Quite simply the most beautiful Hotel I have never stayed in in my life; the service is magnificent and the staff are Sublime. The cocktails that are served in the garden restaurant are absolutely out of this world; the food is gorgeous the views are amazing and the hotel itself is beyond description.
I cannot think of anywhere that I would prefer to stay than this amazing hotel with it’s spectacular staff; truly the best experience of my life in any hotel in Europe.
No aircon and noisy room

It is with hesitation that I write this review as the staff were so incredibly kind. We have been staying at the ritz in Madrid for years and couldn’t wait to try it out after the renovations. We were expecting some teething problems as it had just re opened. They forget to send a car to collect us, and forgot to let us know that they had forgotten to order the car. I had asked ten days before to book us a table on the terrace for lunch, they said it was fully booked until I complained and said we had booked two rooms for 4 nights and it was unacceptable for us not to be able to eat in the restaurant. Not only did they find us a table, but they booked us two tables! (A case of the right hand not speaking to the left hand)The meal in itself was not good. A silly pretentious menu, minuscule portions and nothing appetising. We ordered the avocado and shrimp soup. The bowl arrived with a few cut up vegetables and they poured in a thimble full of broth, and with a pair of chop sticks added 3 small shrimps. The kind crab claw was covered in béchamel. No gaspacho on the menu. It was trying to be fusion trendy but that is not what the ritz is about. Until 3pm there was an opera singer, and after 3pm there was a DJ playing techno music.
The check-in was chaotic. They had us down for two nights when we had booked for 4. It took way too long. These are details which will be ironed out.
However, what will be harder to fix are the structural issues. The air con is fixed on an eco mode which means it barely works. It was colder outside than inside. Madrid can get very hot and air con is an important element in a hotel like the ritz. The technician tried to override the system half a dozen times. We threatened to leave unless they fixed it. They improved it marginally but it was far from good.
The bathroom designs are idiotic unless you are eighteen years old. There is a free standing shower in the middle of the room with no doors. Water goes everywhere. I like privacy when I am washing and believe that most people would agree with this. I’m not sure what the designer had in mind when he did this. The loos are in a separate room which is very nice except the door is so heavy, almost like a safe door, that if you need to get up in the night, it is very difficult to open this heavy door without making a lot of noise. The door slams shut, so we had to put the bin in the door to keep it open.
Finally, and most problematic was the noise. You can hear from the bedroom, everyone in the corridor, whether they are talking, closing their doors, walking. It is shocking how noisy the rooms are.
It is very very sad to see what has happened to our beloved ritz. The staff could not have been nicer. We were clearly not the only guests complaining about the air con and the noise. They felt overwhelmed. I hope they manage to resolve these issues but in the meantime we will not be going back.
An unforgettable stay

I was a bit skeptical to book after reading the previous reviews, but then I thought I should go ahead and give it a chance as I’ve always loved all my stays at the Mandrin Oriental around the world. And indeed, they didn’t disappoint me. Everything was prepared as per our communication. They even double-upgraded us to a junior suite. Restaurant bookings weren’t easy as they were full but they went out of their way to accommodate our needs and in the end everything worked out beautifully! And they made my boyfriend’s birthday. Eye special indeed. Miriam and Victoria at the reservations were absolutely wonderful and attentive. Carlos and Andrea at the reception were wonderful with our check-in process. Concierge service was excellent too and I forget the lovely woman who helped us book a table at the reopening of Corral de la Moreria, she was a pro and on top of her game. When got there, we had the best table in the house! The junior suite was elegant and spacious enough overlooking the Prado museum, and the bathroom was beautiful as well. Now the food- to be honest, I wasn’t too impressed with the food at el jardin: we had the lamb, sea bass, monk fish and my guests and I agreed the fish was better. But really, who cares when you are eating in such a beautiful garden! I’d say having drinks in el jardin would be perfect! Breakfast at Palm Court was elegantly prepared and eggs Benedict was one of the best we had. We also tried the caviar, oyster and the champagne at the Champaign Bar and they were sublime! Too bad I never got to see the glorious historic RITZ and it may have lost its charm a bit maybe, like many do when they undergo a major renovation. But my Spaniard friends who were with me tell me thé hôtel is still just as elegant, beautiful and glamorous as it always has been! And I believe them! Oh btw, don’t forget to make some time to enjoy the beautiful Retiro Park. Thank you so much everyone at the MORitz! We will be back again.
First time after the renovation and last one

Poor service and lack of communication and organization between the staff members. Definitely, not recommended. First time after the renovation and probably the last one. We went with my family to celebrated Mother’s Day and it was a completely disaster. Hope a 5 start hotels can improve their service
Bad service, tacky decor and terribly stupidly exclusive

The renovation is disrespectful to the building. They’ve put a terrarium top on the lobby bar (who wants a hothouse in Madrid in the summer!) and have neutered the hotel of all of its character.
That said, the staff are aloof. They don’t take restaurant reservations for parties under 5. We rang ahead and so they encouraged us to just show up. At the door we were told we should leave because they were reservations only. We talked our way into the place and were told we should have called first... which we had. We were told that “our kind” might be happier elsewhere. Not sure what they thought but I can assume as we were to men they were being homophobic. Well, they have no idea of my wealth but I can assure you we will never be back!
The food is much better at the Palace anyway. We went across and there was an Opera brunch for only €100 per person! Lovely food, song and great service.
