Very good Marriott property in Downtown Pittsburgh

Reviewed 10 september, 2021

I stay here for two nights in early September. Room 705. When checking in, it's good to know that you may pull up in front and park in an area marked by white diagonal lines. This is for checking in, unloading and loading only. Parking is $24/day off site two blocks away (with in and out privileges). Large two-story atrium with TV, seating, a mini market and a glass enclosed conference room at one end. Friendly, helpful staff. Socially distance markings on the floor and large pump hand sanitizers available. Two luggage carts with triangular bases are available in this area. Breakfast was provided as takeaway: yogurt, breakfast sandwich to microwave, fruit cup, and orange juice or water. The room is an accessible room which I requested as (when available) I prefer the walk in shower and raised toilet. Room was very comfortable and (mostly) very clean.* Closet with iron and board, microwave, small fridge, one-cup coffee maker. Desk area. Plenty of towels, very comfortable bed and pillows. Plenty of good lighting as well. *Regarding cleanliness: I discovered when looking for the TV remote, that the area behind the console under the TV had not been cleaned in some time. Though this was a bit of a shocking discovery, the district manager happened to be on-site that day and handled the situation purposefully and properly. This situation aside, I believe this was an anomaly as the rest of the room and the property in general was clean and well kept elsewhere. I would definitely stay here again. The hotel is one of the more reasonably priced in the downtown area and is close in and a very walkable area.

Great facilities and friendly staff

Reviewed 30 august, 2021

My experiences at this hotel were excellent from beginning to end. I was overall very impressed with the staff's friendliness and how accommodating they were for our stay. I was traveling to Pittsburgh from Columbus, Ohio due to my father who suffered an accident and was in a hospital in Pittsburgh. My mother and I had 2 separate rooms and they were able to accommodate her request for a room with handicapped accessibility since she also has mobility issues. When entering the hotel, one is greeted by a very clean lobby with friendly staff to assist you. The rooms had some nice features which are helpful for those who frequent hotels. First, the television had a wide variety of channels including an easy ability to access HBO GO and Netflix. There was an on-screen guide that showed each channel and what shows were airing. Each room also had a microwave and mini-refrigerator that could be utilized by those staying at the hotel. The bed was comfortable but the mattress and pillows were very soft. I personally prefer a more firm mattress, but in no way was the mattress uncomfortable. The bathroom had a large vanity shelf to place your items on. It was stocked with Paul Mitchell soap and shampoo and also contained a full 1875W hairdryer. So often hairdryers in hotels are small and not very powerful. There were 2 shelves on the shower wall to hold your soap, shampoo, or the use of the lower one for your foot. The internet within the rooms was easy to access and there was a strong signal throughout the hotel. They have Wi-Fi amplifiers in each room which helps ensure a very strong signal. I obtained a download and upload speed of 10 Mb/s. Although this is adequate for simple tasks on the internet, personally I think hotels should offer at least 30 Mb/s as their minimum. This is especially true since many homes come standard with 100 Mb/s. The hotel is very close to many downtown attractions. It is only 1 to 2 minutes off of 376 which is the main thoroughfare through Pittsburgh. There is no restaurant or bar in the hotel but there are many restaurants in the area. Ufnortunately, many of the close ones close around 5 or 6 pm. The only ones that were within walking distance and open past 6 PM were Chinatown Inn and Fiesta Pizza. Both are within a 2 block walk from the hotel and serve good food. There was also a 24 hr convenience store located 2 blocks away. Check-in at the hotel requires you to pull off the main part of Fort Pitt Boulevard into what appears to be a fire lane in front of the hotel. It is marked up with white lines so at first glance you would assume that you're not allowed to park there. It is the only place to load and unload as the adjacent lot is permit parking only and they strictly enforce this rule. I saw several cars towed from the lot who did not have the permit on their car. Many will load and unload there but I used the front entrance pull off after calling the hotel. This is something I think they should advertise more on their website and with the email with your confirmation. Like many downtown hotels, there is very little space for loading and unloading and is something common in downtown Pittsburgh. Parking is the usual fee for any hotel in a downtown major metropolitan city. It was $24 per night with unlimited in and out privileges. The parking garage is 1 1/2 to 2 blocks away and it took me about 5 minutes to walk even though I am an overweight over 50-year-old individual. You can cut through an alley adjacent to the hotel to get to the parking garage. I did not feel unsafe but there are some always questionable characters in any downtown major city. I did not feel threatened or afraid but then again I am over 6 foot tall and a big gentleman and often I am carrying anyhow. The only thing I would criticize was the luggage carts used to transport your luggage. It has a handle with a triangle base with a hook on the top to hang clothes. I would have much rather used the traditional-looking transport that has a square base and a bar running across the top to hang all your clothes. Overall a very quality hotel for a reasonable price in downtown Pittsburgh that is close to most major attractions and has easy access to the freeway. It is a part of the Marriott group.

Nice hotel, but doesn't live up to expectations

Reviewed 27 august, 2021

The hotel is clean, well taken care of, and overall a fine place to stay. Staff was (mostly) friendly, polite, and courteous. Location is a bit off the beaten path, but close enough to the beaten path to be convenient. There is an outdoor patio on the mezzanine floor that is pretty great in the evening. Nice view of the inclines and Mount Washington. That said, there were some deficiencies. The biggest being breakfast. Fairfields usually offer breakfast, and it's usually pretty good. And it's convenient to be able to get a decent breakfast right in the hotel without having to go searching. This one offered only a "grab and go" breakfast, which consisted only of a microwaved Jimmy Dean sausage, egg and cheese biscuit. That's it. Nothing else, no other options. And at least on a weekend, anyplace you could get something else in this part of downtown PIttsburgh is not obvious. No coffee, except that there is a coffee maker in your room with two pods to make coffee. My wife drinks tea in the morning. No tea. Even allowing for "grab and go" due to covid, the breakfast offered is inadequate. Lots of people drink coffee or tea in the morning and lots of people don't eat microwaved cholesterol bombs for breakfast. But that's the only option. Granola bars and hot coffee/tea/water urns would not be any riskier covid-wise than going to the front desk for your Jimmy Dean. I personally appreciate extra care being taken for covid, but if you are being so incredibly careful about covid that you can't put out hot beverages or a decent breakfast option, MAYBE YOUR CLEANING STAFF SHOULDN'T BE WALKING AROUND THE HALLS UNMASKED. To be clear, most of the staff were wearing masks, but there were two cleaning staff members that we encountered who were blatantly not wearing masks. I don't think masks are really necessary if they are vaccinated, but if guests can risk unmasked staff, I think we can risk some hot water and a tea bag in a central location. Maybe even a granola bar.

OK hotel, but Incompetent Staff

Reviewed 22 august, 2021

My wife and I stayed here for one night, while dropping our child off at college (CMU). There's no place to pull your car up, so we had to search for street parking and ended up about 3 blocks away - not too bad, especially since we arrived Saturday evening and the next day was Sunday, so it was free. That said, this being downtown, is not the nicest area to be in on the weekend - very deserted and a little seedy. When we entered the hotel there was nobody at reception and nobody showed up for well over 10 minutes. When the woman finally arrived and we politely told her how long we'd been waiting, she just nonchalantly told us she was upstairs doing something else - no apology or even an acknowledgement that shouldn't have happened. I must say I actually found the decor of the hotel - the hallways and rooms - to be quite nice. The bathroom, especially, was very spacious, modern, and chic. The furnishings of the room, however, seemed cheaper than other Marriotts we've stayed at. In particular, the mattresses seemed thin and skimpy, like ones they'd have at a motor lodge. About an hour after we settled in, my wife called the front desk to ask for an extra blanket. The woman who answered seemed confused and annoyed by this request. She told my wife they "don't do that here" and that they don't have any more blankets anyway. The next morning we discovered there was no hair dryer in our room, So, my wife, again, called the front desk. Again, the woman who picked up seemed annoyed. She told my wife she was too busy setting up breakfasts in the lobby and there was nothing she can do. This hotel is, obviously, grossly understaffed, leaving the reception responsible for way more tasks than they should be. We are very empathetic to them being unfairly overworked and overburdened, However, there's still a professionalism that should be exhibited at all times. A simple, "I'm sorry" goes a long way. We're sorry we chose to stay here and will not be back.

Pleasant stay with the right expectations going in....

My family and I just stayed at the Fairfield Inn for 6 nights. The hotel was OK. Other reviews are accurate about lack of amenities - breakfast, coffee, room cleaning, poor (unsafe) parking location, etc. A huge bright star to our stay was Christina at the front desk. She made sure our room was extra clean upon arrival - as I called that I and my kids have pet allergies. She gave great advice on sight seeing (without being asked) and offered water upon return from a long run. As an Marriott Ambassador member who has stayed hundreds of nights at various Marriott hotels, Christina is one of the best Marriott employees I've come across. It's amazing how someone who is super helpful and friendly can change the whole complexion of your stay.
