I would like to start by mentioning that we got a good price for this hotel. We paid £1800 for 2 people for 1 week. If we had went 2 days later, it would have cost £1700 each! We chose this hotel for the location as we had not stayed in hotel zone before and we knew the standard wasn't going to be what we were used to but not this bad. Last year we stayed at Dreams Playa Mujeres and have previously stayed at luxury bahia principe akumal and Royalton, so I can compare. This hotel is not a 4* as advertised. It is just about a 3*. We got a private transfer to avoid the crowd at check in. Was greeted by Jesus who gave us lot's of information and offered us a twin room or king size. We took the king. He asked if we wanted floor 2 or 13. As I had previously read that unless you are 6ft 10, you would not be able to see over the balcony on floor 13 so we took floor 2. So glad we did as during our stay, waiting for the lift was pointless, they took forever, we used the stairs most times. Also, guests are quite rude, once I was waiting for the lift on my own, when it finally came, a group rushed in. Maybe it's the British in me, we believe in queuing. Thank you to Nivana for using her initiative and helping me with my query. Room: Got to the room and it was clean. Could definitely see the wear but good amount of storage and towels. Optics were available: Vodka, Gin, Rum and Tequila. Good amount of drinks in the fridge, lots of water, beer, coke and lemonade. Safe was easy to set up and use. Walls are paper thin. On the 3rd night, I was woken up by a couple at 2am, singing on the balcony. I politely asked them to keep it down, which they did...until 5am. At that point we had to call security. Then came the moans and groans (if you know what I mean) so I just got up and went to the sports bar for a tea. Realised through the week that our sheets were not being changed. On the second day, there were black marks on our sheets. 2 days later, the same marks were back. Did they just turn them around? Towels were not consistent. 3 towels for 2 people, 1 face cloth for 2 people, sometimes the towels were still wet. A/C worked very well, good hairdryer and the shower had really good pressure, my partner loved it. 2 plug sockets didn't work, one in the bedroom and one in the bathroom. So I would have to straighten my hair in the bedroom which was very far away from the mirror. No light on the balcony and as my partner smokes, he sometimes had to smoke in the dark. If you are an early riser like we are, then be prepared to use your torch on your phone. We had to walk in pitch black to the sports bar every morning to get a cup of tea. Even the staff had to clean the pool area in the dark, probably why it was so bad. Pools and service: The infinity pool was freezing but was the best place for a view. If you sit right at the back, you get the sun all day. Be prepared for people to move their loungers to almost sit on your lap if you got a good spot. There are lots of loungers, enough for everyone but sometimes it may not be where 'they' want to sit! Middle pool was warmer and had all the entertainment, was a really good vibe. Never went into the pool by the buffet but this was still lively. There is also a pool by the corner bar (round the other side of hotel) which was very quiet and secluded. Loungers are not cleaned, only by the rain. There were drink and food stains on them for days. One early morning I once left my lounger to go to get a hot drink from the sports bar. Walked back and a guest had the same towel as me (I always bring one from home). Got to my lounger and guess what...my towel was gone. I caught up with the guy and said that's my towel, he replied 'oh is it? Here you go'. I couldn't believe it! No apology. Pools were cleaned daily and they needed to be. Many guests did not leave the swim up bar pool for hours! People smoked in the pool, I had to pass someone an ashtray once as they were flicking ash in the pool. Limes from tequilas would be floating around. Guests really didn't care for others. The service around the pool was good but sometimes slow. They also have to attend people on the beach if they are short staffed. Roman was great and David at the bar always remembered what I liked to drink. There is no alcohol before 10am, which I found out when I went for breakfast and tried to get a mimosa. Entertainment: The entertainment is great. The team get guests involved and it's a good laugh. Can be quite sexualised sometimes, lots of twerking and encouraging guests to dance provocatively that can be inappropriate for children but this really isn't a children's hotel. There is nothing for them to do apart from a few games, the pool and beach. They put on good shows in the evening and we loved the tribute acts and playing Kahoot. The only night I didn't like was the Burlesque show as this wasn't burlesque, just a group dancing to music. Food: Everything is basically self service which is probably why they have a whole floor full of people with covid. Breakfast was good. Lots of variety if you're picky. I always got an omelette just to be safe as it's cooked in front of you. Dinner was awful. Only the buffet and maybe 1 or 2 other restaurants open each night. If you are not at the restaurants by 7pm, you will be eating at the buffet. If you are successful with a restaurant, be prepared to be given a buzzer and maybe waiting up to 1 hour and a half for a table. I worked out that if I got a buzzer at 6.45, I could go up and get ready and be back down for 8pm and have a drink at the bar before my table was ready. We didn't like the buffet, it all looked like slop. Same food everyday and this was the same for lunch. Restaurants were not much better. Steakhouse: Ribs were full of fat, the corn on the cob was raw but the broccoli was nice. Japanese: Beef Teppanyaki was a piece of overdone steak. The matcha sponge cake was very nice. I would be very cautious with the food in the sport bar. A covid feeding ground! Burgers and other items were in the fridge that you had to put in the microwave yourself. No one used the hand sanitizer. Location: This hotel is in a great location. Short taxi ride to the shopping mall which has Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, Zara and lots of others. Walking distance to the strip. Went to CoCo Bongos for our second time but this time we got Royal service tickets and it was worth it. Walking distance to get the ferry to Isla Mujeres. It was $30 each return or $600 pesos each. We paid for a golf cart on board which was $46 and had use of it until 6pm. The ferry back was at 5pm, we chose to go to the other port which had a return time of 7pm. We got a taxi from there which cost $250 pesos and took less than 5 mins. Overall: The staff try very hard but some of the guests have no class and everyday was like a scene from Benidorm. Some people will like this kind of hotel but it wasn't for us. I tried it, I didn't like it. If you are up for a laugh, want to get drunk and eat awful food, then this is the place for you.
Definitely not a 5*

Not my favorite but you get what you pay for. Pros: ocean side, great water to swim, drinks were good enough, beautiful view, close to the strip, affordable, kid friendly. Cons: the food!!! The food was not great at all. They also claim to have 5 restaurants but they are all the SAME buffet just different seating areas. Also, the "hot tub" is not a hot tub, it's a "jacuzzi" they said because it's freezing cold. Also the pools are colder than the ocean. Base your decision off of your priorities.
A truly honest review.

If you haven't got the time to read my entire review, please just take my word for it. DO NOT STAY HERE. There are far better hotels for even cheaper prices! After having our last 2 holidays cancelled due to covid we were over the moon when we knew this holiday would be going ahead. Whilst we were glad to finally get out of the UK for a break, we were thoroughly disappointed with RIU Cancun. I'll start with the pros: The Lobby- Large, spacious, pretty lobby decorated beautifully for Christmas. However this is where the glamour stops throughout the hotel. The Beach- Gorgeous beach, only 1 day of bad seaweed, no need for beach shoes on the right hand side of the beach as the sand is so soft and golden. Plenty of sunloungers. NYE Celebrations- The hotel really did wow us. It was fantastic. Honestly the best NYE I've had in years. Food in the buffet restaurant was exquisite. Decor throughout the hotel was lovely. We were given goody bags with fancy dress bits and whistles to bring in the new year. I will attach some pics. Plus...my partner proposed!! Sadly that's where the Pros end.. The Cons- Staff- We found a lot of the staff quite rude, miserable and grumpy. We appreciate that Covid has had a huge impact on the entire world and the staff are probably tired BUT we would have hoped to be treated a little better for a "5* hotel" - which it most certainly is not, may I add. Some of the staff were truly lovely but they were let down by the majority of rude staff. Expecting tips. When tipped, never thankful. Ramon on the evening bar was the worst. I felt I had to tip him just to try and get a smile out of him except when I DID tip him, he snatched the money out of my hand, threw it onto a pile of other notes and just carried on with the next customer. Honestly disgusting customer service. Stolen items- We had seen previous reviews about items being stolen from rooms so we made sure to put all valuables in the safe. A couple of days into the holiday I had noticed that a floral bobble that I kept in the bathroom had mysteriously gone missing. Yes it was only a hair bobble but I found it very bizzare for it to have been stolen. Tried not to over think it. A couple of days later my partner was getting ready for the evening, went to iron his pink floral shirt.... this had also mysteriously gone missing. Find this a little more concerning that an item of clothing had been stolen!!! Towards the end of the holiday we came back to the room one afternoon to find the safe unlocked having thought that I had locked it. I assumed perhaps I had forgotten. Didn't think any more of it. But the following day we were going to the beach so I put my engagement ring inside the safe along with other valuables. I made ABSOLUTE CERTAIN the safe was locked just for the safety of my engagement ring alone. When we returned to the room later on, THE SAFE WAS UNLOCKED!!!!!! Thank god nothing was stolen but the sheer stress when I found the safe open was horrifying and I have no idea why any staff member would find this funny!! Or HOW they can even open a locked safe?! Food- Buffet restaurant IS good, lots of choice. But its pretty much the same choice every single day. After a couple of days we didn't want to eat anymore. We went out of the hotel for dinner 3 times which you wouldn't really feel you should have to do when you've paid nearly £5k for all inclusive. A la carte restaurants are a joke. Complete waste of time. Each only open 1 or 2 days a week. You can't reserve a table and it felt as though unless you are Mexican/Spanish you won't be getting a table. The man in charge of the Italian restaurant was especially rude. Cleanliness- Looking back now, our room was disgusting. I wish I had taken photos. On the first day of being in our room walking barefoot my feet were BLACK with dirt. The toilet seat was all marked and yellowing. The mirroring around the shower had stains all over it that would not come off. No bin liners provided for bins. Optic cabinet wood all chipped, worn, old. The shower hose ripped, dirty and gave off a burning rubber smell when in use which was probably a little dangerous. And talking of dangerous, the plugs would spark when plugging things in. The bathroom light switch also sparked and the wall was cracking around it. The metal of the iron was broken and put several pulls in our clothes. Entertainment- Apart from NYE, the entertainment was diabolical. The hotel nightclub was closed due to covid. So the evening entertainment for adults consisted of a 1 hour show from 930pm-1030pm. That was it. End of. The same music every single night would then continue to play until midnight as that's when the evening bar was open until. Guests were left with 3 choices. Sit there and drink yourself into a coma from sheer boredom. Go out of the resort and visit nearby bars (again shouldn't have to do this on a £5k holiday!) Or go to bed. Seriously DISAPPOINTING. Engagement- Personally for me this is what gets me down the most. Obviously at the time I did not know this but my partner was planning to propose on NYE. He went to the front desk to ask if there was anything that the hotel could do to make this occasion more special/do they recommend anything etc. All the lady on the desk could offer was "a table outside at the buffet restaurant" which is laughable because you can get a table outside of the buffet ANY night of the week!!! So, RIU Cancun, whilst the proposal was everything I could have wished for and whilst I was the happiest woman alive, it could have been made EVEN MORE special had you bothered to make an effort for your guests. Honestly, I wouldn't stay at this hotel again even if somebody paid me to. We plan to marry in Mexico and we will be returning to Grand Palladium. A genuine 5* hotel. So we can only thank you RIU Cancun, because we now know when we do return to get married, it will be a dream come true in comparison to a holiday with you.
I don't recommend

I stayed here for a wedding with a group of 40 people. From the moment we arrived we had problems. Firstly, they had given us their word that we would be put on the same floor for the stay. On arrival, they said it was not possible. They tried to put most of us on the 3rd floor saying there are no higher floors available. After 30 minutes of fighting, someone gave them a tip and magically we were put on the 8th and 9th floor. The rooms looked nothing like the pictures, they were not well cleaned, the walls were paper thin and the sheets made everyone cough at night for some unknown reason (not covid). My room did not have blankets but I know other rooms did. I also had 3 rings stolen from my room. The showers were not clean, the water pressure was not good and the temperature changed every minute. It would go from cold to extra hot by itself. Also, the hallways were creepy and the elevators had a maximum capacity of 4 ... we literally had to wait at least 5 minutes each time. Pool/beach There's barely any sun because the building hides it. Usually by 2pm we'd all be in the shade. However, there was good entertainment. There's only 1 bar for the pools and beach, which was not ideal. But the bartenders were nice and worked hard. Food The food was okay at the buffet but horrible at the restaurants. The restaurants were ridiculous. They did not take reservations in advance, they were open 1/2 nights and it was not worth the 2h wait. Overall, it's a small resort and not worth the 1730$ we payed. We could have gotten a way better resort for the same price.
