BEWARE… unless you want to experience DR locals on holiday!

Reviewed 3 august, 2022

Booked Playabachata in April for end of July family holiday through Sunwing/Voyage à Rabais at good price. Reviews at that time seemed ok and partial so we took a chance. Approaching travel dates I started noticing bad reviews and hoped for the best, but now I feel obligated to also warn others before booking this resort. This Puerto Plata resort is very old but maintenance is acceptable and staff are continuously cleaning. Guest services are super nice, and thanks to Paola we were able to salvage our holiday … at a cost. The major issue is probably due to the period at which we travelled (which we’ve done in the past in other regions of DR such as Punta Cana and Samana which caters mostly to the tourists and so they don’t have these issues. At the Playabachata, the visitors are 90% locals. They are on vacation with many children in tow and are loud, impolite, dirty (leaving food everywhere), they push and shove at the buffet picking at food without any concern for hygiene (especially when COVID is still around)…. The music is excessively loud and only in Spanish, same for the entertainment which you can hear till 1am from your Ill-isolated room even when staying at blocks closest to the beach… Don’t be fooled by comments that they only come on weekends … they are there all week and more come just to celebrate and take over the resort on the weekend. Resort occupancy is at 50% and as a result only half the resort is actually open during the week, but on weekends they open the other side to accommodate another 500-1000 local guests. Needless to say we tourists were a minority. The only plus side is that they tend to invade the pool area (every sq foot) but leave the beach empty which is good for us as that is normally the reason we go south for our holidays. The buffet has no AC, open doors/windows therefore fruit flies and other insects abound …. The specialty (Italian and steak) take place in the outdoor snack bar on alternating nights. Cannot comment since we did not stay to experience it, but have heard from others that stayed that it was horrible. After one sleepless night we decided to do as most people that came in on our bus and upgrade to neighbouring Senator Resort at $80/night per room, an unexpected expense which saved our holiday but had we foreseen the final cost, much better options would have been considered prior to booking. Having travelled in DR, Jamaica and Cuba …. This is by far the worst resort we have ever experienced, even though we left after one night. So unless you are ready to dish out extra$$$ to change hotels, choose another resort. Definitely not a 4 star as advertised, this is a 2.5 at most.

Black Mold

Reviewed 19 july, 2022

I don’t usually write reviews about the places I go, but this is very concerning, since it is a heath issue. There is a serious black mold situation in this resort. We were able to smell the humidity as soon as we walked in the room. The second night, I requested a change of room and the situation was the same. You can see the black mold in the air conditioner conduct and it is visible that they paint the walls to cover the mold. Even thought, during the day I left the balcony door and window opened, the smell was horrible and very strong. Four nights of nasal congestion, coughing, sneezing, and itchy eyes, nose, and throat, which ruined my days. If they clean, this would be a nice place to stay. The view of the beach from my “mold infected room” was amazing. If you still decide to go, do yourself a favor and avoid visiting during the weekend (that’s a comment, that I will not be commenting about)

Disappointed

Reviewed 14 july, 2022

I have been to all the areas in DR, but this time I brought 8 people. I did a lot of research on Playabchata Resort before coming. But what is seen on the web page is not where we stayed??the choice of Restaurants is none. They convert the “snack bar” into the Steak house on one night and then the Italian the other night. There is nothing open 24/7 and they close the pool at 7pm. We were shown the property and told the Japanese house was extra. Which is by the Steak house, but not the one we are allowed to use. The property is shared by a hotel, which is where we thought we were staying. Worse experience of my life. Lots of crying as we’re are staying 14 days.

Worst experience, rooms are old full of mold

Reviewed 11 july, 2022

Rooms are old full of mold, crib provided was dirty, food was horrible, the water to shower in the rooms came dirty (see pictures) they treated us like we were not paying for the service that was not received, we were told that they couldn’t get the manager that goes above Vanessa as it was his rest day when we were there paying to rest and couldn’t rest at all due to all the inconveniences . My baby of 7 months got sick due to the water she got a rash they sent me to the doctor after fighting with them but no one follow up on her health as she got worts. They forced us to signed a letter were we can’t come back with legal issues (I was forced to sign it if not we couldn’t leave). Don’t go there if you don’t want to lose your money as they won’t compensate you monetarily. Worst customer service and management.

Great Resort, Excellent Service!

Reviewed 4 july, 2022

There was excellent service, great food and awesome scenery. I received amazing service from all of the staff, especially Chocolate and Frijolito. It was a great stay and I’m already planning my next one here with a larger group of friends!
