The Dolphin is an old-style 50's era motel in that all the rooms are ground level and accessible from the street. Having said this, it has been updated extensively and is a top-notch place to stay in Paihia. Its location to the wharf (and bus stop) is within easy walking distance. The Countdown grocery store is even closer. On a clear night I also think it would be a good place for stargazing. As for the room, ours was spacious, clean, modern, quiet and very functional. The bed was comfortable. We had no complaints at all with Dolphin and would recommend it for a stay in Paihia.

BE AWARE IF YOU HAVE SPECIAL CONDITIONS DON"T BOOK THROUGH BOOKING.COM. I booked more than 6 months in advance, asking for a bottom floor as my elderly mother (who needs a knee replacement) can't get up stairs. I get to hotel to find out we are on top floor up steep stairs. I speak to Asian man at reception who tells me no English (Hmmm I thought I was in NZ?), I demand to speak to someone, he calls manager, I explain situation - she asks did I use booking.com or expendia I said "yes", she said oh nothing much can be done unless you use our own website as those companies don't know the configuration of the motel. Lucky for us a beautiful lady and her granddaughter overheard all this and offered to swap - as the motel was not going to assist in any way. ANYWAY, it only gets better ..... be aware the rooms look NOTHING like the pictures. Plug points don't work, shower head won't stay up so you need to hold it - oh and it's a shower curtain situation YUK! There is an air con unit looks like from the 1980's and that does not work. I could say more but you get the general warning. I don't like to give this type of feedback in these tough times but $700 (hard earned $$) for 3 nights, I would expect more and not assisting us with our request because we used another agency that "you advertise on" - is very unfair ...... thank goodness for kind soles who overheard this, as Mum would have never got up the stairs. Disappointed. *The cleaning staff are absolutely lovely ladies, very accommodating and friendly - hard to clean when the place is this rundown. To be fair there is a new section to this hotel - this review is for the grey part of the hotel shown in the pictures. *Wish I took pictures of this room :(

Not up to the standard we expect for $150 per night

We booked for 3 nights and were disturbed to find that there was no one in reception to greet us and give us the key. Just a note on the door to say where our unit was. It was open and the key on the bench. We noted that the couple in the unit next to us were moved to a new unit , not sure why. The cleanliness of this unit in the bathroom was not good. Mould on the ceiling and behind the toilet. This area had not been cleaned for a while as there was other items that should have been cleaned in a daily routine. There were mould spots in the shower as well. My wife noted that there were no cereal plates. Also a light out in the bathroom. In the morning I cooked my eggs in the frypan but then found out there was no egg slice to get them out of the pan. Then when I went to sit down at the breakfast bar the stools were broken, one at a very low level and one stuck too high. We approached the lady in the reception then and she delivered 2 cereal plates for us. No egg slice was available and no one fixed the bathroom light while we were there. She bought another bar stool for us but the rust on the bottom showed the extent that the management has allowed this place to deteriorate too. Not the standard I expect for $150 per night. Also there was an All Blacks test on and the units do not have SKY TV.

Our unit was very run down. Would never stay again!

This was the worst accommodation we have ever stayed in! Receptionist was friendly enough but our unit was so run down and not worth $215 for the night. We paid just a little more to stay at Sky City a couple of nights before. It was a 2 bedroom bit only had a small 2 seater couch which was badly placed to watch tv. Also only 3 seats at dining table for a place that sleeps 4 people. Unit had black mould in bedroom and bathroom. Ants running around in bathroom and kitchen. Feature wallpaper in master bedroom wasn't even centered. 2 seater was patched up. No aircon. Wasn't that clean with spider webs etc. Location was only thing going for it. Wouldn't stay again. No idea how it got to be 4 star! Maybe the newer rooms bring it up to that grading.

Very Poor and Disappointing Experience

We visited Dolphin last week for 4 days. This was our go to until this time as I lost all respect for Dolphin Administration. The whole 4 days we had no cleaning done, no towels washed, no bin liners provided neither had extra toilet rolls. Office closed at 1330 and after hours number wasn't responding to calls or texts. It was either making most of Bay of Islands or be in Paihia to sort these issues and we decided to make the most of the beautiful Northland. When complained on last day giving back keys the receptionist apologized and said that is all she could do. When complained tgrough expedia..th hotel denied any responsibility and claimed they peovided top service. Dishonest and rediculous Dolphin.. You can't make up for lovkdown like this....... I wpuld never come back...
