Ghost of Former Glory

Reviewed 26 november, 2021

The Monaco hotel in Baltimore is a landmark, in a historic building with palatial rooms and furnishings. Really something special. That is why it is also relatively expensive. Unfortunately, prices have stayed where they were pre-Pandemic while the interior has been stripped of all amenities and service. It starts with the indifferent solo-manned checkin with a resulting long line. We were then informed that the restaurant is closed three nights a week and every day for breakfast, leaving guests to venture out into the subzero cold for something to eat and drink. Behind the reception is a fairly pitiful homemade vending machine, like in a youth hostel. In the rooms, no glassware, just plastic cups in cellophane like in a cheap motel. The list goes on. The place is simply deserted, abandoned, with only a skeleton crew in attendance. I know COVID has impacted things, but this is absurd. If you want your room cleaned during the day, you have to call and request that. The concept of door-hanger signs to this effect has not yet reached this hotel. And if you forget, you are told that it is no longer possible after 4 PM. This was a major disappointment, and this hotel certainly not worthy of the Kimpton brand.

1-Night Stay

Reviewed 23 november, 2021

Stayed for one night in a Spa Suite - King Bed. Valet was polite but seemed overwhelmed. The front desk staff greeted us and talked about the various amenities such as the wine hour and morning coffee and tea. We were very impressed with that hotel’s architecture and feel. We ordered takeout from the B&O. The staff seemed overwhelmed but was apologetic and it looked like they had a busy night, so I don’t hold it against them. I would pass on the Cesar Salad and chicken cutlet - not worth your money for what you got. However, the burger and fries were tasty. The room was spacious with very tall ceilings. The AC/Heat was top notch and the deep soaking tub with jets was very nice. The reason for not getting a 5 out of 5 is there were some worn out items in the room (carpet ripped, missing handles on doors, odd painted paper on the bathroom walls, and black marks across some walls) and a lack of luster. If attention to detail was improved, this would be a grand hotel. I’m glad I got to stay there, but it’s hard to justify the cost.

nice rooms, but too expensive

Reviewed 21 november, 2021

It’s a grand old hotel in a somewhat central location of the city. Our room was exceptionally large, as well as clean and comfortable. The staff were also friendly. But I’m not sure if I’d stay there again. The room rate was somewhat high, the cost for parking was exceptionally high, and the hotel didn’t offer breakfast or free WiFi.

Security concerns

Reviewed 19 november, 2021

Our first two days were fine. Employees were quite accommodating. On check out day however, our experience changed drastically. We experienced an attempted security breach during our stay here in November. We stayed two nights here. We left our room for a short time. We had not checked out yet and a "do not disturb" sign was on the door. We got back just in time to see a man entering the room with a key card. When we asked what he was doing, he didn't respond. (There may have been a language issue). We called the front desk immediately and talked to Nina and asked why someone was trying to get into the room. She said she'd check. We didn't hear back but after an hour so we went to the front desk. Nina said she contacted housekeeping to see if the individual was an employee but hadn't heard back. We told Nina and a man with a security badge that we wanted to know what the guy was doing trying to get into the room. The man with the badge said "he worked for the FBI" and laughed as he walked away from the front desk. Nina said she called housekeeping to see if the man was an employee. She claimed no one called her back for an hour and then said they informed her he was a room attendant but she could not answer why he was trying to get into our room while we were out. We had to call the hotel manager ourselves from the front desk because she wouldn't. A few hours later, the manager...Carlos called us back. We explained all the irregularities that we saw. Carlos said he would talk to the employees. We asked for a call back from him. We are still waiting. The lack of security for guests and lack of follow up by management indicates they don't take security seriously. The corporate owner Kimpton, should handle this.

Kimpton at its worst

Reviewed 18 november, 2021

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to write this terrible review, but after hearing no apologies or concern from corporate or the GM I am. I won’t go into details but the staff here ruined my birthday. I actually spent over $500 on a suite at rack rate and felt depressed when I left. The staff here seemed generally miserable. The front desk ladies had no hospitality skills whatsoever. From check in to check out I had a lousy time and I wish I never stayed there. I’d like to know why nobody followed up with me when I expressed my frustration. I am so sad that Kimpton would allow this kind of experience and never apologize to me . I blame IHG.
