Hotel Pousada do Arcanjo was built following the 4 star Embratur standard. With its unique style, richness of detail, warm ambiance, refined decoration and historic theme, the Archangel embodies the concept of boutique hotel. From arrival, the visitor realizes that he has discovered a different place. For starters, it is greeted by a character dressed as in the eighteenth century. At night, he is surprised by the flames of a torch, as in Vila Rica from colonial times. Upon entering, all the little details that make the difference between a commonplace and a unique experience. Excellent room, excellent service, free shuttle to center, beautiful garden patio to have your tea, free parking, old world charm. It was quite disorganized however in terms of meeting special dietary needs, with many broken promises of serving gluten free bread or pastry “tomorrow”, which never materialized. Would have been much better to say that they could not accommodate that request.

Comfortable but problematic

I am sorry that I cannot give the Arcanjo more than an average rating. I stayed here for 2 nights at R$650 all in incl breakfast, a very reasonable rate. The room was spacious and comfortable (allegedly an upgrade to a triple with a lovely view) as was the inn as a whole, full of old world charm and homely furniture enough to turn anyone instantly into a minimalist. The staff were also very kind and helpful, especially Eduardo. The downsides were: 1. Don't use GPS. Ask the hotel for directions before you travel. For some reason very few of the hotels in Brazil send out this information upon reservation - which they should. 2. The shuttle service did not materialise when we needed it on a cold night back to the hotel. Some confusion and delay. The walk to town is not pleasant and on the return leg extremely steep. We didn't bother to try this service again. Taxis are R$20 one way. 3. The breakfast (we abandoned the second one) was the worst I've had in Brazil so far. Tasteless and boring. A vast selection of dreadful pastries and bland scrambled eggs, amongst other untemarkable fare. 4. We had dinner at the hotel one evening to avoid the trek into town. Mediocre all round and severely overpriced at R$172 for 2 persons. Bad wine served out of a box, to boot. 5. I used the laundry service and was charged a truly exorbitant R$319 for about 15 simple items, T-shirts mostly. 6. Check out at 6.30 am was a prolonged pain in the neck, despite the kindness of the staff. When guests in restaurants and hotels want to leave, they want to leave quickly and painlessly to get on with their journey. This was not understood. So, all in all, while the hotel itself is comfortable and good value, our stay was somewhat overshadowed by these drawbacks.

Nice hotel, and practical shuttle to the center

Very nice hotel, very spacious room (we had room 303) with tasty decoration, and practical furniture (long rack to put your suitcases for instance) - very good bedding. Very helpful staff and the shuttle bringing you back and forth to the center of Ouro Preto is definitely something valuable (even if you have a car; you can safely leave it in the private parking of the hotel, and use the shuttle up to 10 pm). Noise isolation between room and corridor could be improved. Good breakfasts with a lot of choices.

More than just charm

We recently stayed at Posada do Arcanjo and benefited from the most exceptional help from them when our hire car malfunctioned. Two hours of translation from Portughese to English later, Ariadne was still smiling and offering us a drink to keep us from meltdown! We cannot thank her enough for her help in making the rest of our stay comfortable, The pousada is on the outskirts of town but the shuttle bus system worked well and those who want to walk uphill back always can. We only had breakfast but that was as ever in Brazil, all we could have wanted. Our room was quiet and charming and we would certainly stay there again if in the area.

Exceptionally goodhearted service and a charmingly old world vibe.

Little things count for a lot and Hotel Pousada Arcanjo provides many small but considerate grace notes: a basket of useful items in the bathroom (including a handkerchief!), a sunflower made from a lime to decorate your caipirinha on the patio, afternoon tea replete with local cookies, lots of pillows, a weirdly hypnotic ballet playing on the big screen behind the bar, and a shuttle to the bustling city square that seemed to always be immediately available. Ever so slightly off the beaten track (though walkable to the site seeing center), Arcanjo seemed to work a little harder to be wonderful, and succeeded.
