Its an old hotel, pleasant staff, with a nice garden and pool, good breakfast, but roofs of rooms are all covered by asbestos, very bad for human's health and forbidden by law. Will never go back and will complain about it.

Wonderful place to stay

Beautiful spacious room with massive terrace. Staff were helpful and attentive. Massive selection for breakfast. Very good dinner nice wine selection. Live music one night. The gardens were lush magnificent and extensive. Excursion options for Levada walks were very easy to make. Really an exceptional place to stay and relatively easy to get to Funchal by bus if you don’t have a car

Not as expected

This was our first visit to Maderia and was a bit disappointed with our stay at the hotel Quita splendida Spa. Upon arrival there was no welcome to the hotel and we were shown to our room which was damp and musky smell, we dicided not to take the room and requested an alternative or an upgrade which we upgraded. Generally the hotel appeared very tired and required updating in many areas especially rooms. We found the beds to be hard and no air conditioning in the room which must be a problem in high summer. The service and food was very good with no complaints but you really do need a car to visit sites as the hotel is situated in the hills. Would I go go back? Probably not.

After numerous false starts, my wife and myself are nearing the end of a most enjoyable 15 night stay at the Quinta Splendida Wellness & Botanical Garden in the old part of Canico Village conveniently located equidistant between the Airport and Funchal. A sprawling property in 3 Hectares of what I personally consider to be one of the Island’s finest Botanical Gardens. As such, it is the preferred venue for many local functions - we have witnessed several Weddings and a Christening during our stay. Rooms vary in size but our Spa Suite (which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and enjoys beautiful sunrises) is one of the biggest (80+ sq metres excluding the terrace!) and well worth considering. Room Service is also most accommodating and the only downsides were the absence of an a/c system and no British TV channels! Our stay was on a half-board basis with buffet style Breakfasts and Dinners served at the Restaurant Galeria. Both were more than adequate for our tastes with excellent quality food and attentive service - Daniela & Rosa being our personal favourites but the whole F & B team deserves a big pat on the back for what is all too often a difficult and thankless task! Our biggest thanks, however, go to the Front of House team (Fatima, Marcio, Mariela & Rosario) who did such an exceptional job in collectively handling our various aborted bookings during the height of the COVID Pandemic. Indeed, it was this positive approach which made us even more determined to visit Quinta Splendida - something I’m extremely pleased we eventually managed to do! Another big plus is the property’s location in the Old Village as this not only has a good number of eateries and shops (including a Post Office) but some interesting attractions (18th Century Church, Museum and a beautifully maintained Cemetery). It is also well served by the 155 Bus Service (Stop a few yards away from the property) which takes 30 minutes to Funchal and represents excellent value for money at Euros2.20! All in all, the property has much going for it and is certainly one I would gladly recommend to others!

Stunning location and gardens

Arrived on the early flight 9th August, shown to our apartment an hour later. Sadly it wasn't what we booked (we booked 1 bed apt with separate bedroom - but got a duplex with no separate bedroom....no soundproofing); we were anticipating a problem, yet the receptionist solved the problem in 5 minutes. Full credit to her for this. The apt was amazing - very spacious, full oven/cooking facilities - we didn't use except the kettle - kitchen lounge & TV, huge separate bedroom, and a view to die for. Daily cleaning service and beds made. No air con, which I thought might be a problem, but most evenings cooled down and I slept like a baby with the sliding doors open, except for 3 nights when it had been in the 30s during the day - so I dragged the bed next to the open sliders and managed to get cooler that way. The botanical gardens are just beautiful, and worked on 5 days a week by full time gardeners. Excellent pool area - the pool is larger than it looks in the photos - a good 20m to the stepping stones and a small area for younger children to play. Never got over full, plenty of room, Plenty of sunbeds and fair supply of brollies for shade, except when the wind got up. Breakfasts were excellent - great variety of food from fruit, to cold meats & cheese to bacon, eggs etc. Something for everyone. Ate out most evenings - except twice - the buffet is OK, the Thai is overpriced & average. (Still not going to take a star off for that). Plenty of grocery shopping 50m from the hotel plus a shopping centre 10 mins walk up the hill. Handful if places for eating out in Canico - Central was a great place, but mostly we had to venture to Canico de Baixo for restaurant meals - STEEP does not fully describe the precipitous path up & down, so we took taxis after our one walk down and up. I'm not a mountain goat....as for returning, if it was for the resort alone, definitely yes, but not for the very steep location - we prefer to walk out of an evening, have a nice saunter to our restaurant, also few bars that we could see for sitting and people watching. Still giving five stars for the beautiful resort not the vicinity.
