Great Staff, Location and Views!

Reviewed 17 january, 2023

My fiancée and I just returned from a 6 day break in Lisbon with Hotel Mundial as our base. We cannot speak highly enough of the staff, who were attentive from the moment we checked in to the incredible efficient and hard working room cleaning team and the bar staff throughout. The location really is in a prime position, walking distance from the great and popular areas such as Bairro Alto, Alfama, Chiado/Baixa, Praça Do Comercio/Arca da Rua Augusta, and if you fancy a good walk up the hills (as we do) then you can walk to the Castle of São Jorge with some beautiful stops along the way. The views themselves from the hotel roof bar are incredible, I had read about people finding it hard to get a table as it's also open to the public with no reservation system in place for hotel guests, however given that it was mid-January, we were able to get a table every night for a night cap with a beautiful view of the Castle of São Jorge. The staff were very attentive and the night we stayed until close they offered to take our drinks to allow us to continue them to the ground floor bar. We did so and the staff in this bar were just as friendly and attentive. The breakfast is also great, ours was included every morning and ranges from hot components such as eggs (always scrambled plus a variation between fried, boiled etc), bacon, sausages, beans, tomatoes to cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit, cold meats and cheeses, breads, several coffee machines, tea and much more! We loved getting up every morning and even on the busiest day (Sunday morning) we were seated within 5 minutes of waiting. The efficiency of the hotel's running and the staff that make sure it happens is second to none. For extra positives, right next door is a good sized supermarket with a fresh bakery, refrigerated drinks, foods, toiletries, sweets and much more - great if you want to pick up a few things and keep in the fridge in your room! The view from our room was incredible, we could look directly out of our room and see the castle on the top of the hill. Our room was spacious with plenty of storage and a decent sized bathroom. The bath was big and deep so a very relaxing time. It is clear that the rooms are dated, don't get me wrong, they are amazingly clean and any time maid service was used it was always to the highest standard but some updates could be implemented. The decor is nice and suits the hotel but is not modern design if that's what you're looking for. The TV, whilst sufficient, is small but has plenty on offer including the ability to see your current room bill, what the hotel has to offer, room service and lots of channels. The air conditioning/fan didn't seem to do much for our room and felt like it had no effect on the temperature of the room. There are very few plug sockets available, if you want to charge your phone next to the bed - be ready to unplug the bedside lamp as the only other one that was visible was a walk across the room. The main negative point was the windows - we had a room on the fourth floor (414) facing the street and it was VERY loud. Being from London, traffic and people noises actually don't bother either of us much at all and add to a background noise that can often help us sleep rather than hinder it - but for those less accustomed it could be a very big problem. The trams, tuktuks, late night drinkers, buses, sirens, general traffic all became noticeably loud to the point where it felt like the window was wide open when it was a closed shut as it could be, so the glazing/sealing is not good at protecting your room from the sounds of the city at all. The walls between rooms are also very thin so we could hear conversations of neighbouring rooms when they returned at about 3am or the taps in their bathrooms being turned on. This all being said, it did not hinder our stay at all in our favourite city. Staying in such a prime, central city location means you are going to have to trade off with noise - but it really was worth the trade off. The staff at the entire Hotel Mundial were so friendly, helpful and attentive and deserve all the praise...alongside the views of course! We loved our stay very much and for location plus value for money, you'd be hard pushed to find a place that rivals Mundial.

Hotel Mundial

Just had 2 weeks there. Excellent hotel in a very convenient downtown location. Staff friendly and helpful. Room facing hotel courtyard was quiet from both outside and internal noise. Good shower which didn't alternately boil and freeze and the temperature control in the room actually did something. If that all sounds too good, the breakfasts got a bit monotonous after a couple of weeks and the room we first occupied, on the outer side, was a bit noisy All in all, highly recommended. I have stayed in 5* hotels that were far worse

Stayed for one evening in November prior to a cruise. Check in quick and easy, room was 3rd floor and a triple room for the two of us. Two comfy beds, very clean and easy walking distance to everything you need to see in less than 24 hrs. Breakfast was self serve hot and cold food and very good Tram 28 starts next to the hotel and is well worth the trip around the city, you can pay when boarding. No complaints and definitely recommend the hotel, staff very helpful too
