Not a 5 star hotel

The plus side - hotel staff were really good and helpful with bus and taxi information. We booked a deluxe room and were glad as we had the whole floor to ourselves in one wing and a large balcony with wicker chairs. Our beds were changed when we used the card and our towels were good quality and also changed everyday The downside -The room was tired although large The beds still had blankets not quits definitely not good. and not hygienic. There was one bottle of water on the first day and no more even though we were there for 12 days A five star hotel usually has one or more bottles of water daily and a welcome bowl of fruit. as well as a business centre for guests. The shower as other people mentioned went boiling hot and then cooler. The toiletries were limited. We did have a visit from ants but I suppose this was to be expected in a botanic environment. Breakfast was good and we got our fried eggs everyday wit out any problems. The dining room was grand but dinner was not served until 7.30 and it was passed 8 when you got to eat ,which was a little too late for us One guest commented to us it was like an episode of a well known comical hotel about the same era (1970)The waiters fussed around first getting expensive water which they made sure your glasses kept getting filled although not many seemed to be drinking it, and then wine. We usually like a drink prior to dinner and so only had a soft drink with our meal which probably didn't suit .The meals were ok only 4 courses the main meat course was small and would not fill you up. We did complain about the dry chicken and the response was not their fault, and they just shrugged their shoulders. We did change our desert everyday and got fruit of different sorts which was good. The pool bar was expensive but the views were good. The pool chairs were not comfortable. The hotel is a way out of town but there is a good bus route to the Marina and the first trip cost 1.95 euros but you can then get a card with say 10 trips which works out 1.20 euro to a lot of places around the island. The lady at the office gave us a booklet with the places and buses to get using the tickets. There is a coffee shop and a very big supermarket around the corner where there was a good selection of wines to take back to our balcony and a good price. Do take a corkscrew with you as the bottles have corks. A good way to see the island was to book a yellow taxi for the day 110 euros for 8 hours. if there is 4 of you a better value. Our driver took us to many places tours do not visit and also parked so we didn't have to walk up hill.It was well worth the money as we could also stop when saw something interesting. Madeira is hilly and if you are not fit enough to walk the bus or taxis are the answer to see the island. Over all the hotel needs a lot of TLC

We returned a week ago from this hotel. It is set in lovely grounds with a mansion house full of antiques to look round, not sure if they have cctv or are very trusting as you just walk in! The mansion house is separate from the hotel although I think the a la carte meals are sometimes served in there. Reception staff were very helpful, there is a minibus into town, operates 1130 to 1630, weekdays only. A taxi into town is about 8 euros. The breakfast was fine, we had omelettes most days and the bread was fantastic. Down side, the evening meal, as has been said before, there was no choice at all, I don’t eat red meat and veal 🤢 was on the menu the first day. I was told I should have informed reception before 3pm if I wanted something different! I informed them after that and got mainly chicken for every meal! The shower was quite dangerous, as others have said, it suddenly got boiling hot for a few seconds. After a while, we could sort of predict when it would do this, but it wouldn’t be safe for children or the elderly. We enjoyed the peace and quiet, and lack of entertainment, we met another couple and had a few drinks in the evening at the pool bar which was nice. No drinks at all are included in half board, the water at dinner was about 4 euros, and the cheapest wine about 22, unless you get a taxi into town, you are a captive audience, and it worked out quite expensive in the end. To summarise, we had a nice holiday , but if we went to Madeira again, would prefer somewhere more central with more choices for meals!
NOT as ADVISED

First impression was pretty good as the as person behind the reception desk was polite and helped with our cases to our room, then we went to restaurant for our evening meal was not impressed as our meal was served up without any choice but thought this was because we were late arriving but we were wrong there was not any choice for the rest of our holiday as it was a set meal (not five star ) we decided to eat at the pool bar but this had to be paid for even though we had prepaid for our evening meal, The breakfast buffet was never different scrambled eggs every day and if you asked for fried eggs you thought that you had asked for a steak from their reaction We decided to go out to the nearest restaurant but they were unable to be visited as we could not walk to any as at 77 years old they weren't accessible by foot There was no entertainment at all some of the staff in the restaurant required retraining on customer care the hotel was very tired and in need of a lot of TLC overall we definitely would not be going back or recommending to our friends

We had a fantastic time at this hotel. The rooms were lovely and have everything you need for a comfortable stay. The food was amazing and the grounds beautiful. We will definitely be making a return visit to this hotel.
Very Good with a couple reservations

Staff are excellent, helpful friendly and efficient. Rooms..read that beds were hard and they are...was almost excited to get home to my own mattress and pillows. My bed was very creaky and I spoke to reception and it was fixed within hours. Bathroom ok, towels good and changed each day, shower nice and hot and not problems with temp changing. Place was clean and yes old fashioned charm etc but as we have travelled to Madeira many times would class it as fairly typical. Breakfast got very repetitive but wouldn't starve. Not sure how much of the lack of choice was down to Covid but scrambled eggs every day ... I am vegetarian and it was interesting to order a dish stating pasta and mushrooms to get very few mushrooms and a load of ham and other veg. They happily changed it when I explained but they need to sort out the menu and be clear what's in the dish. Ate at pool bar a few times and usually good. Ate in A La carte ...now this was disappointing ...the food was ok but not spectacular, not that hot, and for the price we paid felt it fell short. Location...yes lovely views and buses easily caught from 250metres away and quite frequent. We always use the local buses and didn't bother with courtesy bus. Covid must have affected every hotel in the world and it is hard to judge anywhere at the moment. This place has lots of good points especially if you want some peace and quiet.
