Great Stay & Staff!

I loved it here! I came here for work and asked for the 2nd floor so that I wouldn’t hear noise above me. It was great—super quiet and conducive to work. Prior to my stay I spoke several times with Raj (Manager), who is always nice, super helpful, and never rushed--very peaceful person! He takes time to talk with you and give you the information you need. A couple of days into my stay, I dropped my toothbrush on the floor around 6:30 am, so I went downstairs to ask if they had spare toothbrushes. This is when I met Davida at the front desk—what a joyful person to meet before 7:00 am! I had a pink mask on, so Davida came out with a pink toothbrush because she saw that I liked that color. How sweet is that? Meeting and talking with her made my day. I’ve mentioned a couple of people by name, and although I don’t know everyone else's name, each employee that I spoke with by phone or in person was friendly and kind. The rooms are clean and bright. There is a diner right next door. This may sound strange, but I LOVE that they don’t have breakfast. Maybe that is why I didn’t see a single bug! (I always feel sorry for bugs trapped in hotel rooms, especially since you can’t release them outside in the winter.) Also, there is a stunningly beautiful saltwater fish tank with gorgeous fish and an especially friendly puffer fish, who looks like he has teeth and like he is smiling-- SO Adorable! Give everyone here a great big raise. Thank you all!
Truly disappointing not what it used to be.

This place has lost its luster. We used to visit here when our kids were younger, it was a perfect place to venture out to the aquarium and beyond. Now it’s best feature is that it’s adjacent to the diner and if you show your room key you can you get 10% off. The room was marginally clean, dark, stains on rug, heat was hard to figure out, Well the front desk staff was friendly enough, but couldn’t get their act together to get more coffee cups so that complementary morning coffee could be taken. Would not recommend staying here unless there is nowhere else to stay.
Very quiet stay.

Very quiet, in spite of its location by freeways. There are 2 sets of doors to enter the rooms and hallways, which probably helps. Need keycard access so I appreciate the security. Walking distance to Mystik Village (shopping centre) and short driving distance (less than 10 min)/longer walking distance (but still reasonably close enough) to Mystic Seaport Museum and Downtown. Would recommend for a bargain stay.
Do not stay here.

Avoid this hotel at all costs. Besides the fact that it has a weird smell, and the walls are super thin, the management here are absolutely horrendous. I've stayed here once before and for the price, it was okay. So I booked it again. I called the hotel to see if they could accommodate a 2pm check in, and they said they could not accommodate me, unless I wanted to pay a fee. I did not, so I politely told them I had to cancel my reservation and would like my $102 refunded so I could stay somewhere else. Since I booked it through a third party, the manager told me in order to get a refund, I had to call the third party and they would call the hotel to approve it and it would be refunded. The manager Raj (I'm not sure if that's his real name because he was hesitant to tell me) told me he would approve it. I even had him on speaker phone and my friend in the car also heard it. So after being reassured by the manager it was no problem, I felt confident to book another hotel that could accommodate a 2pm check in. I stayed at The Hampton Inn and Suites across the way, and it was perfect. A week later I receive a call from the third party company saying that they tried very hard to get a refund, but the Howard Johnson manager refuses to approve it. Without an approval they can't do anything. I called the hotel, assuming it must be a mistake. Clearly a hotel wouldn't charge me $102 for a room I never even checked in for. The manager Raj picks up, and I explain what happened and he says "Oh that was me. I said no. I never told you I would approve it." It is an absolute lie. Why would I then go and book another hotel if I thought I was going to still be charged for that one? He directly lied to me. He told me he would do something and then he didn't. I tried to explain to him that this wasn't right and he hung up on me. I called back and he hung up again. I myself work in the service industry and have worked at hotels. This is NOT how you treat guests. You don't steal their money. And now this hotel has $102 of mine at a property I never even stepped foot on. Stay away from this hotel. The management are liars and they don't care at all about their guests. There are PLENTY of other hotels in the area that are much better and have integrity. Trust me. This isn't an isolated incident. This is how this place runs. Stay away.

People , People , People . This is what I loved about this place. AL & his team couldn’t have been more friendly. I felt at home. The place is old but well kept. Very clean and functional. The diner next door is an add value too. Location is about 25 minutes walk from DownTown Mystic and maybe 35 minutes to the train station. Bed is supe comfy. So for the money I paid (89$ a night) is a great value. They also know the town very well so they gave me some cool recommendation for dinning. RED36 is a great spot I went there twice for dinner😋
