Hotel 50 Bowery is a hidded gem in Chinatown/lower east side NYC

My daughter and I were in town from LA for her skateboarding competition at the LES skate park. We had a wonderful stay! The staff was helpful, kind and incredibly responsive. We love that we could pre-order our breakfast early and have it waiting for us in the morning. On the weekend the staff delivered it to our room. I would highly recommend a stay at this hotel if you plan on visiting The City in the future. It is in Chinatown, and very clise Little Italy and the Canal Street subway station.

Joe's Shanghai was amazing! We ordered Crab Meat with Pork Meat Soup Dumplings, Shanghai Noodle Soup and a bottle of Sake and Chardonnay! I highly recommend Joe’s Shanghai while in Chinatown. Definitely pay them a visit!

Manhattan suite stay for family of 4 with baby/toddler, great for the value

Reviewed 1 july, 2022

I booked the Manhattan Suite because I wanted two rooms since sleep is unpredictable with a 3 year old and 1 year old when it comes to travel. The price for a suite was very reasonable here compared to other NYC prices. Location is pretty good. So much good food in Chinatown! It’s only a few blocks to a bunch of different subway lines. We walked to SoHo and NoHo as well as the Brooklyn Bridge on separate occasions. The suite was great! It was huge even by non-NYC standards, and was spotless (I’m a self-proclaimed clean freak). The bedroom is bigger than the living room. To get an idea of size, checkout the bedroom photo with this review and just look at how much space is left even with an open pack-and-play. The furniture and linens were in great shape. The hotel has a very modern feel but has clean simple decor, which I really appreciated especially because there was nothing my 1 year old could really damage making baby-proofing a cinch. In terms of amenities in the suite that I used, there was a hair dryer, hand-held clothing steamer, mini fridge. The bedroom has an alarm clock radio that I only used for its USB plugs to charge my phone. Both the bedroom and living room have flat screen tvs, which I did not use during the stay. That balcony is gigantic! The last night there I had a few family members who live in Manhattan come over for pizza dinner and they were all impressed with the size of the balcony, which has entrances from both the living room and the bedroom. The balcony had two bench/sofa seats that can sit maybe 3-4 adults comfortably each and a reclining chaise as well as a large round table on a patch of astroturf. You could easily fit 20 adults out there comfortably with room to still walk around. I was a little nervous that a balcony wouldn’t be safe with kids when I first booked the room, but it was perfectly fine as the railing is large glass panels as opposed to something a kid could fall through. My 3 year old loved sitting on the balcony for breakfast as he watched the cars come and go on the Manhattan Bridge. Even my 1 year old enjoyed the view, but from the safety of a pack-and-play inside the room. We used the pull-out couch one night. It was a little weird cause we couldn’t fully open it because the bureau drawers opposite the couch got in the way. We had to actually turn the couch 90 degrees in order to actually open it. Not a huge deal, but it would be more convenient if the sofa bed opened without rearranging furniture. It’s not particularly comfortable being that it’s a pullout couch and is a bit creaky, but it serves its purpose. Sound-proofing in the suite is great. We couldn’t hear hallway noise, important since the suite was right next to elevator, and hopefully no one could hear our noisy toddlers. Even with the huge windows in the rooms and the two balcony doors, the street noise was surprisingly minimal inside the room. We did valet service for our car. I had read some reviews that did not have good things to say about valet, but I didn’t have any problems. They did give us a heads up to call them 20-30 minutes before the car was needed, and the car was always ready within that time frame. We initially were going to self-park but ultimately decided that an extra $20 a day was worth not having to deal with NYC traffic. They have a little shelf off to the side in the lobby for food delivery to drop off orders. We used the hotel’s food delivery once (see their website) for breakfast which seemed pretty reasonably priced. We also did a a lot of UberEats since we weren’t comfortable yet eating at restaurants with two kids still unvaccinated for COVID-19. When food arrived, front desk would call up to ask if we wanted someone to bring it up to the room. During the day, they have water, tea, and coffee available for free on the second floor. I did knock off a star from the rating for a few service lapses. One was that during the initial booking, I had left a note saying a crib was needed. I called the hotel again 3 days before our arrival to make sure they knew we needed a crib and was told by whoever answered the phone that they would make sure there was a note on our reservation. When we arrived, no crib was in the room so I had to call the front desk to ask them to bring up a pack-and-play. Another issue I had was at checkout day. I called down to front desk to let them know we needed valet to retrieve our car, and that we needed help bringing down our luggage. The person who answered confirmed that he would send someone up to help get our luggage. Thirty minutes later, nobody had come up and we could see that our car was parked out front on the curb waiting for us. Meanwhile, we got tired of waiting so my husband went down to grab a luggage cart for us. When he went to get the cart, he was told nobody knew we needed help with luggage (and still nobody came back up with him to assist). Once we got all our luggage loaded up and down to the lobby, we tried to get our car keys, but no one seemed to know who had the keys. First we were told another guy who was retrieving another car had our keys and that we’d have to wait till he got back. Then when that guy got back he didn’t have the keys. We did eventually get our keys, but that was an unnecessarily long time to wait with two small children. I don’t know if they were understaffed, but they maybe need to have better communication between their staff to prevent these issues. The rest of our stay, service was fine otherwise. Overall, I would definitely stay here again and in particular in the Manhattan Suite as it was very much worth the value.

Contemporary and clean

A lovely room with fabulous views of the city. Subway is a 10 minute walk away. No tea or coffee in the room but this is available on the second floor in the ‘living room’ where there is also a microwave. No hotel restaurant but breakfast can be ordered and delivered to the reception area. Room clean and serviced daily. Staff at reception friendly and helpful. We loved our stay here! Recommend wholeheartedly.

Great stay!

Great stay, flight was very delayed so couldn’t check in until 3 AM. Front deskman, Sigfried was very helpful/nice. Room was ready, clean, perfect, spacious, good views too! Location was great, would have been nice to be slightly closer to subway, I would 100% stay here again. Slightly loud Saturday night when trying to sleep due to rooftop bar. Staff very friendly and helpful, excellent stay!
