Caring staff, wonderful room
We booked a den room last minute to stay after I got a medical scan at the hospital. I recently received a difficult medical diagnosis and was bummed that the room wasn’t what I was expecting. However, I called down to the front desk and they upgraded me to a cass room and sent up a small plate of fruit, which was such a kind thing to do as we were having an awful week. Thank you to the staff for being thoughtful. The room was beautiful and full of light. We ordered room service for dinner as well. There’s no coffee in the room but they will send a nespresso machine if you ask for it. In the mornings, they sent up a hot pot of water for tea. It was a nice relaxing stay which was a nice respite from all the doctors appointments I’ve had to attend that week. The location is great as well — lots of places to walk to, breakfast spots, shops, etc. Once I’m done with treatment, we’re planning on another staycation to the Shinola.
Best staycation!
We celebrated my birthday this past weekend with a staycation at the Shinola Hotel. The staff went above and beyond to make everything special. The rooms are beautiful and have so much charm. I strongly encourage you to make a reservation at San Morello while you’re here! You won’t regret it. Can’t wait to go back.
So incredibly disappointed!
I had SUCH high hopes for this hotel and was SO looking forward to my stay and in the past48 hrs, I've been nothing but continually disappointed! The level of noise in this hotel is sub-par and just unacceptable considering what you pay per night. I was placed exactly overlooking the former Hudson's Dept store and I do not blame the hotel, whatsoever, for the loud construction noise beginning promptly each morning at 8:00. However, due to the hardwood floorin throughout, albeit lovely, makes for continual sleep disruption when you can hear your neighbors coming in and out with their luggage at all hours of the night. Each time you call downstairs, you get a different person answering at the front desk and it's a crap shoot as to their attitude and customer service - some very accomodating and others' seem annoyed that you're bothering to call them. The last most upsetting part is haivng a friend come to visit me, who just happened to be of arabic decent and when he tried to go back to the elevators where I was to meet him, he was immediately followed and stopped and sharply told "You need room keys to go back there!" I don't know what kind of logic this is that you're not permitted near an elevator without a room key, but is screams of prejudice and profiling to me. The decor and rooms are very cool and very well designed, it's just too bad the level of customer service and interest in a client's quiet stay is just so sloppy and disregarded.
I wanted to LOVE it so badly, swing and miss...
We've been scoping out The Shinola Hotel for awhile now and finally committed to a stay. This hotel is beautiful! Valet/Doormen/Bellmen...all that! The ambiance is exactly what you want. However, it misses on some CRITICAL details that just make it not worth it with so many other options available. The Cass room has a very dramatic entrance and is amazing upon entry. As you get acquainted, you see things are not where they should be. Two large TV's, neither of which you can watch without turning your body 90 degrees from where you're sitting. It's rather uncomfortable. Same thing in the bed. My wife and I love watching TV in bed and you had to crank your head around to see the TV. Very odd. If you're someone that TV doesn't matter then you would LOVE this room. Another thing I found interesting was the mattress. It was like 5" thick, we both woke up with stiff backs that continued for days. Lastly was the coffee. Seems silly right? But there is none! You seriously have to get dressed, leave the hotel, walk down the ally and pay $6 for a small coffee. There is no coffee inside the hotel. One of the most crazy things I've ever had to do while staying at a $400 a night hotel. And honestly, a deal-breaker. Who want's to do this? No one. Shinola! Please, please get a $30 coffee maker for your rooms so that your guests can wake up, brew a cup, crank their heads and watch some TV. This is honestly one of the more beautiful hotels I've ever stayed at. But they missed on some small, yet very important details.
So,so
The hotel valet is one of the first things to notice. There are guys waiting to park the car and hold the door while your luggage is brought up by the bellman. Front desk service was superb. Security room key, elevator is impressive. The room is clean and well decorated with excellent views of the city and a comfy king bed. The shower and toilet are separate rooms. The bar is well stocked but that is an addon. There are many restaurants to choose from within a short walking distance and they're all very good. The bellman is so so. Bit of an attitude. The hotel is quiet, relatively speaking even from the fifth floor. Here's where things get tricky. There's really not much difference between the Cass, the Den and the Study King. We were in room 515 and to be honest, the description for Cass fell short of our expectations. There's a big tv and wifi and chrome cast and apple TV. I can go to Country inn and suites and get that. The king bed is a plus but the room overall lacks amenities for the business traveler. The Cass King measures 20x12 plus the bathroom and vestibule. Theres no desk, the vanity is very small, and no tables to sit and eat at. There is no microwave or refrigerator except for the bar fridge which everything is ala cart and is expensive. Theres no coffee service, no morning paper. You're paying for the location and for that you will pay steeply to the tune of 342 dollars a night plus the valet service of 32 dollars. It's hard for me to justify ever staying here again as I'm just not that wowed by the accommodations. Book caddy has attached garage and is under a reputable management company as are several local hotels nearby.
