Not a 4 star

My husband & I stayed on 8/9/21. Having booked a 4 star hotel my biggest disappointment was that this hotel is very dated and tired looking. Reception area is not impressive however the receptionist greeted me with a smile and check-in was easy. The bedroom was spacious with a view of the front garden but again dated and the bathroom certainly needs to be upgraded. We were provided with bath robes and slippers which was a good touch and their towels were very good quality soft & fluffy. Swimming pool, steam rooms etc. are free to use and everything there was good. Pool is open until 9pm. Next morning we were greeted by friendly staff. Our young waitress came and took our order for tea & coffee but never came back to ask if we wanted anything from the breakfast menu which I did. After waiting for a while I just helped myself to what was available on the buffet. Why have a menu on the table if it’s not being served.
Parking is free. Cannot comment on dinner as we were going to York for our evening meal.
Handy if you are visiting York, but don't want to drive into the city.

Stayed on a two night signature package which included 2 nights B&B, a cream tea on one day, and credit of £30 each for one dinner at the Fat Abbot, the hotels own eaterie next door.
Not bad value. The rooms in the old part of the hotel are dated as others have mentioned but ours was clean and comfortable, although the bed was rather small for us as we are used to a King size.
Rooms are only serviced if you put out the sign on the door knob! We did, but it wasn't done. When I enquired I was told it was a busy arrivals day, so I said don't bother.
I think, like many other post covid establishments, shortages of staff are noticeable, but all the staff did their best. Special mention to Tyla the receptionist, and Mickey who went above and beyond to make us feel valued and welcome, with his service in the bar for Cream Tea making absolutely sure my Gluten free problem was suitably satisfied,

Had a nice stay in general. Nice grounds, beautiful approach to the building and cream tea was enjoyable. Very helpful waitress and breakfast staff who worked hard with a smile. Breakfast food is good. Room was spacious, bed a little hard. I do feel it is time for hotels in general to stop quoting COVID as a reason for not servicing the rooms every day. Restrictions are over and it’s not good enough to leave the beds unmade and bins unemptied for 3 days anymore. There is no price reduction for this lack of service . The spa was nice with a good massage as part of the package. There needs to be more loungers and chairs around the pool though as there was nowhere to sit when we arrived which is not what I would expect for a relaxing experience. Pleasant experience overall
