Golfing trip to Macdonald Portal

We stayed at this hotel mid-October. I would say that many of the other recent reviews here are accurate. We were part of a golfing group, and the hotel had a few other large groups whilst we were there.
Overall we had a good time. That said, the hotel and golf clubhouse at Portal Premier were very tired and in need of modernisation. Appreciate it is difficult just coming out of lockdown, but currently I would say the hotel is not up to 4 star standards.
On the positive side, the hotel was clean, the staff were very helpful and the food in the restaurant was cooked nicely. The areas that let the place down was really the decour, where the carpets and in the restaurant were ripped and held together with gaffer tape, the chairs were grubby around the top of the uprights and the tea and coffee at breakfast were only served via flask, which on occasions took a long time to be served. The swimming pool and spa aerea, there were clean until you looked up at the ceiling and saw the peeling paint.
Both golf courses were in an ok condition. The greens ran true and the fairways were not too muddy given the time of year. Bunkers were mixed, although not many of the fairway bunkers had rakes in them, and had lots of footprints. The tee boxes were a bit tatty, with signs of wear and tear.
Overall we had a great time, but would rate the facilities as average value.

Spa treatments were really good spa was very clean. We had afternoon tea the found was fantastic and jayne the lady in charge was brilliant. Dinner was good. The breakfast next morning was OK but food ran out quickly jayne was on shift she is a lovely lady, helpful and always smiling, some of the other staff were clueless to what they were doing. We will be coming back.
Could do better , loads of boisterous golfers - Not 4 star

Staff & treatments in Spa very good. Rooms decent and food ok. A few niggles with food orders missed or not turning up. Waiting time at bar up to 30 mins due to huge drinks rounds for large all male golf groups.
Special mention for staff member Ash who was a Trojan and doing the the role of 4 people. This hotel needs more guys like Ash and a visible leadership team.
Needed a spa after experience

40th bday gift for my partner and my first Spa experience.. what a disaster !! Turned up at spa took 1/2 to find our names on the system.. then we had to explain to them what our treatments were and ask how the day works etc as wasn’t given any itinerary for the day otherwise. My partner had her first treatment which was 1/2 hour late , I visited the pool and steam , sauna etc, for which I have had Better in local council pools there was chipped tiles , cold sauna , dirty changing rooms. Then had tea , cakes and Prosecco which was meant to be in a relaxed area was a wedding reception in the same area so was sitting there in robes with a full blown wedding around us.. only positive was the facial and I certainly needed it.

To be fair the rooms and the food were fine.
That however is where it ends. Fawlty Towers should put you in the picture.
All of the staff look like they have just left school and find it hard to believe they have had any training, they certainly had little or no experience. No visible managers so it was like a rudderless ship just muddling through. Breakfast and dinner service was awful. Just putting meals down in front of people without even asking who had ordered what !
Breakfast was constantly running out and whilst a buffet style, you had to have staff put food on your plate ?? Covid perhaps ? I doubt it, all they did was introduce more people and risk into the area.
Hotel was fully booked and 1 member of staff behind the bar! Took ages to get served. Staff just wandering off in the middle of serving you.
Asked for 3 latte coffees to be told they only had 2 cups !
From the bar balcony there were empty bottles and cigarette packets scattered all over the grass and they stayed there for the 3 day stay. As a smoker ( I know, sorry !) You could not use the ashtrays around the place as they were all over flowing. They stayed that way too.
Out of 6 lights in the bedroom, 3 worked.
Golf courses were good but £35 for a buggy that you had to keep off the grass was a joke. Booked one as I had a bad foot but ended up walking twice as far.
Preferred the Championship course over the alleged Premier as that had no sand in any of the bunkers. Long courses and a good challenge. Greens were vicious !!!
All in all the hotel is all fur coat and no knickers !
Will never go back. Never.
