Beautiful Getaway
One of my absolute favorite resorts! The property is so beautiful. The walk to Boon Fly is short and sweet. The first time I stayed here, the room was a little outdated but when I went recently, the room was much better and cleaner. Maybe because of Covid? They are cottages, so during Covid I felt safe because I wasn't sharing any space with anyone. My favorite part of the resort is the pool. The view is perfect. My husband and I spent 5 hours there and the service is so great. The reason for not giving it 5 stars in my review is because the actual pool is in need of major work. I am talking about the adult pool. There is rust and it isn't very clean. It just needs some extra love, but the view makes it all better. Perfect place for a getaway with your love!
Not COVID Friendly + Wrong Billing
REALLY wanted to give this place a five star just because of how beautiful this place is. However, with all the issues we encountered during and after our stay, I have to give it a 3 star only. 1. HOUSEKEEPING issue: For our 3-night stay, housekeeping left a big bag of dirty/used towels on our porch for two days in a row. the first day we just thought it was just an accident, you know we're all human, so we called the housekeeping to let them know that there's a big bag of dirty towels on our porch and they came to pick it up. BUT, the same thing happened the next day, came back from our morning walk, once again, found the big bag of dirty/used towels on our porch. Not in front of our stairs, not in the front yard, but right in front of our door. I'd think for a luxury hotel, they'd do better than this. Especially, with COVID going on, leaving a bag of dirty towels on guests' porch is just unacceptable. I mean, this should never happen during normal time either. Also, I was very surprised to see that our room service tray/ plates/trash were just left on top of the trash can for the entire day after housekeeping came to clean. 2. Dirty Bike: Rented a bike, and found trash (used water bottle, trash) in the bike bag. Informed the staff, and only got a reply of "would you like a wipe to wipe it down?" 3. Billing: Billed my AMEX a charge for almost $200. Called to find out that they charged me for the "use of mini bar". So I had to explain that we did not use anything from the minibar for the whole entire stay. Funny thing was that, when I asked what minibar items were charged for, the staff told us the drinks in the fridge and a couple of items in the minibar box... turned out those items were never refilled back after the previous guests' stay. We had nothing but a bottle of water in our fridge. So not only did we not get the full complete minibar service. we were also charged for the items that were used by the previous guests. Like I said, I really wanted to give this place a five star, the check-in staff was amazing, the cottage was beautiful, the boon fly cafe was solid 5 stars. BUT, I just can't overlook these issues, especially the time we're living in now, sanitizing, disinfection should be top priorities for hotels.
Disappointing service
Let me start off by saying that the Carneros has long been on my bucket list of luxury resorts in Napa. Perhaps because I had waited so long, my expectations were unreasonably high. My husband and I stayed in September 2020, during the COVID pandemic when outdoor dining was allowed. Our room was pleasant and comfortable, but surprisingly small. Maybe they count the large outdoor patio in the square footage. What was most disappointing and surprising was the incredible lack of service. We spent most of our time at the Hilltop adult pool. On both mornings during our stay, when we arrived in the morning there were no clean pool towels to be found and zero staff to assist. On the second morning, we decided to have breakfast at the Hilltop restaurant and found one lone server trying to seat people, take orders and serve. We ended up seating ourselves and waiting 20 minutes to be acknowledged. When poolside staff did finally arrive, they merely took away the dirty towels that had been piled up from the night before and made no effort to bring clean towels to the guests who were already poolside. We ended up making friends with another couple and sharing tips on how to get served and when fresh towels were available. They also shared their dissatisfaction with the service they had experienced and were planning on checking out a day earlier than planned. This is really ridiculous considering the price point and how many other luxury hotels are competing in this space. We had also stayed at the Solage earlier in the summer and in comparison, our stay at the Solage was much more enjoyable. Staff there was attentive and readily available. We will not be returning to Carneros anytime soon.
Dirty place made us sick
We were booked in a cottage for a week long stay over Christmas. We had extremely severe allergies. My husband and I had watering eyes, postnasal drip, and nonstop sneezing and headaches. We also had a baby staying with us who was having allergies and breaking out. At first the reception suggested we switch out the down feather pillows. But that did not work. I realized the problem when I eventually saw a lot of dust on the vent. The vents looked very old. The shower faucet looked like it is tarnished or rusty. There were cobwebs on the light fixture. A hole in the towel. The toilet paper bar was falling off. When we turned off the heat/thermostat, and the air stopped blowing, the allergies were lessened but still there. We were concerned the cottage has not been cleaned. We also had a baby and needed her things to be clean for feedings since she is so young. (5.5 months old). See pictures attached. This is not to the level we expected for an upscale resort. My husband also has asthma and was having trouble breathing due to the cat dander/dust/lack of cleanliness. With the baby and the husband I was concerned for the safety and health of my family in this cottage. I worry if the vents have not been cleaned since their renovation in 2016. We cut our vacation short (left after 2.5 days instead of staying for all 7 days) because it was so unpleasant and unhealthy there. When we were packing I actually found a thick layer of soot and dust on top of the baby's cereal container and our water jugs. That was really surprising since we had only put those items in the room a couple of days ago. When we left the room and went onto the grounds outdoors, it felt like our headaches, watery eyes, and trouble breathing were magically suddenly lifted away. The resort fee each day was exorbitant compared to the fact that no amenities were open during the napa county order on COVID. We knew that would be possible. So the gym, spa, restaurants etc-- everything -- was all closed. That is understandable. Yet I was very surprised were still charged for very high resort fees. What did we pay those for? Nothing. No amenities, no reason for them. I have traveled overseas and nationwide for many years, and I have never stayed in a hotel (even a Hampton Inn) that made us feel sick from the dust and lack of cleanliness. We were excited to bring our baby to the resort and relax. Unfortunately she was disturbed from the dust and air quality as well. As soon as we came home she was a bubbly and giggling baby again. At Carneros she was unable to sleep, sneezing more than usual, had a runny nose, and had breakouts on her skin. What a terrible thing. The pool and the hot tub also had gobs of brown mud on the bottom of them. The landscaping is pretty outdoors but the appeal of Carneros is very very superficial -- I cannot believe how much they charged us for what this is.
Anniversary getaway
We had a great time at Carneros Resort and Spa. Although we visited right when everything locked down again we had a great time. Definitely recommend Carneros, close to everything. Close enough to Napa and Sonoma but you feel like you're on a far getaway.
