Smug, Old and Complacent

Let's get one thing clear. This isn't a bad place. Nothing terrible happened. It's just spectacularly ordinary.
However, judging by the attitude from the majority of staff you'd think it was the best place in the Med (OK I know this is the Atlantic coast, but you get my point!!).
There is simply no effort to be better, so everything looks like a relic from the 1970's.
An example is our room was cluttered with needless furniture - all of which we either dismantled (only to be told off) and put into the bottom of the wardrobe or placed outside on the balcony. Why do we need a stool in a bathroom, where you can barely fit one person, never mind two?
I sensed it was pointless discussing with the staff on arrival and was proven correct. Any issues were met with a 'how dare you criticise this great hotel' manner as opposed to trying to get things altered.
There were a few exceptions. The late night bar served excellent cocktails - but only if it was one particular person. Breakfast had some very willing female staff, who actually acted that they realised that we were customers. It was astonishing, just how many younger male staff were offhand, to the point of rudeness.
All of this would have been fine, if it wasn't for the antiquated pool area which looks in badly of need of a refurb. Worse, the cleaner(s) in the area seemed to realise this and so couldn't be bothered cleaning it properly. When I left my sunglasses on the floor - they were still there the following morning. So much for their rigorous Covid cleaning policy!! Pointed this out and it was met with a shrug of the shoulders that was complacent, we could have been in France.
And let's not forget the pathetic wrist bands, that you had to where or else be threatened with deportation!! They were just an opened band the GUESTS had to seal themselves. Hilarious!! Haven't they heard of velcro or clips??
Confused Covid policy at the pool bar. Ice cream freezer with sanitizer nearby, but apparently only staff could get the ices!! Of course their hands are naturally cleaner than everyone else's, despite not a single one of them ever sanitizing their hands before entering the freezer. What's the point of the sanitizer if customers sanitizing their hands isn't good enough?
Like someone else pointed out, the breakfast was boring with no imagination - just the same thing every day. I'll accept that if the staff were a bit more humble, but as to them this is The Ritz - I expect more.
The sad thing that this hotel is beautifully positioned and everything about Monte Gordo was very positive. Don't be put off. It's not bad - but I suspect the hotel next door was better.
But when you have residents visiting for the 14th year (fact) and you realise it's clear the hotel makes probably 80% of it's money from returning guests - average age of 70 (note I'm 59) why bother bringing it into 2021?
Sea / Beach View - Very Good Location

The most value of this hotel is the location a few meters from the beach.
But....the majority of the furniture is really old, from the 50's, and some parts of the hotel need to be modernized.
For the price (3 star hotel) it is really expensive compared with 4 star hotels located 100m away and really new.
Also the breakfast that was different from the other hotels because there was natural orange juice, this time they changed to artificial orange juice. Its a piety because those small details make the difference
Also the room doors (has they are old and do not have absorbers) make a big impact and a lot of noise when they close

We visited at the end of August for a week. The hotel is vintage but very clean, perfect for a summer vacation, in front of the beach. We like to highlight the cleaning of room and general hotel, the pool is perfect, very well-kept gardens, the breakfast was great. But most of all we would like to thanks all the staff of sympathy and help, You're great, in special to the breakfast staff, they work a lot to prepare all the breakfast for every single guest in COVID-19 time. For all of you a HUGE thanks, you're a big team. Please go visit Vasco da Gama next time you visit Monte Gordo, they deserve a visit :)
Thanks to the staff

This was our first holiday in Portugal and first impressions as you arrive outside and into reception are good - check in was quick (we had arrived later than expected due to an error on the part of Easyjet with our transfer). We had a room overlooking the front of the hotel which is not the best side and at times was fairly chilly as it was north facing. The room was somewhat dated and is in much need of an upgrade although kept spotless. Mealtimes were an eye opener. The restaurant opened at 6.30 and by that time there is a substantial queue. The food is plentiful, but they do need to think about labelling the dishes a bit better. The choices for vegetarians are not particularly good. We were pleasantly surprised to find the area very good for walking with a National Park just along the road and the boardwalks all along the seafront makes for a very pleasant walk. All in all we enjoyed our holiday, good weather, plenty of sunbeds (most of the time) and very quiet with no children. Also there is a small garden area which is nice to sit in if you want to be away from the pool.
