Overall Great Hotel
Perfect location on Waikiki with multiple amenities to enjoy during your stay. Parking/resort fees are high but what isn't on Waikiki water front? The breakfast in the beachfront restaurant was excellent as well, with a proper variety of stuff to choose from in the non-buffet setup of a COVID world. Go for the tower closer to the waterfront. The balconies facing the beach have an *impeccable* sunset vantage point.
Worth the money and the experience.
Phenomenal Facility and a Phenomenal staff. Even during Hawaii's COVID guidelines, every effort for normalcy was attempted and achieved. It is among the best Marriotts I have stayed at and will be back.
This was my first stay at this property in 7 years, so it was interesting to see what has changed and what has not. The hotel is situated on prime real estate - it has great views and easy beach access, but it doesn't leverage these assets, and especially at the moment, it felt abandoned in terms of amenities and attempts at making it desirable. Checkin was easy and swift. I was pleased with the COVID precautions used by the front desk staff. The lobby is really well done but lacks any kind of life. There's no bar at the hotel, but there's a Kona Brewing Co. stand in the lobby which I never once saw open, so it must be a relic. A very drab hallway with retail (again, aside from one store I never saw any of these establishments open) connects the lobby to the Kealohilani Tower lobby. The elevators, hallways, and rooms in Kealohilani Tower have been redone and are quite nice! I had an Oceanfront room, which really means that it faces west and has a great view of Waikiki beach. The lanai is spacious and had the most generous furniture offering I've seen at Waikiki properties - two chairs, a chaise, and a small table. The room itself was also quite spacious, and the bathroom was lovely. Note that noise from Kalakaua Ave in this area is very loud at all hours. The only problem was that the room I was given had clearly not be cleaned very well. As I started wiping down surfaces I found crumbs on the desk and table and the toilet seat had stains on it (and not old stains - they wiped right off). This is unacceptable at anytime but during a pandemic it is a complete failure, and made me question the safety measures the hotel was putting in place. I left to get some food and messaged the front desk in the Bonvoy app. To their credit, the team immediately offered me another room and had keys waiting for me at the front desk when I returned. My new room passed the cleanliness test. The next morning I had breakfast at Kuhio Beach Grill. This is the only food offering that is open at the hotel other than Arancino di Mare for dinner. On my first day, breakfast was pretty horribly organized. Kuhio Beach Grill is indoors, which is really not ideal for pandemic eating, so they offer "take away". I found a staff person who told me to sit at the bar to order take away food, and I waited 25 minutes before a server came to take my order, except that no menu had been provided. She was able to take a crumpled menu from her pocket, I ordered, and after 30 minutes I had food. Subsequent days ordering was much faster, so hopefully that was a fluke. The food was nothing spectacular, and the coffee was really not great - there are plenty of great coffee options around the hotel so do yourself a favor and get coffee elsewhere. I was again disappointed in the COVID precautions here. There was a server who I saw every day not wearing a mask over her nose. Literally 100% of the time. You'd think that some supervisor who had been trained that masks need to be worn over the nose and mouth would have taken corrective action, but that appeared to not be the case. Especially at a food service establishment, this could not be more unsafe. I overheard the same server encouraging diners to remove their masks, and I saw housekeeping staff several times not wearing masks at all. As mentioned elsewhere, the main pool is closed, which is fine because you have the beach right in front of the hotel, right? Well, the beach right in front of the hotel is closed for restoration, too, and that was not at all made clear. There's available beach on either side of the construction project, but it can get crowded, so plan accordingly. Other amenities at the hotel are really not existent. There's lots of abandoned retail, and very few food options on-site right now. There's so much that could be done with these spaces (imagine outdoor dining in that beautiful courtyard or beach front in front of the hotel!) but they have languished. Given this, I found the $37 daily resort fee (plus tax!) to be pretty insulting. I am still shocked that hotels include Wifi (which is a benefit to all Bonvoy members anyway) and long distance phone calls as resort fee amenities. Speaking of Wifi, as mentioned in other reviews, it is terribly weak, and doesn't work at all on the lanai, which is a shame. I'd much rather get work done on the lanai than indoors. The only useful amenity included in the resort fee was the beach chairs that can be retrieved from the bell desk in the lobby. But for $37 I could buy a new beach chair every day of my stay. I wasn't looking for much more than a great room and I think overall, this property checked that box, but the resort fee, lack of proper COVID precautions and otherwise drab facilities would cause me to stay elsewhere.
Good Waikiki Hotel
Very nice hotel right on Waikiki Beach and with great ocean views from the front tower. The rooms are recently updated with new fixtures and finishings, the only outdated item was our mini fridge but it still worked fine. One bummer was our balcony overlooking the closed pool deck where renovations are taking place, but being upgraded to an ocean front room was a nice perk so we could overlook the ugly pool onto the beautiful sunset. Make sure you plan two days ahead if you need to do laundry as laundry times are limited. The front desk was very accommodating with our many questions, our only feedback was that the man who checked us in after a long-delayed flight wasn't the friendliest. Easy walking distance to the beach and great proximity to a bunch of restaurants and shopping. Also, the hotel restaurant breakfast was way overpriced. We received breakfast credit since I have Marriott status so we didn't have to pay the full price but $15 for pancakes and buffet bacon is steep. Also, the dishes the breakfast is served in could be better. They use biodegradable bowls, which is great, but spring for the larger plates next time. Eating pancakes out of a bowl was awkward.
Wonderful and Met Expectations
Great location, clean, great view of the ocean and they don’t even call it an oceanfront room. Everything in the hotel room worked. Staff were friendly and polite. A neighboring room had a loud boom box and they took care of that. Thank you staff. I have no complaints. I give it 4 out of 5 because it would be nice to have a microwave and coffee machine and there’s a lot of homeless outside of the hotel but I suspect the hotel can do nothing about them. Also the balcony is much larger than other hotels in the area.
