Inferior superior room

Reviewed 17 may, 2022

Hello, Unfortunately, we found our stay fell short on many counts considering the cost of the rooms. On arrival I was disheartened by the position of the superior room on the ground floor. (Room 1) The room was very dark and warm and being on the ground floor meant the windows would only open slightly. The drapes were dirty and well worn. The lounge area was little more than a corridor and the only toiletries was a small bottle of body lotion. There was no hand soap. After asking for more toiletries still no soap. I really wanted a larger room to meet with my son and his girlfriend in a lounge area so we could celebrate his graduation weekend with the Prosecco which came with the deal. We had to ask twice for some glasses. On the Saturday morning we were woken by heavy footfall outside our room as the headboard actually backs onto the entrance corridor. On the Sunday morning this seemed worse and about 6 am either the hotel or another establishment decided to empty glasses into a bin which went on for at least 10 mins. On leaving I told the receptionist I was disappointed with the superior room because of the noise but she replied that it was the only room that could plumb a huge bath! Shame that you think this is a quality you think is needed for a superior room as the bath isn't very practical taking too much water and is so deep that there is nowhere to reach toiletries - if you had them! The only positives from our stay was the location as we managed to have a fabulous day for my son's graduation without travelling from the outskirts as we have done in the past. On those occasions we stayed in a well known chain which in comparison offered excellent value for money with spacious, bright and airy rooms. I appreciate the Vanbrugh is an old historic building but I feel that Room 1 shouldn't be a bedroom at all. I was asked for a review by email and I sent one to the hotel directly two days ago but as yet I have had no reply. On further investigation into past reviews I notice that Room 1 has been singled out as being noisy. Maybe it is time to change this room from a bedroom to a service room or a breakfast room.

Wasn’t worth the money

Booked a deluxe room for £323 a night as it was for a anniversary break away, the room wasn’t anything special, the carpet was very worn and the room wasn’t very clean. Had breakfast to the room for 2 there was only one plate we had to share. Curtain in the room where very dirty and the noise until 3.30am was awful. Definitely want go back best part of the room was the bath. Beds where like sleeping on the floor.

Very disappointing!

The only good thing about this hotel is it's location. The room that we stayed in seems to require a facelift. The bathroom it tiny. There hot water could not be regulated and the night manager was unable to fix it, so we could not take a shower. The shower door was hanging off the rails, so I had to fix it myself, but since we could not shower that was a mute point anyway. The breakfast is mediocre at best. The night manager told us that in the morning we should expect a refund since the sower did not work, but the morning stuff refused to give us a refund or to discuss the matter further.

A cosy, charming stay in the heart of Oxford!

One of the best things about this hotel is its perfect location! It's right in the centre and made for the perfect base to explore Oxford. The room was cute and cosy, with a huge, comfortable bed. The bathroom was nice and clean. One of the loveliest things about my stay was the breakfast hamper (If it's not raining, I recommend enjoying it outside) and they accommodate a vegan diet! Overall, I loved my stay and would come again!

Disappointing

Reviewed 4 march, 2022

I booked this hotel a long way in advance of our trip and from the website and other reviews, I was really looking forward to our stay to celebrate my husbands birthday weekend. I paid well over £200 for a standard room which seemed like quite a lot for a hotel that doesn't appear to have many facilities but we chose it for its great location in the centre of Oxford. The hotel is easy to find and the location is absolutely excellent. However, the interiors are looking a little tired and the room we were allocated, on the ground floor, was extremely small. I don't mind a small room that's well thought out but a large chunk of it was taken up with the most enormous TV on an even bigger, and apparently redundant, cabinet at the end of the bed. Given how small the room was it would have been far better to have a smaller, wall mounted TV and do away with the cabinet to replace it with somewhere to put luggage, Our case had to live on the floor which, given the lack of space, wasn't ideal. It was lovely to have a coffee machine in the room but difficult to use when the mugs provided were so huge the didn't fit under the spout. It's the details that make the difference and don't need to cost much, just some thought. The bathroom was clean with a great shower but again, not a well thought out space. The hotel has absolutely no sound proofing either and so we had a pretty bad nights' sleep, as we could hear every word spoken and every floorboard trod upon in the rooms around and above us. Finally, you'd think for £200++ that breakfast might be included. You'd be wrong. I think if the pricing was adjusted downwards, this would manage guests expectations better.
