Finest boutique hotel in Northern Michigan, if not the entire state!
Opinión escrita el 16 de Septiembre de 2021
To celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary, my wife and I retraced our Northern Michigan Honeymoon and found the Hotel Earl in Charlevoix. What an exquisite place in such a beautiful setting! To help us celebrate our anniversary, the Manager upgraded our king size room to their largest suite - The Earl Suite. Wow, we felt like we hit the lottery., especially after a lesser experience we had the day before in Traverse City (see my review of the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa). Words can't express how grateful we are for the attention we received from the Hotel Earl on our special day.
A solid 3.5 stars with improvements needed to charge top dollar

- Location - it is a very short walk to all the shops and restaurants of Charlevoix and an easy drive to Petoskey
- They have both a pool and hot tub which seemed like a hard convo to find
- Parking is easy and close to all the rooms. If you go during a busy weekend, the number of spots could be a concern but we had no issues
- Bedding and mattresses were very comfortable and clean. We slept well.
- The bathroom shower floor was turning pink from mold and it was well overdue for a good scrub
- The room could use a paint touch up. Walls and trim are nicked and it stands out because so much is black paint. It made the room feel like a lip stick job
- The hot tub water was murky and could use a water change
- M&M’s and other candy were smashed on the carpet when we arrived. Clearly whoever vacuumed last didn’t look very hard
- The walls are very thin and we were woken up at 1am to our neighbors enjoying each other’s company (too much)
I didn’t feel that for +$300/ night, the hotel room was in top shape and I certainly found the bathroom tile situation and hot tub water to be surprising. I would stay here again if I had to but it was definitely a $175/night hotel in my mind.
Great local gem

This local gem was completely rebuilt and modernized to the awesome hotel it now is. Very focused on detail very friendly staff super clean. Less than 100 yards walk to the city center draw bridge.
Walking to restaurants, city beach and shops.
Clean, Modern, Good Location

We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Earl. The property was very clean. Much thought went into the design; they were able to provide many services in a small footprint. While small, the pool was great especially with the roll up doors to the outside, towels, hot tub, and other amenities. It's an easy walk to town for coffee in the morning or an afternoon stroll through the shops, and nice to get a drink in the lobby bar on the way back. Things we would change: It is misleading to call it a "one bedroom suite" because there is no door to the bedroom. It's basically a large room, and we prefer the privacy of a 1BR for dressing, noise if someone is sleeping in, etc. so that was disappointing. There is no desk or table in the room, which would have been nice for writing, eating, working at the computer. A small side table on the balcony would also be a nice addition if you're sitting out with a coffee or cocktail. And the pillows were terrible, but that seems the same at all hotels. Despite all that, we would stay again. We really enjoyed the pool and hot tub a lot! It made a great home base for exploring Charlevoix, Petoskey, Harbor Springs and the whole area. Only one hour to Traverse City or the Mackinac Bridge, making it a perfect location.
A Hidden Gem: Luxury Hotel in Northern MI!
Opinión escrita el 15 de Agosto de 2021
My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Earl in early May of 2021 in a one-bedroom suite balcony room. It’s safe to say it was the best hotel we’ve visited! We love the feeling of luxury, which can be hard to find Up North, but Hotel Early definitely delivers that high-end feel at a reasonable price just steps away from a beautiful Lake Michigan beach and cute beach town.
The hotel’s exterior and interior is a perfect mix of modern features and wood touches. We were shocked by how spacious our room was! It was extremely clean, decorated tastefully, had many different lighting features, and was on a corner so our bed felt surrounded by the windows and scenery! We loved the robes that came with the room too.
The pool and hot tub area feels like a spa resort, not just a hotel pool. It has clear garage doors that allow the pool area to be opened to the outdoor patio and hot tub area. We were only able to stay one night, but if we had stayed longer, we would have definitely taken time to enjoy the upscale bars on site as well for a drink and snack. We didn’t get to interact with the staff much because of our short stay and Covid, but they were very helpful at check-in, making our pool/hot-tub reservation, and were eager to serve us a drink if we wanted! The hotel was designed with areas like the cozy fireplace lobby and rooftop bar, to actually sit and enjoy the ambiance of both the hotel and scenery. Because of Covid protocols, the hotel did not have their continental breakfast open, but had a large selection of grab and go items for us including fresh pastries, fresh fruit, yogurt, juices, and coffee.
A huge plus of the hotel is it’s location! It’s on the main road of downtown Charlevoix, so you can walk anywhere. The hotel has ample free parking and free overflow street parking. It was so convenient to be able to park there and go explore the town. We spent our day skipping rocks on the beach, shopping, picking out taffy, eating ice cream from the cute little Dairy Bar, and enjoying crepes from That French Place. Even going before tourism season began, there was plenty to do and we felt like we had the downtown strip to ourselves!
We hope to return to Hotel Earl very soon. Because of how much the hotel itself offers, we think this is a great getaway for any season, not just summer. You could stay inside the hotel all weekend and still have so much fun. Well done Hotel Earl!!
