good place, could be better

i would have rather rated this hotel with 3.5 *, but between 3 and 4, i have finally chosen 4*
the hotel is in the suburbs of narbonne. the historical city is reached after a nice - if weather is good - 20 minutes walk along the canal
built with a modern architecture that resects the environment that combines wood and concrete, adjacent to and old mill which is nowadays the hotel restaurant (unfortunately closed on sundays, so i could not visit it)
the room was ample, with a large jacuzzi inside, a small kitchenette with basic kitchen tools, fridge with 2 complimentary bottles of water, microwave and kettle.
the bed was good
the bathroom was well equipped, however amenities were more in line with a 2 stars hotel
the free wifi did not work well
the reception staff was friendly
the breakfast buffet for 15 euros was good, with hot and cold dishes
the fitness area were several machines in a corridor
we did not try the swimming pool (assume it was closed as it was end of october)
pets are accepted for 15 euros a night
there is a convenient underground carpark offered for free
the gardens were very pleasant, however looked sometimes a bit abandoned
unfortunately, the property llacks of charming details and the decoration is a bit impersonal
this could be a more pleasant place if the property took a bit more of care in the details
i would probably use this hotel for a stay of several days in narbonne, but unsure if i would return for a one night

This is an exceptional hotel, of a class seldom seen in France outside of Paris. Large room, large comfortable bed, in room full size jaccuzzi, outstanding breakfast. As importantly, the hotel staff is very sweet, very kind, and more that willing to help and answer any question.
The only slight negative is the location slightly out of the way, still an easy 15 minutes walk to the center of town.
We will return to this hotel anytime we are in the area
Excellent - full of character and great service

Our only regret was that we only stayed one night. My initial impression was gained when I was booking and I was impressed at how helpful and friendly the lady who helped me was. On our arrival that helpfulness continues as we were checked in.
The Ile de Gua Suites has immense character. It is not centrally located in Narbonne but quietly sits beside the attractive Canal de la Robine on an island by a small park. It is a relatively small hotel with well equipped and spacious bedrooms that include a well appointed bathroom, very comfortable bed, a Jacuzzi, a large balcony overlooking the canal and a small kitchenette with microwave. We had no need to use this facility as we ate in their excellent bistro outside overlooking the canal lock at the end of their pleasant garden which features two ducks. The food was great, an interesting selection and at a very reasonable cost. The breakfast was a buffet with again a good selection.
This is a hotel with great character and a helpful and pleasant staff. We would love to stay here again.

I do not recommend this hotel, too far to walk to shops, cafes and any places of interest. No room service so to eat you had to go to their restaurant or order a taxi. Small kitchenette but NO instructions on how to use it and was never told to bring our own food. No instructions on how to use TV and no programme guide. Reception staff not helpful.
