Charming village hotel

Reviewed 27 october, 2021

We have just spent 3 nights here in a very relaxed and comfortable hotel. The food was excellent and varied menu. Staff here were so welcoming and friendly they were a pleasure. The room was very comfortable with good en suite and complimentary toiletries. Would definitely recommend.

Lovely food

We stayed for a couple of night, with our dogs, to attend a dog show and meet up with relatives. Nine of us ate together on the first night and the food was great, very big portions, some of us had no room for pudding. Everyone enjoyed what they had chosen. As it is an old building it was a bit like a rabbit warren trying to find our room, which was a bit on the tight side when we had to fit in two cages for the dogs. Maybe, being an old building, they are all that small. Everything was clean and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast on the second morning was excellent but we had a packed lunch to take away on the first morning as we had to be away early. It was very good but, even though we had asked for it to be left in the fridge ( which we were shown) until we got up in the morning, we found it outside our room when we got up and the yoghurt was warm. It made me a bit wary about eating the ham in the sandwiches. That was really our only quibble. The staff were very friendly.

What a find!!

What a charming place in a lovely village. We're having 2 nights b&b for only £90 per night - EXCELLENT VALUE! Had dinner in the hotel with friends who live locally. Just a "pub grub" menu - but soooo much better than pub grub food - fresh veg! We had 4 starters, 4 mains, 3 desserts, bottle of red, 3 glasses of white and 3 soft drinks - excellent value at £130.00 in total. The staff are very, very, polite and helpful. The rooms are very pretty (arts & crafts and William Morris etc). Comfy beds and pillows. Nice selection of toiletries in the bathroom. Loads of storage space and nice selection of beverages and biccies. We WILL be back THANK YOU

A really comfortable country hotel.

Reviewed 20 june, 2021

This is a comfortable country hotel in a really quiet village. It is unpretentious, being slightly “rubbed around the edges”, which adds to it feeling very relaxed - a bit like a very comfortable shoe. The food is not “fine dining” but is well cooked and tasty. And the portions are more than adequate. We had dinner here both nights that we were here and were well satisfied both times - the battered haddock was as fresh as I’ve ever had and the steak and ale pie was excellent. You select your breakfast choices and approximate time on the evening before, although I suspect that asking for something different in the morning would not be a great problem. There was a good choice of breakfast from the continental to the full Scottish. But why no tatty scones? Again tasty and filling. The staff were all very friendly and nice. Nothing seemed to be a problem. Really nice people. They take the threat from Covid seriously with all the precautions in place - hand sanitiser, masks and (where possible) a one way system. This made us feel secure. Gifford itself is a small village and very quiet. It is well placed as a base for exploration of the surrounding areas, North Berwick, Dunbar, Haddington, etc. You will need a car, however as it is a village and 4 or 5 miles from the nearest town, Haddington. As far as I am aware, there are some good walks around the area but we didn’t have the opportunity to sample these. We hope to return to this area and this will be our hotel of choice.

Perfect for a relaxing break

This is period country hotel that combines its historic charms with modern comfort. It is set in a pretty village looking over the village green, with easy parking adjacent to the hotel. The village also has community sponsored woodland walks adding to the tranquility of the experience. The staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful, the bedroom well appointed and comfortable- combined with real ale, pleasing evening menu and an outstanding breakfast makes it perfect for a relaxing break.
