Wow! This Place is Special.

Stayed in Jan as part of a medical conference. Just me - but I will bring someone with me next time. It's too special not to share. Transportation: Quick $25 Uber from John Wayne airport (great little airport). Walked to / from while on property, but I saw shuttles. Looked like they had a beach shuttle as well. Accommodations: Stayed in bungalow 344 and LOVED it. Fireplace, balcony, easy walk to lobby, pool, etc.. Fun: It's a great place to be alone - or with someone. I walked and enjoyed sunrises and sunsets. When the conference was over, I rented an e-bike and rode for hours - to the beach, historic Crystal Cove, Corona Del Mar, around the amazing ritzy coastal neighborhoods. The pool is spectacular. Food: The food I had at the conference was great - they served all 3 meals and a reception. Weather: The weather was perfect. Short sleeves during the day and a sweater / wrap at night. Service: Perfect. I got early check-in and late check-out. They held my bags while I zoomed around on the bike and watched a final sunset.

Always The Best For A Special Occasion!!!

I am actually reluctant to share how above-and-beyond Pelican Hill is compared to the other 5-star resorts in the area, but must confess… I keep checking out the Montage, Ritz-Carlton and now, the Waldorf-Astoria…Pelican Hill still reigns supreme! Food service is wonderful & varied! Poolside: love the chicken tenders & Berry Collins Coliseum: great salads & pizza Pelican Grill: service at either the bar or patio is my preference…love the short ribs and crab cakes there! Market Caffe…easy for breakfast, lunch, snacks or that bottle of wine for your patio…all reasonably priced. Always have to make sure that we visit for a scoop of pistachio gelato…while enjoying that view!!! Also: don’t miss out on the resort’s stellar room service brought out to your patio…We love to split an omelette or frittata for breakfast…their steak frites (with an added salad is plenty for lunch or a lite dinner) or a charcuterie platter ordered in time to enjoy your sunset viewing. Take the complimentary tram to Crystal Cove and enjoy the infinity pool for an hour or two…or just wander through the main building to view the plein-air paintings and the authentic Italian tapestries (two in the lobby Great Room are museum quality) love the value…that and the ambience supersedes anything else on the coast in Orange County!!! We always do a staycation in October for my birthday, but in 2022, we’re also including an anniversary stay in January…have loved how they’ve handled the pandemic!! Such amazing staff throughout the resort… Danielle DeBeaubien is an AMAZING resource in Guest Services…her outreach is unique in this jaded industry. She remembers returning guests and treats them beautifully! So impressed with this professional, yet friendly and accessible employee…she obviously enjoys her job! “Thank you for your service” has taken on a new meaning these days…please remember to acknowledge the people who are coming to work these days to ensure that you have a great vacation.

STUNNING PROPERTY

WOW. The grounds of this property are amazing. Beautifully landscaped with lemon trees and flowers and botanicals everywhere. We stayed in a villa and it was huge! Loved walking daily through the resort and beyond. Breakfast everyday was excellent. Definitely recommend.

Christmas Escape

Reviewed 29 december, 2021

We spent Christmas Eve and Day at the resort as first time visitors. Splurged a bit on one of the better rooms and were not disappointed. The layout of the resort is somewhat unusual, and almost has the feel of a residential complex, with individual parking spots, winding lanes and sidewalks. Not sure if you call it a room or is it a villa, but being single story, thick walls and private patios with views of the on-site golf course, the ocean and if you are lucky Catalina, we felt very isolated and loved the quiet. Room was in excellent condition and spacious, with a minimalistic design. I’m no interior designer, so not sure what the theme is. I guessed at California coastal with some Scandinavian touches due to the colors and light wood. Great bathroom with double sinks, tub and a large walk-in shower and lots of extra towels. Comfortable bed, but not sure what the lumpy pillows was about… maybe some new fad we are not aware of. We were brought a bottle of Champaign just after arrival. Not sure if everyone gets that or we were “special”! We were not celebrating anything other than getting away for Christmas. We sat on the patio and polished it off that afternoon! The rain put a bit of a damper on things in all honesty. No fault of the resort, but did make it rather a ghost town, which I guess was OK by us, although eating at the Coliseum Pool & Grill restaurant in the evening was rather chilly even indoors due to the large open doors everywhere. In hindsight, it might have been warmer eating outside under a heater. Second night we ate at the Pelican Grill which requires taking the shuttle as it is offsite at the golf course clubhouse. A much nicer (classier?) facility than the Coliseum Pool & Grill which is more utilitarian. Every member of staff we encountered were friendly, courteous and professional, whether we were just passing each other, or they were actually serving us or assisting us in some way. Kudos to them as they worked on Christmas Eve and Day and during all the restrictions we all face at this time. I should add all staff we saw or delt with wore masks without exception. I hope we get the opportunity to return in the new year when the weather is better and maybe some of the COVID restrictions have been lifted so we can relax by the amazing pool with a nice cold cocktail.

Nice but worth the price?!

Reviewed 26 november, 2021

Just spent a week at The Resort at Pelican Hill, for a much anticipated golf holiday with friends. It was our first vacation since the beginning of the pandemic. The resort staff (front desk, waiters, house keepers) were very friendly and the concierge team was exceptionally helpful. Our garden view room was comfortable, but dated and ordinary- not worth the hefty daily price of $1200! The resort is vast and we felt like we were vacationing in the suburbs. We were disappointed to learn, just days before arriving that the main restaurant (Andrea's) was closed for the week, as was the South Golf Course for much of the week. It would have been nice to know this prior to booking. Breakfast service in the hotel restaurant does not open until 8 am which doesn't work for early tee-times or early risers arriving from the East Coast. We used room service for breakfast each day which was adequate. We played The North Course twice and we played the newly aerated South Course once. Both courses are beautiful and challenging. We were disappointed in Oak Creek, a local inland mediocre course. We played at Shady Canyon Golf Club, which was spectacular and my favourite of the week. Our favourite restaurants for dinner were Fable and Spirit, Bluefin Japanese Cuisine and The Farmhouse at Roger's Garden. We loved our delicious lunch overlooking Laguna Beach at Las Brisas. The concierge was very helpful in booking our reservations for us and provided a car service for the closer destinations. We took long walks on the beach and enjoyed watching the surfers. One day we took a rigorous hike in Crystal Cove State Park- it was fabulous! We needed our car to get to all hikes. I am a hiker and I was disappointed that there were absolutely no good walks or hikes at the resort. Overall, a lovely, active week with friends in a beautiful part of California. That all said, this resort wasn't for me- too big, too impersonal, nowhere to walk and not worth the price.
