Truly Five Star!!

Best vacation yet! We have traveled to lots of AI resorts over the last 15 years in various locations. Secrets Cap Cana is hands down the best experience we have had. We were greeted at check in (Welcome Home) with cold towels and champagne. The entire staff is amazing!! Jorge checked in with us to make sure our check in was going smoothly and very quickly became a familiar face that was more than willing to help with any questions. Our concierge Sergio was also amazing- so much in fact that we asked to keep him when we upgraded to a room that included a Butler. Shout out to Esther in the coffee shop- always a smile! The staff truly cares that you are enjoying your trip. Beach is beautiful! Food is better than most AI! Would definitely return!
Overall A Good Experience

ARRIVAL: We we’re met with a cool towel and a glass of champagne. Then we were immediately taken to the preferred checkin hut. There is a bar there and we received our first of many wonderful tropical drinks. Check in was a breeze and Karla made it very painless and she made us feel very welcomed.
THE BUTLER: Our butler arrived after we were checked in and took us on a very short tour of the property, mainly the preferred side. He escorted us to our room and asked for my cell number so that we could stay in touch via texting. I received the activities newsletter every day from him via text. We also saw him multiple times a day around the preferred pool. I asked him to have a plate of fruit and cheese be delivered to our room every afternoon and it was there without fail. However, one day he told me that I was not eating all of the fruit and cheese and would I need another plate that afternoon. Apparently, the housekeeping staff was reporting on my eating habits in the room. What’s up with that?!
I asked him to have my floaty that I had brought with us blown up which he did.
He also decorated our room with rose petals for our anniversary and put a sign on our door. It was done a couple of days after our anniversary though. No cake, and no special dinner treatment at any of the restaurants.
A day or so before our departure, I wanted to know whether the DR airport security would allow me to carry something in particular through. I asked the butler if he could find out the answer for me and he told me to talk to the Delta Vacations representative. It took 4 trips to find the Delta rep. I felt like the butler could have and should have made an effort to get an answer for me instead of me having to take time to track down the Delta rep.
In addition, when we went for the Covid test the butler passed us off to someone else to walk us there. When we were leaving the resort the butler had us meet him at the preferred hut where he then proceeded to tell us that we could now walk ourselves to the lobby. I presume that he had us meet him there for the sole purpose of receiving his tip because he did not escort us to the front or even make sure that our luggage was there as it was not waiting for us when we arrived. I was nervous about the luggage and had to check frequently that it had arrived from our room.
To be honest I’m not sure that what he did for us couldn’t have been done by a room concierge.
THE PREFERRED POOL: It is very quiet and peaceful and the service is excellent. As soon as we found lounge chairs someone appeared with towels and placed them on our chairs. Then ice buckets with water appeared. We were checked on frequently by the waitstaff for drink orders. Every day someone came around with something new to eat or drink. One day it was pizza slices, then another day sliced mango, then apple popcycles in champagne among other treats. Every day fresh coconuts were brought around the pool in a wheelbarrow. The gentleman would sliced them open with a machete and put a straw in it for you to drink the coconut milk. Service around the pool was outstanding. Kudos go out to Xiomara who was one of the waitresses at the pool. She would surprise me with some new drink every day.
THE ROOM: There was a sign next to your door with your last name and Suite (Smith’s Suite). Nice touch. The Junior suite is quite large. The linens and bed are good quality and very comfortable. The towels are plush and large enough to wrap around you (the kind you would expect from a high end resort). There were extra towels left under the sink in storage baskets.
Be aware that if you open the sliding glass door the air conditioning turns off until you shut the door again. If you leave it cracked open even for a short while the entire room will sweat including the floor, walls, TV, and any electronics you brought. I have listed above the amenities, plugs and other info about the room.
THE FOOD: I think it is mostly mediocre at best. Breakfast at the Market Cafe was good but they seem to have had a shortage of butter from time to time. One day they had no butter at all at lunch time. The next day they gave out chunks of paste that passed as butter. One day they were out of rolls for breakfast. At the dinner venues the bread quality is not top notch and seems like they come out of a bag rather than freshly baked. The hibachi and French restaurants were by far the best of all of the restaurants in my never to be humble opinion. We ate twice at the the French Restaurant. Them soups in general were very good at all establishments. They do not know what arugula is and wouldn’t know a candied walnut if it hit them in the head. They just through nuts on the salads. They were extremely skimpy on the caramelized onions on the salads as well. You needed a magnifying glass to see them. My husband ordered a ribeye steak at the steak restaurant and the quality of meat was from hunger. It was extremely thin and just wasn’t high quality. The steak at the French restaurant was much better than at the steak one. The Rosewater restaurant at the preferred pool takes forever to order and get your food. The variety is limited and mostly heavy items. It would be nice if for lunch they had more sandwiches (they only have a hamburger) and pool/bar type of food. Also several days the Seaside Grille or Oceania was closed for dinner. This is either a function of supplier problems or they didn’t have enough staff or guests to be able to open. We also saw a guest vaping next to us in the French restaurant We let the manager know and he immediately addressed the problem. Overall, did we starve, absolutely not. I’m sure under the COVID situation they are trying their best. Could the food have been better, absolutely!
THE WATER: They advise you not to drink the water out of the faucet in the room. They provide a lot of water bottles for you. I even brushed my teeth with the bottled water to be extra safe. The water/ice in the restaurants and in the frozen drinks are ok to drink.
THE SHOWS: The Queen show and especially the Greatest Showman (acrobatics) are not to be missed. Go early as there is usually standing room only for those 2 shows. Several other shows we went to the singers were outstanding (the performer who sang Never Enough from the Greatest Showman is phenomenal) and several other shows were just so so. The band was good and the dancers had a lot of choreography to perform and they danced their hearts out.
THE LOBBY: It is a great place to hang out in the evening. Even when it rained we went there. During the bad weather in the lobby, they were passing food around including donuts, olives, chips and anything you wanted to drink. CoCo’s which is located in the lobby is open 24/7 for coffee, mini sandwiches and sweets.
THE SPA: It is wonderful. If you schedule a service you can use the hydrotherapy either an hour before (which I recommend in order to relax you before your massage) or an hour after. The hydrotherapy includes a sauna, steam room, hot and cold pools and a pool that has stations of different kinds of jets you activate. Imparo was my massage therapist and she did a fantastic job. She also seemed truly to care about my well being.
THE DREADED COVID TEST: It was scheduled by our butler. Prior to your appointment you have to fill out a form online which your butler texts to you, with your passport details, birthdate, name, etc. They do a rapid nasal swab and you wait in a room next door for the results. It takes about 10:minutes for the entire process. They come to tell you it’s negative and then email you the form you need for departure. Very fast and efficient.
COVID PROTOCOLS: We were informed that it is the company policy that all employees be vaccinated. We did run into 1 person who admitted that she was not vaccinated. We had agreed to the 90 minute (never takes 90 minutes, ours went over 2 hours) sales presentation. The woman had trouble keeping her mask on in general. She took us on the brief tour and also took us to breakfast where my husband, myself and the representative ate together without masks. She later told us she was NOT vaccinated per company rules and that she might decide later to get the shots.
When we arrived back at the office we immediately told the manager and she was very upset. So were we since we had spent time unmasked with this woman without being told of her vaccination status.
We really expected to hear a follow up apology regarding this situation but we were surprised that we never heard a word.
Other than this incident everyone wore masks and they seemed to take the situation seriously. The restaurants have fewer tables for appropriate spacing. The venue for the shows had 2 chairs together and then a large space and then 2 more chairs. When you enter the venue they take your temperature and give you hand sanitizer. The hand sanitizer is given to everyone at every restaurant as well.
MOSQUITOES: We often saw a person spraying around the pool for mosquitoes. They were also putting chemicals in the standing decorative water pools. So they were not a problem.
THE BEACH: There was plenty of seaweed in the water. The beach was very clean. We mostly hung out at the pool so no real feedback for you on the beach.
OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: Yeah baby, we had a wonderful time. We met a lot of interesting and fun other guests around the pool. The 7 days went by so quickly. We would not hesitate to go back. The staff seemed to want us to have a great time and they worked very hard to make that happen. Thank you to everyone who made that happen!

We had the best of times. Probably the best part was having our own Concierge, Carlos. He made everything completely worry free. Carlos provided us updates and activities daily. He would find us no matter where we were to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. He is a true professional.
