Hello, I was in Icon Hotel during 25th and 30th of jan of 2020 this hotel is on a steep slope st, in the worst and most messy and the most insecure neighborhoods and has the ost rude of restaurant staff although I know turkish language but I couldn't communicate with staff! By the way room facilities, such as mini bar, shower have problem and was so dirty nobody did nothing to repair it.The shampoo and soap fluid were the same.quality of breakfast is awful.this hotel is the worst as totally.
Bad neighborhood, unhelpful staff, mundane breakfast and lack of internet!
Reviewed 10 November, 2018
We booked 3 rooms to accommodate 7 people in this hotel and stayed for 7 nights. You have to walk 20 minutes from the hotel on a pretty steep slope to get to Taksim square which is tough for youngsters let alone for kids and elderly. The neighborhood is the hub for car mechanics and all sort of shady fellows come and go.
We had to beg the hotel staff to clean our room as there was no sign to hang on the door (even there was no "Do Not Disturb" sign!). Also we had to remind them to bring fresh towels as many as the people staying in the room!
The breakfast was lacking as there was only 3 hot meals available and some mornings you couldn't find sausages or even fried or scrambled eggs! There was no coffee machine on hand so you had to request a waiter to bring you coffee and it never is what you ordered!
The internet does not work most of the time. When we asked the receptionist, he said there is not much I can do. Our internet is limited!
For a four-star hotel, Icon Hotel leaves a lot to be desired! Don't waste your money here.
Best Horror Theme Hotel
Reviewed 6 November, 2018
The Best Place, if you like theme hotels, in this one will be a horror hotel. I always check reviews before booking a hotel, in this case, everything was looking to look good, I saw some negatives, but some people want gold for silver... back to the subject. staff is helpful and friendly people, but I'm not going to a hotel to make friends, the entry a little different, in the pictures have bulbs and great light everywhere. but in real life, lets called eco-friendly version, the outside is good if you came by car, and need to make a tune-up/ or car service, there are 2 hotels, and the rest are plenty of mechanics stations, Istanbul is not dangerous, but this zone looks non-secure.
Now.. the important, people pay a hotel mostly for sleep. I attach pictures of the bedroom and bathroom, is lack cleaning and maintenance. I was in 2 rooms, It was difficult to breath (I'm not asthmatic and no dramatic)and with the window wide open. You can see in the pictures the ceiling, the bathroom, and the walls it's also a perfect environment for planting mushrooms, and with the added value of the ashtray fragrance. I went to speak with reception regarding this situation (always kind and gentle) to tell them about the environment, the said hotel was full, but they can upgrade my room in the next 2 days to a suite, upgrade literally means from 2nd floor to 5th floor. but all remain the same, lack of cleaning, mushroom paradise, etc. I was aware that will be the same, I call booking to make a downgrade of another hotel. but the say was not possible.
Breakfast, I'm a street foodie, but this is not even a breakfast of 2 stars hotel, i don't know who wrote that breakfast amazing. I saw a lot of reviews claiming about the food. I was not looking for a Michelin star, but something with taste and natural, not vitamin C drink + orange chemistry and radioactive sausages. only one thing to save was the bread.
I'm still thinking why 4 Stars, based on what?
Facilities 1 / 5
Cleaning -9 / 5
Staff Service 4 / 5
Breakfast 1 / 5
I hope someone who reads this will be helpful before making a decision.
RAGGED, old, dirty, bad neighbourhood! Don't waste your money!
Reviewed 22 October, 2018
Everything in this hotel was of poor standard, low quality, old, used and dirty:
- old and stained towels bed sheets
- mould on walls and especially in the shower
- ragged courtains with stains, like never washed
- wi-fi very slow, useless
- located in an unpleasant neighbourhood (10 min to Taksim Sq, by steep and dodgy street), I was afraid to go there after dark
- even when we were upgraded to suite room with balcony we couldn't use it as the balcony door was broken and impossible to open (and it wasn't fixed during our stay although we asked for it a few times!)
Anyway the breakfast wasn't so bad and the receptionist were rather friendly.
After 4 days we changed to another hotel in different neighbourhood and it was so much cheaper and more pleasant.
Very bad hotel
Reviewed 15 October, 2018
My wife and I booked this hotel through Booking.com for 8 nights in October 2018.
Being an optimist, I only focused on “5 star” reviews and ignored all those 1 star ones which were absolutely true.
Below is a detailed review that I have put together based on our observations and experience;
1- Location: deep in a valley 20 minutes uphill walk to Taksim sq, very steep hill with no pedestrian pavement. We had to walk in the street manoeuvring between cars which horned at us several times very aggressively.
2- Neighbourhood: an absolute chaos, the area is very poor and dirty and full of messy car repair shops with lots of parked damaged cars around. Lots of engine oil puddles, trash and abandoned tyres everywhere.
3- TV: 42” LCD with very limited channels and a parental lock which doesn’t let you increase the volume for more than 20% (you cannot hear anything especially while windows are open)
4- Room view: hotel faces a very very ugly part of the city with demolished old apartments and some abandoned lots and several car repair shops as mentioned.
5- Bed: two single mattresses were attached with a huge valley in between that made any kind of sleep absolutely uncomfortable.
6- Air conditioning: not working! “open the window!” was the answer I received from staff when I asked for AC as it was warm and humid inside the room. Never underestimate Istanbul mosquitoes! Those flying vampires bit me in a way that my face was barely recognisable in the morning. (“Window” catch 22 situation: To open or not To open!)
7- Noise levels: extremely high! even with closed windows (for the sake of mosquitoes) we suffered from car repair hammering sounds and engine tuning during days and heavy noisy traffic, motorbike sounds and continues achy car horns 24/7.
8- Wifi: terrible! one device per passport! So weak and disappointingly slow. You won’t be able even to make an audio call on WhatsApp, imo etc.
9- Bathroom: floor, vanity unit and sanitary-ware were clean. Shower tray was grossly dirty with lots of black mold around the edges. I found lots of hair from the previous day on the shower tray after room service.
10- Room service: very disappointing as we only received 4 no. tea bags during our 8 nights of stay! They were only tidying up the bedsheets and not changing them despite the bad smell. Once I poured tea on the linen to force them to have it changed as it was absolutely stinky.
11- Breakfast: an average breakfast with very poor variety. Eggs were extra boiled and stale, musty bread and no coffee was available. Restaurant staff were unprofessional and hasty.
12- Staff: excluding one guy who checked us in, almost all of them were grumpy, unfriendly and cheap.
13- Overall: on the scale of 1 to 5, I believe the hotel deserves less than 1. I will never forget this awful experience and from now on I will consider “1 star” reviews as well.
I wonder who in the hell has given this disgusting place 4 stars and how!? Shouldn’t other 4 star hotels make a complaint against Booking.com or any other responsible organisations?
14- Recommendations: Don’t waste your money, time and holidays JUST AVOID THIS “HOT-HELL”!
