BUYER BEWARE: Substandard COVID Cancellation Policy
Reviewed 27 november, 2021
Executive Summary: The hotel refused to grant a refund for a cancellation I requested after the Bavarian government issued extreme COVID measures due to soaring COVID infection rates. Unlike almost all hotels in the area, they do not allow full refunds less than 14 days from the reservation. During the COVID pandemic, airlines, hotels and other businesses have loosened cancellation policies to lure back customers. During my research for a trip to the Christmas Markets in Germany and France this year, I looked at literally dozens of possible hotels and BnB's. Almost without exception, the hotels all allowed cancellation within a few days of the reservation, most allowing cancellation the day prior or even day of the reservation. We made a reservation for 4 days at Melter Hotel and Apartments at $245/night. This rate is about twice their normal rate, because it was during the popular Christmas Market period. On Friday, 19 Nov 21 (10 days before my reservation), the Bavarian (Germany) state imposed a policy cancelling all Christmas Markets this year due to soaring COVID infection rates. The order also including a provision that in any district with an infection rate more than 1000/100,000, bars, clubs and restaurants, as well as cultural and sport venues will be closed. Given that we had planned to visit markets in 6 Bavarian towns, and the very real possibility that there could be a total lockdown and also concerns about the new Omicron variant, we had no choice but to cancel our trip. When I attempted to cancel our reservation, I discovered that Melter Hotel and Apartments' full cancellation window was 14 days, after which there was a 90% penalty for cancellation. Given the extreme measures taken by the Bavarian government and the fact that the cancellation was for reasons beyond our control, I requested an exception to their cancellation policy. They refused. They did offer an option to reschedule the reservation, but it had to be before 31 May 22 a time when our reservation was worth less than half of what I paid. Since we had no plans to visit Nuremberg until the Christmas markets next year, I requested the reservation be rescheduled for the same time next year. They again refused and withdrew their offer to reschedule our reservation. While their intransigence and refusal to cancel was technically in accordance their cancellation policy, given that our cancellation was 10 days before the reservation and due to extreme actions by Bavaria, I feel their refusal to offer a full refund was unreasonable. In any case, there are many hotels in the area that offer much more flexibility for cancellation in this dynamic COVID pandemic, so I wanted people to know and not make the same mistake I did.

Check-in was super quick and the guy checking us in had every little detail covered. Rooms where great and so was breakfast. My new favourite hotel in Nürnberg in the most central location but without the noise of Tourists. Great place!
Great location - good place to stay

Situated right in the heart of the old town - easy arrangement to park your car near by. Rooms are well designed, clean and functional - particularly like the walk in shower. Housekeeping were excellent as were the front office staff. There is only one washing machine and drier on level one for guests to use but it seems the hotel use it as well for curtains! However they kindly put our wash in after their curtains were finished. Please look to upgrade or change your pillows regularly- I did ask but was told no others available. We chose not to include breakfast in the room rate and either ate at one of the many cafe close by or in our room as it had the appropriate facilities.

Very nice hotel on the city center. The staff were top. The location was just perfect, near by subway station. 1 minute walk. Next time I will be at the same hotel. The breakfast wasn’t so good. There wasn’t many things to eat.
Will stay again

Great location given the Nuremberg city center is pretty much closed for the cars. Walking distance to everything including a parking garage that the hotel has an agreement with which will allow you to save a little :) Hardly 5 minutes walk away and very clear directions. Friendly staff at the reception. Well sized room with a coffee machine and some plates and utensils. Kinda lack of storage space but not a problem for us since we only stayed one night (we had the smallest studio room). Very quiet and good window blinds which provided us with a perfect sleep. Will make sure to stay here again if we ever come to Nuremberg which turned out to be a charming city, much more than we expected.
