surreal time travel experience in grand mansion
Reviewed 11 january, 2022
really special stay in a lavish mansion built for Otto Kahn in Long Island's gilded age. The size and scale are just stunning. We had a lovely meal with A+ service in the restaurant. Drinks later with the gracious and charming owner, who lives on the property. Wonderful spot with insane gardens and grand indoor spaces to lose yourself in time and place. Excellent spot for a staycation. We will certainly be back. Next time will opt for the guided tour of the property.

We felt as though we were either in Paris or went back in time at the turn of the century! Beth, a former teacher, was our spunky tour guide who shared her knowledge on the family history, castle restorations and current ownership with great interest and enthusiasm. Highly recommend having a meal, the surprise as the meal commences is worth the trip to the gym the following day.
The QUEEN X-Perience

My QUEEN X-Perience Usually I spin the globe 🌏 and choose a place to travel to celebrate my birthday. This COVID-19 Season requires a lot of CREATIVITY. I was searching online for UNIQUE things to do on Long Island and found the OHEKA Castle. This totally AMAZING place is strategically located on the North Shore on the GOLD Coast. You know your in for something SPECIAL once you slowly drive up the looong road between beautiful manicured hedges to the cobblestone parking lot. As soon as I arrived Fernando walked to my vehicle and asked how can I assist you? He unloaded our luggage, guided us inside and Valet parked my vehicle. He introduced us to Demeisha and she assisted us with our check-in. She offered us several rooms to choose from. We chose the perfect room #317. It was perfect. Now it was time to check out this 102-year old Castle. As we were walking down the hall we met this very nice gentleman. He told us he was the owner, Gary Melita. He even offered to sign our copies of the Images of America OHEKA Castle book. Unfortunately, our tour was CANCELLED, since a photoshoot was taking place by a well known American Designer. The OHEKA Castle truly tried their best to make sure my birthday stay was a memorable x-perience. The food was sooo delicious. We ate full breakfast, lunch & dinner. Our Waitress Bridget was AMAZING and very attentive to our needs. Waking up at OHEKA Castle on my birthday, made me feel like a QUEEN. I would definitely recommend staying at the OHEKA Castle. If your not able to spend the night, definitely make reservations for a memorable dinner.
A Must See Property (Eat there as well)

We took the tour and then had lunch. The tour was great and very informative as to the history and magnificient restoration of this gem. Lunch at Oheka was a very nice blend of superb, friendly service with delicious food. Amazing to experience how people in the gilded age lived. The ups and downs of this estate and then the restoration, and the attention to the smallest detail was a result of one man's vision and investment. Well wortha visit!
Restaurant Review Only -I have had better meals at a diner

Monday evening, 2 waitresses and only 8 tables in use. Our waitress claimed to work there for 3 years. Occasion wife's special birthday. First the good: Extensive bourbon and single malt scotch list. Valet couldn't have been more friendly. Place is romantic and has a special atmosphere. Appetizers were very good and nice sized portions. Crab Cake $29 and Caesar salad $18. They gave some toasted bread with melted cheese that was awesome. Now the Bad: Waited 10 minutes for water and bread came 10 min later with appetizer. Never came for a drink order and we ordered drinks when she took our meal order. Wife got Grilled Salmon $38 which says it comes with cauliflower puree. She got about 2oz of fish and honestly, I normally spill more on my shirt than the amount of puree she received. Looked like a teaspoon worth. She did say the fish was good. If told it was only a drizzle we would have ordered vegetables as a side. I got what was supposed to be a rack of lamb ordered medium $47. What I received were 2 lamb chops so overcooked that they were crunchie. I would have sent them back but not a waitress was to be found. My wife was waiting for me to eat and her food was getting cold so I eventually just ate them. The lentils served with them were very good. ***When I made the reservation I told them it was a birthday celebration. Also when my wife wasn't around I stopped a busboy and asked him to let our waitress know too. I gave her a present and card when we first sat down, which were on our table the whole meal. Obvious to others that it was her birthday. Not once did the waitress acknowledge it was her birthday. I was so sure they wouldn't even put a candle in her desert that I suggested we go elsewhere for desert and my wife agreed. I would like to go back and tour the castle and maybe get a drink at the bar, but never for a meal.
