Echoing a lot of reviews… massive drop in standards!
Reviewed 17 january, 2023
Unfortunately I never thought I would leave a negative review in regards to Farnham. Having stayed here 3-4 times previously it was a total shock to see the drop in standards after covid. The pool was as mentioned by others absolutely freezing! I read a response here from the hotel saying it was at the optimum temperature? Well if optimum means penguins would feel right at home then they are spot on! The paint was peeling off the walls, dirt in the corners of the spa and the sauna was out of action which I feel should be mentioned upon booking. The room itself wasn’t ready when we arrived which is perfectly ok and we received complimentary drinks and waited. It was ready shortly after that but unfortunately was a bit of a disappointment. The carpet was ripped beside the bed and there was hair in the sink of the room which was just cleaned. Also the table on which the tv stood was all chipped, never a good look. Ontop of that our view was of a roof with vents, not exactly idyllic but could overlook it if the room was up to standard. It wasn’t. We travelled for my 30th birthday. Can’t fault the food at either breakfast or dinner but as we were leaving the lady running the dinner wished me a happy birthday and asked me did I enjoy my birthday plate? I looked at my husband as I didn’t know what she meant until he informed me afterwards he had arranged for dessert to be brought out on a plate wishing me a happy birthday as it was a special occasion. I received no such thing which was disappointing for my husbands efforts. Overall I have to say we felt very let down. It simply wasn’t up to the standard of previous times and I feel some of it is due to cutbacks. We actually found ourselves saying let’s go somewhere else next time as we didn’t enjoy it due to the too cold pool and run down feel of it. I do have to say I cannot fault the staff though, every single person we met was lovely and polite from the driver to the housekeeping staff. They’re all 10/10 but the owners are really letting people down by cutting corners.

Cold Pool & Attention to Detail Lacking

Positives: Hotel driveway and lobby entrance is lovely. Courtesy bus to drive guests from car park is really good. Bedrooms really nice (despite the renovations which didn't bother us) Breakfast is superb - it's a little chaotic but food quality and choice is excellent Negatives: Pool is freezing cold - it's a tough experience going into the water at the spa - one of those where you say through chattering teeth "it's not too bad once you're in".... It's entirely uncomfortable and not pleasant. Service - 1st night dining I got a really bad Irish Coffee with cream sinking rapidly into the coffee. It was replaced. Also we skipped starters on the first night and ordered mains - they arrived super quick which made me worry. Service - 2nd night we were served by a young boy who was clearly inexperienced. He had no idea they even sold cider in the hotel! Further training is required. The room we had dinner in on the 2nd night was like a spill-over room lacking in any atmosphere whatsoever. We'd have preferred to dine in the main restaurant. One of our drinks glasses was dirty - not just a water mark but actual dirt on the glass. We alerted 2 waiters of the issue and were basically ignored until the manager arrived. To be fair she acted promptly and got a new glass and drink. She was also very generous with our final bill - which was very much appreciated. Overall: We left kind of frustrated - we feel the hotel has the potential to be so much better with greater attention to detail. The main gripe is the pool - if you can't heat the pool correctly people won't come for a spa break. Service can be rectified pretty quickly with better training and our issues were minor but still impacted our stay. Unfortunately we won't be returning to the hotel primarily because of the water temperature......

On arrival and throughout the stay, the staff were splendid. They were more than happy to chat with us and make our requests. It made for a very pleasant stay. The food was just superb and was the highlight of our stay. A delicious fine dining experience. It left us wanting more!

Having stayed previously we looked forward to visiting the hotel again in October 22, and we’re not disappointed! As always, the staff were fabulous and very focussed on great customer service, the rooms lovely, peaceful and relaxing, although the weather wasn’t in our favour the walks around the lake were gorgeous too! As a result we have decided the best place for a Valentines break of course would be here… so once again looking forward to seeing everyone! If you want great facilities, excellent food, first class customer service, look no further than Farnham Estates Spa hotel, you won’t be disappointed 👌

Horrendous dining experience, but otherwise brilliant hotel

Rooms are terrific, beautiful large windows, spacious bathrooms and large comfortable beds.. nice area to go for a walk too.. outdoor pool and leisure facilities are a must.. but, I had 2 of the worst dining experiences in my life here.. 1st night we booked into the main restaurant, starters came out, no issue, then we were waiting over 1 hour for our mains! And we were not the only table.. when the mains did come out but it wasn't what we ordered, but we were starving so we tucked in, halfway through eating I noticed a huge lump of blue plastic under my food, so we asked to see the manager, I really felt for this man as I seems this was a regular situation, and we were definitely not the 1st table to speak to him that night.. he offered us a free meal the following night but we said no and ate out at the bar, again, awful experience.. our waitress was a young lady who seemed to have a lack of decorum, again a long wait for mains, but nothing like the night before.. anyway before both my starter and mains they brought out my dessert ??? And when I had finally eaten my starter and mains my dessert was stone cold, but I just ate it to get out of there. I would definitely recommend the hotel but would advise heading into Cavan town for something to eat
