Accused of Stealing Egg Sandwich from Complimentary Breakfast Cart

Reviewed 16 september, 2022

Manager Throws Caregiver of Medical Patient out of Hotel Dining Room for Allegedly Stealing an Egg Sandwich From Complimentary Breakfast Station My husband and I stayed at the Clarion Hotel in Portland, Maine in late August so that he could have a medical procedure at Maine Medical Center. He was to recuperate on the evening after the procedure and drive home the next morning. My husband is a 75 year old disabled veteran and I am his 67 year old caregiver. We stayed at this hotel because his doctor’s office offered a discount for medical stays at this hospital. We are both well educated professional people. We understand the challenges facing the hotel industry right now – but we will NEVER stay in this hotel again under any circumstances. During our stay little to nothing was done to help us, I saw only 2 hotel employees wearing name tags. As caregiver, I was in charge of navigating our experience. I was ignored, misinformed, yelled at, bullied, almost run over in the hall when I was pushing a loaded luggage cart, promised shuttle service to the hospital only to find that the driver was not on site when we scheduled the ride, the room frig didn’t work when we got there, we asked for a shower seat and did not get it when we needed it, etc. To top it off, I was accused of stealing an egg sandwich from the complimentary cart (they give you one ticket for two people and refuse to explain how a caregiver can bring the allotted food to the hotel room for someone recovering from surgery). I finally lost my temper and called the server who accused me of stealing, a name that I can’t print here. I was subsequently thrown out of the dining room by the server, screamed at loudly by an unidentified manager in the lobby and told that I was now a person of “no credibility at this hotel”. I could go on. There were a few nice people there but I don’t know who they were as they had no name tags. I don’t expect anything but corporate-speak from Clarion executives but if someone really wanted to listen I can give a blow by blow account of all the problems we faced there.

Never Book at this hotel

1. It took over an hour after we arrived at 3pm to get our reserved room. 2. Room didn’t have a hair dryer. 3. The rubber bath mat was black with mold on the bottom side. 4. The tub was dirty.h 5. No Kleenex in the room and I’m still waiting for staff to bring some to the room. 6. Hotel is in desperate need of a complete internal remodel. 7. The halls and my room have a foul odor. The temperature in the room was set on 60 so as to mask all the nasty odors. 8. Someone must be getting rich on rentals since they are totally booked, no competent staff, and they charge premium prices for this dump!

Tired and overpriced

Reviewed 4 august, 2022

For no reason I can figure out Portland is an extremely overpriced city when it comes to hotels. I paid less for better hotels in both Boston and New York. I chose the Clarion mostly because I came to Maine on Amtrak, and the Clarion was a very short walk from the train station. It would also be convenient for those arriving by bus, and I believe they have a shuttle to the airport. They seem to mostly cater to patients at nearby medical facilities and their families. I arrived around noon. Apparently no room was available at that point, but the clerk did allow me to leave a bag while I went out exploring the city. When I returned around 7pm, the clerks on that shift seemed friendly, but much less efficient than the day clerk had been. They spent nearly ten minutes confirming that the information on my reservation was correct, even clarifying that the address on my driver's license was correct. (First, why should they care? and second, it's the exact same address that was printed on my reservation from Choice Hotels; I'd think they could just compare the two without making a big deal about it.) Once they had gone through the paperwork, there was another delay before one of them could get my bag from the storage room. They seemed to find it strange that I'd left a bag, though that's pretty typical at most airport hotels where people arrive and leave at unusual hours. The hotel had one very slow elevator. When I got to my floor, the carpets in both the hallway and the room seemed well worn. There was nothing really wrong with the room itself, but there were lots of bumps and scratches on the furnishings and the bulbs in two of the lamps didn't work--not really what you expect in a room that goes for $200+ a night. Like most "better" hotels, you have to pay for breakfast rather than getting it free. The only options seemed extremely overpriced, so instead of dining at the hotel I made my way to a nearby doughnut shop. I dealt with yet another clerk at check-out. She was friendly and efficient. I doubt I'll be returning to Portland. If I do I'll most likely look elsewhere for a place to stay. It just didn't seem like the Clarion was worth the absurdly high prices they were charging.

Best deal

I stayed at Clarion for 6months while working in Portland. The staff was always so friendly and helpful. They were there to answer any questions. Housekeeping was available for any needs as well as the dining area. Clean room, comfortable bed with sitting area. The hotel shuttle was remarkable as staff made sure everyone got to their destination in a timely manner. Very reliable. I truly can't say enough as to how comfortable they all made my stay. Thank you to all the staff at Clarion Portland Maine.

Easy access off I-295. Six story hotel, our room was on the sixth floor. Construction was going on in the unloading zone, at the entrance, both when we arrived and departed. There were no ramps up to the sidewalk, so accessibility was an issue. The lobby area was clean, nice, and spacious. Our check in was fairly quick, only having to wait behind one other guest. The clerk checking us in was very nice and helpful. Our room was of ample size, with a king bed. The bed was comfortable and I slept well. The heating/air conditioner was an issue. Either too warm or too cold. When the air came on, you shivered, and shortly after the air went off, you were too warm. The unit was also a little louder than expected. Amenities in the room consisted of a large screen tv, desk, refrigerator, microwave, 2 drawers available in the TV/refrigerator/microwave cabinet, coffee maker, doorless closet, ironing board & iron, and an upholstered chair. Surprisingly, there were no USB ports. There also wasn't a hotel information booklet. The bathroom was small, one person at a time. At 7:20 a m., it took about 2 minutes for hot water to arrive, after turning on the faucet. But, there was ample hot water during my shower. A hair dryer is also provided. The ice dispenser on my floor was missing the dispenser button. The floor below did have a functional ice dispenser. The restaurant had a limited selection for breakfast. So, I assume they were having trouble obtaining an adequate staffing level, like every other workplace. I did feel the prices were rather high (over $10.00 for an egg & cheese sandwich). Overall, I would stay here again, if the price was right. Conveniently located, gas station right in front, Tony's Donuts right across Congress St.
