Basic good room. Delicious dinner

I am walking the Via Francigena and not looking for fancy accommodation. My room at Hotel Le Morteau has all I need. Clean. Comfortable bed. Good shower. I ate in the restaurant and had the most fabulous dinner. Potato gratin for starters (much fancier name in French) and lamb shank for dinner. The waitress matched the food with a wonderful local wine. The restaurant has about 20 tables and most were occupied. Given quality of food and price, I am not surprised. The waitress is terrific. Speaks some English and running the restaurant, bar and hotel single handed. After a long day walking, I will go to bed well satiated on delicious food.

Amusing start, as I arrived when reception was still closed and rang the telephone number on the door, only for the door to be opened and there was the person I was speaking to on the phone. Nice sized room, and a very nice restaurant. Meal was excellent, as was the Arbois red wine that I had with it. Good selection at breakfast in the morning. No problem storing the bike overnight.
Biker friendly stopover hotel

This was a great choice for me and my friend, as a one night stop over on a recent 5 day tour of France. Good sized & clean room, plenty of hanging space, short walk to all the bars & restaurants, buffet breakfast, but no air con on an INCREDIBLY hot night! bike parking was outside next to the hotel, by the cars, but was safe enough (one of the night staff parked his Hog there). Would use this again & would recommend to any bikers- the road up to it through the valleys is simply breathtaking!
ok rooms and close to town centre

Rooms were okay - on the second floor. Clean and tidy. We didn't have the same problems as some of the other reviews - although the wifi didn't work. Very close to town centre which was a lovely area. Breakfast was ok, we didn't eat there in the evening - so can't comment on the restaurant. Hotel is ok for a short visit.

I need to split this review into two parts. First the hotel:- We booked a double and a twin but were given two doubles. Luckily the youngsters didn't mind sharing. The decor was awful, very old and tatty, the bedroom doors were so heavy that anyone elderly or infirm would have trouble opening them and the stair bannister was rickety! The wifi didn't work. The young man on reception appeared to be running the place on his own and also appeared as the waiter in the evening. The restaurant:- What a contrast with the hotel. The food was excellent - not what we expected. Very tasty and well presented. The problem was the service. The young man from reception was the only person we saw - I don't THINK he was the chef too - and it took 55 minutes for the first course to arrive. We would have loved to try the desserts but suspected if we did we might still be there at midnight! The impression we got was that the owners were building up the restaurant side of the business and neglecting the hotel. It would be interesting to go back in the future to see if it had improved - but I don't think I would risk it. Would definitely return to the restaurant though, as long as I had plenty of time to spare!
