New Year at Greywalls

Reviewed 3 january, 2022

We booked a 3 night New Year break at Greywalls in 2020 and were delighted to be able to go in 2021 after New Year 2020 was cancelled by the government. The hotel was extremely helpful before our stay keeping in touch by e-mail and by personal phone call. The management kept us informed of the changes in Scottish government legislation and the effect on our stay. Arriving late and frazzled after being caught up in a road closure of the A1M we were welcomed and soothed by the quiet professionalism of the staff. Our room (Kings Loo) was warm and welcoming. We were seated by the fire in the delightful library, served a drink and canapés and allowed to order our dinner at leisure. Throughout our stay, as exampled above, the calm, professional, personal service never faltered. New Years Eve dinner was magnificent and the fireworks at midnight superb. Throughout our stay the food was faultless. The chef and his kitchen team should be commended on their use of local produce and their imaginative menus. Breakfasts, afternoon tea, dinners were all delicious. We were aware that the hotel was being run by a small team of very professional managers who put their hands to every task from serving drinks, serving food, topping up the open fires whilst still being unhurried and welcoming in their demeanour. We left refreshed and revived from our stay. Thank you to the whole team at Greywalls.

Delightful and friendly small boutique hotel

Stayed for three nights in one of the single rooms which are small but offer a stunning view over Muirfield Golf Course. Breakfast was OK..Nice kipper although two would have been better than one.. Croissants were delicious. Small dinner menu but everything we had was delicious.. Tea in the lunch next to a roaring fire and drinks after dinner listening to a stunning piano player.. All I all a fun visit with friendly and helpful staff always willing to be of service..

Disappointing and expensive

As soon as I ate one of canapés I knew we were in for a poor quality meal. The scallop starter had one scallop! The pheasant breast was totally undercooked … at £100 per head including two bottles of wine, this represents poor value for money The surroundings promise so much … such a pity the food does not match!

Outstanding again!

Everything here was outstanding on our latest visit. The ambiance of the building is a treat and pre-dinner drinks in the library gives the evening atmosphere. The canapés are incredible:original, tasty. The menu just now is limited but hopefully they will go back to the a la carte in due course. Our choices were as always beautifully presented and delicious. Then coffee back in the library with treats was a great ending to an evening of excellent service (from Emelion and his colleagues) and terrific food. We’ll be back.
