Lovely friendly hotel
Reviewed 25 september, 2022
Lovely hotel. Staff are friendly and helpful. Food is varied and good quality. The rooms are rather tired and could do with refurbishing. In these days where we all need to charge phones etc there is a distinct lack of points. I found, and from talking to others this is the same throughout, only one point underneath a bedside table (not easily visible or accessible). Any rooms over approximately #30, whichever floor, you will have a very long walk to your room from the lifts and the stairs. The ground floor pool is lovely with plenty of loungers and nice gardens. Good pool bar serving food and drinks.

Anyone staying here should read the book on the history of the hotel - how the land was acquired, the spaces were designed and furnished. Óscar Niemeyer created a curved hotel with open spaces. Instead of building the hotel facing the sea it is side on so all rooms have a partial sea view as well as the mountains. The dining room has a unique wall of windows, and the structural concrete pillars supports spiral staircases. There are niggles- as there would be in any building with over 500 bedrooms and as in all hotels it is probably difficult to keep staff post COVID. BUT: Breakfast was plentiful and there is more than enough variety and eggs were being made, to order There are plenty of tables and it never felt over-crowded. The room was spacious, and the double sink was useful. I didn’t mind having a shower curtain, it wasn’t dirty, nor did it smell, they can be taken down and cleaned easily without chemicals. The pools were excellent. The outside (downstairs) was a ‘proper length’ and the roof pool was great for a mid-morning or afternoon dip. The only noise issue we had from the casino was that twice nightly they played one song with lights, but it was quiet after 10pm. The staff were polite and helpful.
Not a 5-star hotel

The services delivered do not accord with a 5-star hotel. Not enough variety in choices at breakfast and diner. Waiters do not know the etiquette rules of servicing people. Bad/douche was too small. Cleaning rooms not at a fixed period of the dag so you were not sure when you could stay at the room for some time. I will not visit thuis hotel for a second time.

the room was dirty, the walls were dirty, the bathroom was dirty. There is no glass shower in the bathroom, the curtain is plastic. You urgently need to review the stars of this hotel. I do not recommend
Great architectural hotel, but needs work

Only just come back from a week in the Pestana Casino and Spa. Overall a great holiday but the hotel does have a few issues. The breakfast isnt great, with very poor coffee and tea facilities, all from combination machines. I only got a good cup of coffee in the hotel bar. The rooms need upgrading, having a fridge was great but no hot drinks facilities is poor in a 4/5 star hotel. Our room looked good on the surface, but when you looked further there were scuffs on all the walls, tables were marked and the carpet in front of the fridge and bathroom was threadbare. The hotel itself had a number of broken paving tiles, and we saw branches fall from some palm trees on at least 2 separate days, one could have fallen on us if we hadnt moved due to another branch almost hitting another guest close to us. That's unforgivable as it could cause actual harm. Good points, the staff were very helpful and check in/out was extremely easy. The pools are excellent. However, when we come back to Madeira we will stay elsewhere.
