Was it a little "involved" navigating to the guest wing and finding my room? Sure, but it's a remodeled psych hospital, folks! That's part of the fun. When I emerged into the guest corridor, my jaw dropped. What a perfect rehabilitation of this exceptional building. The corridor is 15 feet wide with tall windows on one side and doors to the rooms on the other. As I found out, these corridors were also used by the hospital patients as day rooms, hence the expansive proportions. When I made the startling realization that I would not be able to visit the Towers Building, the main building of the complex, I must admit I was a bit crestfallen. Chris began to explain the how's and why's of it all (I presume other folks have not been terribly understanding about this), but I understood the COVID issues all too well and also chocked this up to some fine print I acknowledged with a mouse click but had not actually read. I was able to see the main staircase through the window of the south entrance and it is stunning. I snapped a few photos of the exterior on a late night stroll of the grounds (attached). The room itself was immaculate. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom was spotless. I did notice there was no "stopper" in the tub so the mechanism to fill the tub did not work. If I asked the front desk, I'm sure they would have fixed it, but luckily, I enjoy showers as well as baths so I did not worry about it. I would have liked to see a few sets of utensils and dinner napkins in the room, however. In these times of take-out and delivery, they would have come in very handy. I will definitely be staying at the Henry again in future.
Some disappointing points, some great points
Stayed with this hotel for my sister's wedding several weeks ago. Many of our guests waited until after check in time for their rooms to be ready. Somehow, mine & my brother's room was separated from the group block and we were staying on the complete opposite side of the hotel from my family and the bride. Since I was doing a lot of the to do stuff for the wedding, it was inconvenient to have to go to ground floor, cross in front of the hotel outside, then back up the other side. Not to mention not staying near all of our family the whole weekend. Kudos to staff member Chris at the front desk for his valiant service recovery attempt, though there was nothing that could be done. The wedding and reception were beautiful. Would do an event here again if sleeping rooms were not involved.
Classy
Very easy to find and check in was easy and smooth. The staff was very helpful and kind. Went there for a wedding and the staff was very professional. Our room was very large and very comfortable. Felt very at home there.
