Good hotel, shame about cleanliness
Reviewed 5 december, 2021
Upon check-in, the receptionist highlighted that they check names off when entering the building after 11:00 at night and that I would need to buzz to enter. I stay in many hotels, and this has never been something which has been pointed out before. This also didn't turn out to be true, as I used my door card to open the main door after 23:00 on two nights and walked straight to my room without hassle. There was a security person in the reception area on Friday night, but not on the other weekday nights. Maybe they do check, but on an ad-hoc basis - but still very odd to mention this on check-in! I booked a superior double room but was given a superior accessible room on floor 0 (lower floor). Upon entry, a person outside the window was doing handy work, which meant that I had to close the curtains for privacy. The mattress in the room was disgusting (red and dark brown stains), and the air con unit kept on making very loud noises, even though it was turned off. The room was also opposite the cleaning cupboard, and cleaner conversations could be heard easily at around 17:00 in the afternoon. I called reception and spoke to Glyn, who promptly resolved my request to move rooms. He even came down to show me the new room, to make sure I was happy, and added a complimentary extra to my stay too. The new room was a lot smaller but had a newer air-con unit and a newer (smart TV), larger TV. The bathroom was a lot nicer too, as it wasn't a wet room. The bed was clean, but the general cleanliness of the high window sills (marks), walls and fittings (dusty) was poor. Sound insulation was generally good, but it was a shame that the blackout blinds didn't stretch to cover all of the windows. Walking from my room to breakfast, I would pass the cleaners waiting for the lifts each day. They didn't show much acknowledgement, and it felt like I was inconveniencing them by walking past. Breakfast was basic but adequate. I didn't rate the mini hash browns; they were rather stale and took me back to something you'd get in a school dinner. The lady who looked after breakfast was fab. She was on top of making sure everything was well stocked and was quick to take away finished plates etc. There were loads of seating during the week (around 9am). Breakfast on Saturday morning was noticeably busier. In summary, the location of this hotel is amazing. You are right next to the central station and have the city centre on your doorstep. If they can nail the cleanliness, this is actually a very good hotel based on the price I paid, and I would move my rating from 3 (average) to 4/5 stars. I would stay here again if the price is right.

I stayed here with my sister in a double room on a Saturday night. I've never stayed in such a quiet hotel, especially considering it's opposite a Wetherspoons (which our room overlooked). Our room was compact but perfect and lovely & clean. The staff at check in were lovely and friendly and different staff were also really nice when we checked out. They kept our luggage for us after we'd checked out, they charge £1 per bag which goes to charity. The location is fab, right next to the train station. I'm looking forward to stopping here again, soon.

Stayed for a few nights whilst visiting family. Was very obvious that the room had been cleaned properly which was important to me given the pandemic, I had spoken with the manager Glyn on arrival to make sure it had been cleaned. Was a nice change to have spoken with a manager that took time out of his day to make sure I was comfortable. I will most certainly be back!
Great Place to Stay

We had a lovely stay here this week, everything was clean and tidy which is more important than ever these days. Nothing seemed to much trouble for staff we spoke to and were helpful and knowledgeable. Breakfast was good quality for the price. I was happy all round and so was the better half (which is always a bonus)
