This is the kind of hotel experience I have nightmares about. I booked this hotel because I was in L.A. for a long-term stay on business and just needed a clean, quiet place to sleep and work. When I arrived, instead of the room I booked online, I was given a seriously dank and crusty room that smelled of cigarette smoke and car air freshener. There were weird brown marks all over the walls, everything was dusty, the furniture was stained, half the lights didn't even have bulbs, and worst of all was the dried-up urine stains on the toilet seat. I tried to have a good attitude but after about 20 minutes I decided I just couldn't stay there so booked another hotel for the next few nights.
Here's where the story turns for the worse. I messaged the hotel and let them know I was leaving because the room I had was not the room I reserved. I said I was fine paying for the room and parking for the night but that I'd not be staying there for the rest of my originally booked stay. When I looked at my account the next day, they had charged my card for the whole thing including parking (around $4000)! After countless ignored emails and a few brief responses from the hotel noting their promise of a refund with no action, I finally had to contest the charge through my bank. For 20 minutes in a hotel room, it took a whole month for me to get my money back. If I hadn't contested the charge, I am positive I would have never seen that $4000 again.
I can't tell what's going on with this property but is it super shady. Their website photos are completely misleading and if they do get you in their trap, it will be a very long road trying to get out. DO NOT STAY HERE is my very basic and clear warning to all.

This hotel has a soul. It 's been there forever. The staff is amazing. the room are nice, i think the older building is best, where the ghost of past celebrities hang out. The restaurent in situ is a classic hollywood diner. The area is also very classic hollywood bohemian chic. love it all

Hi. My boyfriend and I stayed at the Hollywood Hills Hotel in August of 2012. At the time, it was part of the Magic Castle Hotel, owned by the same man. We checked in at the Magic Castle Hotel front desk and drove up the hill to the H.H. Hotel. Bada bing bada boom, easy breezy. We loved it there, and wanted to stay once again at the end of Feb. 2019. We were booked into the Magic Castle Hotel, and found that due to room renovations, our room had that ugly, cold, sterile, granite and chrome look, and was no longer cozy and comfy, the way they had once been. So we decided we would ask for a room up the hill instead at H.H., but turns out M.C. no longer owns the property. We could not find a phone number or any online booking for H.H. Hotel, so we drove up the hill to inquire personally. Now things get REALLY mysterious. There is a call box outside the gate leading onto the property. For manager, press 2. We did this repeatedly and got a message, "line is busy." We climbed around the back of the hotel and found a maintenance worker who said the manager is a woman named Nellie who keeps an office upstairs at the Yamashiro restaurant, which is right there literally across from the hotel. We could not gain entrance to the restaurant, locked. Then a fellow actually came out of the H.H. Hotel entrance gate, as if he lived there, on his way to work at Yamashiro. We inquired about Nellie and he said he would get her for us, and brought us inside the restaurant to wait. He disappeared. 20 minutes later, we asked another guy where he disappeared to, and he said he would go talk to Nellie himself. Then he disappeared. Eventually, the 2nd guy came back and said Nellie had requested all our information, and would contact us about renting a room. He also said that the only way to book this hotel online is through air bnb website. We left, Nellie never contacted us, and this hotel is absolutely NOT listed on the air bnb website. Now Trip Advisor has been sending me promo for it, as I have googled the damn place so often to see what the hell is going on, and they give the option to put in dates and book a room. I have put in multiple dates from now up til 6 months from now, and I get, "This hotel is sold out on those dates." THERE IS SOMETHING REALLY FISHY GOING ON WITH THIS HOTEL. If anyone knows what the actual truth is about Hollywood Hills Hotel, PLEASE write in to this website and enlighten us all. "Nellie" certainly doesn't want anyone's business, so what's the story? Please someone reply to my query. Thank you!!!!!

The homeless are like slow moving zombies. Book it back up the hill to the hotel!
North of Franklin, south is the real world. The stairway in the back of the 7 + acre property is deserted and old timey.... drink beer there and check out the unwashed masses.
(I am on SSI myself but stayed here for a while, it is not cheap, gives pause for thought) oh, Janis Joplin croaked next door, 47 yrs ago.
Silver Wedding Anniversary - A Wonderful 4 Night Stay

My wife and I celebrated our Silver Wedding Anniversary with a trip to the West coast of the USA in May/June this year, culminating in a 4 night stay at the Hollywood Hills Hotel. Upon arrival we were greeted by some of the friendliest reception staff that I have ever met, just what we needed after a long drive from San Francisco. Within 10 minutes we were in our room and immediately found that the receptionists had taken the trouble to leave an anniversary card, rose petals, a bottle of wine and a celebration cake for us. To say that we were delighted would be an understatement. The wonderful level of service shown on arrival continued throughout our stay, literally nothing was too much trouble including offering a courtesy shuttle from the main hotel up the hill to the apartment hotel – quite a steep walk after a long day sightseeing. We booked roomed 405 which had a fantastic view over Hollywood, even more impressive at night with the lights twinkling. The location is perfect, just a 10 minute stroll to the Walk of Stars and the Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. The apartment hotel is actually an old apartment block which is in the process of being renovated although we didn’t notice any noise or inconvenience at all from construction work during our stay. The rooms are large and well equipped with a kitchenette, great for some home cooking if you’ve had enough too much of eating out. All rooms have Wi-Fi although the quality of the connection can be a bit hit and miss. We took a portable Wi-Fi router with us which we plugged into the network socket in the room, no more weak Wi-Fi signals !. We did have one issue shortly after arrival where the bathroom in our room had no running cold or hot water so we couldn’t bath or shower. We reported the problem and on our second day we were assured that this had been fixed but were disappointed to find when we got back to our room that it had not been fixed at all and that we still couldn’t have a wash. This was an avoidable mistake which the hotel should have foreseen, why put a guest in a room which has no running water in the bathroom ?. To their great credit though the receptionists handled the problem so well that it took away any bad feeling that we might have otherwise have had from the experience, especially after 2 days of not being able to wash – yuck. The receptionists quickly offered us an upgraded room at no additional cost, gave us 1 night free stay as compensation and even offered to move our things for us. We were upgraded to room 504 which is a newly renovated room and my word, what a difference !. The quality of the room was first class with a even better view over Hollywood due to being one floor up from our previous room. The room furnishings were high quality, a huge comfortable bed, a large flat screen TV, a well-equipped kitchenette and a clean and spacious shower.
Would we stay here again ?, yes – in a heartbeat. Although the quality of our original room was lower than expected the service that we received more than made up for it. The hotel put the issue right quickly and efficiently and particular thanks go to Shannon at reception who was absolutely fantastic throughout.
Just one tip if you intend to stay here, make sure that you book one of the newly renovated rooms. The old style rooms are a little dated, a bit scruffy and as we now know can have problems with the basics such as running water.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were treated so well that we’ll definitely be back at some point in the future. With customer service as good as this and with newly renovated rooms available I expect that this hotel is about to become very popular indeed.
