Friendly staff in ideally located hotel

Reviewed 5 november, 2021

The staff were all lovely and welcoming. However we were sad to find that the pool could only be booked as a half hour slot per room a day. We also found mosaic tiles lifting from the floor of the pool and did report this. My evening meal was lovely, but they ran out of some of the limited menu when we dined and only told us after ordering so my daughter was left disappointed and we decided to go elsewhere during the rest of our stay as we didn't want to have the same situation happen again. The views were obscured from quite a few of the windows in the hotel due to the ivy on the windows and in places beginning to grow in from the windows. The bowling was closed (not mentioned on the website). On a plus side the hotel is close enough to walk into Newquay. We also had a large room with a balcony and the view was amazing. If you are expecting clean carpets and high level of cleanliness then this hotel is not for you. My daughter saw one persons dog make a puddle on the carpet near our room (the owner was cleaning it up with a towel) - I guess if you have a dog friendly hotel you have to expect that kind of thing to happen. Finally please take your receipts with you as information the staff kindly wrote down for me was written on someone else's booking information. Clearly a little worrying for confidentiality purposes. I only noticed this once I had returned home. Would I go back? Well I might, as all things considered it was ideally located and the staff were all lovely and welcoming. You can't blame other peoples dogs on the hotel and the hotel was also good value.

Weekend break

Reviewed 19 october, 2021

Hubby had a business meeting in Newquay and as I had worked in the hotel many years ago I booked the California. I have to say we had a lovely weekend, the staff very friendly. Breakfast was plentiful. Our room was on reception level and had lovely views over the Gannel. It was lovely to visit again and not disappointed.

Cornwall break

We were part of a coach party. First the pros: lovely food at dinner with a choice of three starters, three mains and three sweets and coffee or tea. Breakfast was cereals, fresh fruit salad, yogurt, toast, jams and marmalade and a beautifully cooked breakfast with a choice of up to six items. Tea and coffee. All the meals were a generous size, and it was a struggle to find room for dessert. A lovely large lounge with bar, although a couple of the sofas were uncomfortable. Very friendly staff in the restaurant, reception and bar. A fridge in our room. Lovely white, fluffy towels. Nice views over the hillside. The cons: this hotel is very dated and needs some remedial work. Our twin room was small, but had loads of drawer and cupboard space, and the smallest tv we’ve ever had. The bathroom window had no blind, but fittings for one!!, the grouting around the bath needed redoing, the pipes made a dreadful noise if the hot tap was turned on full (we also heard the noise from adjoins rooms). The toilet paper was the cheapest, nastiest I have ever encountered in a hotel. No mattress toppers. My hubby’s bed was lumpy and bumpy, but they did replace it immediately he complained. One drawer was so ill fitting I couldn’t use the one underneath. This should have been spotted by housekeeping as it was very noticeable. I didn’t mention it while there. Cobwebs around the window in the bedroom, which apart from needing cleaning needed redoing. I never saw a cleaner in the hotel the whole time we were there. You could choose whether to have your room serviced (we did), and towels and the tea tray were replenished as necessary. I would say I think this hotel needed some money spent on updating it, but it’s excellent food is it’s redeeming grace.

Not what everyone would want be we were pleased!!

We stayed at this hotel for a short break in October, paying circa £300 for 4 nights with breakfast included. This was much cheaper than anything else we found. Premier inn in Torquay was £120 per night excluding breakfast. Another hotel priced up at £700… A lot of the negative reviews are an accurate reflection of what the hotel is like. It is, in areas, incredibly dated and in need of investment. The carpets, fixtures and fittings are all way past their best and need replacing. The bowling and snooker rooms are not available and the outdoor pool looks like it’s been out of action for a long time. The car park is small and would be awkward to use when busy. The bed in the room was very soft and pretty small for two people. The shower was impossible to use and was either too cold or scolding hot!! However, despite all of these points we still really enjoyed our stay here. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly. The indoor pool and sauna are decent and worth using if only to get a decent shower. Other facilities such as the squash court and table tennis are in good order. And there is a pool table to use on a pay per game basis. The bar area and the balcony in the room offered stunning views of the estuary and beach, a view that was worth the cost alone. The cooked breakfast was decent, served quickly and fresh to order. With toast, tea, coffee and cereal options: this would cost approx £10 per day per person if sourced at a cafe or restaurant. Our room, although dated, was clean and despite the bed being soft we were able to sleep ok. The location is great with crantock beach and fistral beach both within walking distance. The four star review is based on the location, staff, food and value for money. If you are looking for a luxury hotel and are bothered by issues such as frayed carpets then this is definitely not a hotel you should book. If you’re looking for a cheap place to lay your head whilst exploring the beaches and scenery of Newquay and are happy with a decent breakfast and a place to sleep and a great view then you could do worse than book here.. given the low cost we had pretty realistic expectations and were very happy with what we got. The three star rating officially given to the hotel maybe a tad generous so please be sure of what you are getting when booking here. I can see why people would be negative about the hotel California but we would rebook if the price stays in line with what we paid!

Hotel California

What I liked about this hotel. Friendly staff. Amazing views. 10 mins walk to Crantock beach. Nice pool and sauna. Some beautiful original features i.e. stained glass window and vintage fire places, large lounge area, good size bedroom (room 7) dog friendly, pool table. Basic breakfast but well cooked. Competitive rates. This hotel is dated needs new carpets or flooring throughout. Bedroom chair had rip in it. Bathroom was basic but clean. I paid £90 per night so felt was value for money. If this hotel is upgraded, with the amazing views you will be paying £200 a night like many in that area. Room for improvement for sure but does not deserve some of the terrible reviews on here. The view alone was worth the stay.
