Lovely stay lovely city

Booked to visit the cathedral and other sites. Wanted to go to the zoo but was rained off! Hotel lovely. Great staff. Young man I. The desk was so helpful when we arrived, really can’t fault him. He’s a credit and couldn’t be more helpful. Nice room very clean and lovely breakfast!

Perfect break.

Super stay. Lovely room which was clean and had all the bits we needed. I was a bit worried about other comments, but have to say had no faults. Good pool, breakfast and the staff were really good to us. We have a few mobility issues and they could not be more helpful. Yes, some work is needed in the hotel, but it looked like improvements were being made as we saw some building work happening. Thanks for having us.

Not impressed

Reviewed 25 january, 2023

Spent 2 nights for spa weekend with friends . Hotel is very run down leaky roof. Damp patches on walls in one of the bedrooms . Rooms were very cold and had to request portable heaters . The spa area was awful and not somewhere to sit and relax due to the horrible smell. Steam room out of order. Cold sauna and freezing temperature in the gym. The entry into the jacuzzi had a dangerous step and rocky handles . FOOD - very basic and breakfast was limited choice and had to wait for items to be cooked We are supposed to get what we pay for in life but I certainly would not pay to stay here again ( in fact would not stay even if free! ) . Manager was not interested in our complaints and was very patronising. . Totally agree with others needs a good refurbishment and training for staff. Curtains dusty and dirty . Cobwebs seem to live in this building . Treatment I wanted was not available due to them not having the correct oils which was disappointing. I ended up with a basic back massage which should have been 25 minutes. I was quite happy she cut it short at 15 minutes as the bed was uncomfortable and the unpleasant smell on the towel so I was happy to come out of that room.

Terrible Christmas Day Lunch 2022

Reviewed 17 january, 2023

Third year of going for Christmas Day lunch. 2020 and 2021 was set up in the garden room, really lovely. December 2022 in York suite. Room was freezing, too few people in a huge function suite. We were put right around the corner at the back in front of a store room door that wouldn’t shut, such a draught on my 80 year old mum. The tables were tressel tables, long with a chair either side, it was sitting either side of a decorators pasting table. Basics on table, knife, fork, spoon and water glass. Told to go get our own drinks from the bar….which was a fair walk away. When we queried this the waiter (I use the term loosely) said he was the pool man and anyway he was only helping out. Asked for water, jug came with smashed glass top, super dangerous, I took pics. Food appeared to be rationed, the seasonal veg was 3 wedges of carrot and 2 roasters. Just about warm I assume when it left the kitchen but by the time the pool man had walked all the way around the hotel corridors and around the function room to us at the back the food was stone cold, same with the Christmas pudding. We asked the pool man for our coffee and mince pies to be told “it’s help yourself in the lounge”. On arriving in the lounge there was no tea, no coffee, no cups, saucers, spoons or milk. No mince pies….just some badly cut up Christmas cake and shortbread fingers on 2 pieces of slate, no covering over them, lots of people picking pieces up then putting them down, not to mention talking, sniffing and coughing over them. After asking for coffee the barman come waiter come reception guy brought some in one jug which was emptied in a matter of a couple of minutes. The tables were not cleared, full of used cups and saucers oh and it may be a dog friendly hotel but a lady had a huge dog on the sofa with her, which is fine if you’re at home but in a hotel ? Enough was enough we left, the manager said “did you enjoy your meal?”…. No afraid not. We told him we had been in the garden room for the last 2 years to which he insisted we hadn’t…..we told him to check his bookings. All in all a terrible Christmas Day lunch, scandalous at £80 each. I emailed Amit Ummat at Brook Hotels and sent him the photos of our lousy Christmas Day….. not heard a thing back. We will not be returning.

New Year event

Reviewed 8 january, 2023

I feel I need to stick up for this hotel a little after reading the reviews. We've just had one of the best New Year s eve's. Yes, the hotel is tired and in need of a revamp, but try and look beyond this. We arrived for the Black Tie New Year event. We were first to arrive and couldn't check in but were told to make ourselves comfortable in the lounge. It was clean and inviting. My first criticism was that there was no music playing, which was soon sorted. The bar opened and quickly ran out of Peroni. It's not the best for early on New Year, but other beer was available. People started to arrive and it was a nice atmosphere. At 3 pm we could go to our room. It was tired but was clean and the bed was very comfortable. A bottle of Prosecco left but no glasses. We went to the bar where the fizz and canapés area was being set up, hence no flutes. The bar man provided us with wine glasses. A small cream tea was available, and then, as mentioned, a reception before we made our way to the event hall. It was set up in tables of 8 and was festive and smart. There was a great mix of guests, and the evening flowed wonderfully. The staff did not stop, and my hat goes off to them all. The food came out per table and was served very quickly. It was delicious. My only complaint was that my lamb shank really needed some veg, other than potatoes, but none were available. It didn't spoil my meal but would have added to it. The music continued, and at midnight, it was great to sing Auld Lang Syne for the first time in 3 years. A little suggestion for next year is to play a few more party tunes and maybe a little later. Everyone was still in full swing when everything came to an end at 12.30. A comfortable night's sleep, then a tasty breakfast before heading for a New Years walk in Chester. Please pass our thanks to your staff that evening, especially the lovely Irish gentleman who was even back, keeping things in check, at breakfast time. We didn't use the pool but heard other guests saying it was lovely. Thanks for making our start to 2023 a good one!
