Horrific Vacation Stay
Reviewed 14 january, 2023
I’m not new to international travel. After a career in the U.S. Air Force, and also working as a tour guide in Europe, and not to mention annual (sometimes multiple trips) international trips since 2008 – I’m familiar with the standards of European hotels. For this review, I’m calling out the Marriott Hotel, specifically the Marriott Hotel in Munich on Berliner Strasse. I was persuaded by a travel agent friend to try Delta Vacations, which, in this case included the Munich Marriott. This turned out to be a less than great decision… My stay here was horrifically bad. During my 5 day stay from December 26th, 2022 to December 31st, 2022 I averaged 2-3 hours of sleep a night because the hotel’s heating & cooling system could not be controlled. My room was so hot that you could not sleep. The thermostat was inoperable. Room 374 should be rejected immediately if you ever have to stay at this hotel. I was repeatedly told that the engineering technical team would respond – and, eventually they did, but could offer only to open a window. After 3 days, I asked to speak to the General Manager, but never got that courtesy. They did send up a personal fan (just want to remind you that this is a Marriott property). On the 4th morning I was offered a room change. I politely declined because upon check in I dutifully unpacked my suitcase and stored my belongings in drawers provided, while hanging up what I needed in terms of trousers & shirts. I would have thought that it was very obvious that I did not want to spend my vacation time repacking & unpacking again – after spending all that money to get to Germany! This is a Marriott hotel after all. Isn’t there a certain level of customer expectation regarding service levels in a hotel like Marriott? Apparently not…they wrecked my vacation because I couldn’t sleep. To be clear, I have asked for nothing from Marriott – nor would I ever. I left the chain for Hilton & IHG years ago because of issues just like this…with the same nonresponsive attitude from the corporate or general manager level. This is just a caution to anyone taking a trip, and needing a hotel. The message is simply this, you cannot judge a hotel by the name. Marriott is an international brand, but apparently has allowed the hotel’s standards to slip. Consider another hotel that has processes that include better customer service.

This is a wonderful hotel! The staff are amazing.

I arrived in Munich in early January but alas... got Covid just as I came. So my trip to this beautiful city was instead one of isolation in a hotel room. BUT... I had a completely wonderful experience as I recovered. My room (2 beds, a good bath, a shower, coffee/tea making facilities and a fridge) was extremely comfortable. But the main thing was how incredibly kind every single member of staff was to me. Of course there was room service, etc, but when I called down everyone knew my name, my situation. They would call up to check on me. They advised me on how I could get other services (like paracetamol and Covid tests delivered). Everything is always about people, isn't it... and really I was so grateful for all the care offered to me. Thank you.

No freezer for medications
Reviewed 10 january, 2023
My wife has to travel with some medicines that need to be kept chilled. For any journey, these are carried in a box that is kept cool by two freezer blocks. We have travelled extensively with this arrangement, throughout Europe, to remote areas in Africa, Asia and the Americas. Everywhere, the hotel has been able to provide a freezer to store/re freeze the blocks, for the next leg of our journey. Not apparently, the Munich Marriott. They claim they can’t have contamination in their kitchen freezers (clearly a totally garbage response). But there are two obvious possible solutions to this: either provide a plastic bag so the blocks don’t touch anything else in the freezer or provide a separate “concierge freezer”. Clearly the hotel management just can’t be bothered to provide a service to their clients. I only chose this particular hotel in Munich because I “lived” in it for a year when I was working but never again - I will choose and recommend other hotels in Munich (including Marriott brands).

Not a good choice if you don’t like noise

The hotel has a great lobby and very friendly check in staff. The location is near the subway line but far enough from the town to be quiet. The main issues with the hotel are the horrible thin doors on the bedroom. My room was “upgraded” and large, but across from a utility closet. I could hear everything. When my neighbors got room service, the rattling carts felt like they were inside my room. It was bizarre. I got horrible sleep as a result. Further complicating sleep was the heat would only go from hot to fire hot. They could not address the cooling function, so I had to open a window, right above all the buses and taxis. The shower would fluctuate between hot and cold. It was not a good stay. Only thing I

Complete disaster, booked for my wife, company rate, accepted last 25 years, Apparently not in Munich. Be aware. Watch dogs. I switch my complete corporate booking now from Marriott to Hilton. I had enough.
