Seriously overpriced!

Reviewed 21 september, 2022

The hotel is in a great location (though construction across the street began at 7am). There are many restaurants within walking distance. The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was wonderful as was the shower. Breakfast was included in our stay but the restaurant was closed and the offerings at the coffee bar were very limited and unappetizing. We paid for breakfast across at a business across the street. We would not return. Definitely not a $500 per night experience!

Amazing stay

Reviewed 7 september, 2022

This an amazing hotel. Location is perfect - 10 min walk to the piers with boutique shops, bars, coffee bars, and delicious restaurants along the walk. The area is safe and quiet, except for the firehouse next door. We are not sensitive to the occasional siren, but if you are, you may want to ask for the room that does not face that direction. The hotel has many amenities, including a complimentary car/shuttle to and from a place of your choice within about a 1 mile radius from the hotel, which you can arrange with the front desk or the valet attendants. You may have to wait 10-15 min for another drop off or pick up, so do plan accordingly, especially if you're on a schedule. The room walls are thin which was only a problem when the neighbor on the first night of our stay blasted their television so loudly at 11:30 pm that we felt like we were watching the movie in our room. The front desk handled this immediately upon request and were apologetic, even though it was not the hotel's fault. Otherwise, you can hear guests return or leave, but most guests are courteous and conduct themselves quietly. Every staff person we encountered was incredibly friendly, professional, and attentive - all the valet attendants, front desk representatives, bartender at Inkwell, hostess and servers at the Union restaurant, and housekeeping staff. Our only complaint is that the towels never seemed to dry in the bathroom. Highly recommend this hotel for vacation or business.

I love the Press and would stay there again but wish I understood the room system better

I love the Press, the location could not be better, the staff is so kind, the valet are out-of-this-world. I will stay there any time I am in Portland! The difference from 2021 (our first stay in two different rooms) to 2022 was noticeable, which may just be a matter of increased tourism following the pandemic. For instance, we did not book any special type of room in 2021, but I requested them again in 2022 and instead got a room by an elevator. I was told it was impossible to move right away b/c I'd booked the incorrect type of room for what I wanted and they were fully committed. The next day they called me at the beach and told me they could move me but weren't allowed to tell me the room number (an issue I've never encountered at other favorite hotels), only that it was smaller. It also wasn't a convenient time to move, which is why I try to move first thing and before we settle in. We opted to keep the room we had, which was ultimately fine and not as noisy as we feared. It was slightly tattier than the ones we'd had previously (one light wouldn't work without blinking, the closet door stuck, minor issues). I'm still a big fan but I wish there was a little more transparency and flexibility about room choice because, yes, it is pricey in the peak summer. But I can't say enough about the valet and how friendly and helpful and quick they are. It couldn't be easier to pull into this hotel. I love how thoughtfully designed the rooms generally are, and the little writerly quotes throughout are nice touches.

Nice but not worth the money

Reviewed 30 august, 2022

We had a totally fine stay. The hotel is beautiful but it's very basic. To spend the extra cost to stay here vs. an "average" hotel felt like a waste. I had always wanted to stay here because it looked so cool, but I wish I saved the extra money it cost to stay here vs. another place. Staff was nice. I was afraid the standard room we got would be very small but it was average hotel size. Room showed a lot of wear and tear. The king bed also seemed small for a king. We ate at the restaurant for breakfast and it was not good- I do not recommend going to breakfast here as it's way overpriced and like I said, just not good. There's a million other locations close by for breakfast- go there. The location was very good, easy walk to everything, and the valet service was quick and helpful.

Quiet and relaxing

Reviewed 20 august, 2022

I spent two nights here for a simple getaway. Yes, it might be a pricey place to stay, but we're only on this earth for a short while. I decided it might be nice to spoil myself with a nice hotel room. The hotel is within easy walking distance to the waterfront. Room was very clean, just the right size for me, and not once did I hear anyone else in other rooms. I did hear the firetrucks, as my room was on the side of the fire station, but that didn't bother me. Staff was very friendly and attentive. I really liked the nods to the buildings past when it was used for the Portland Press, such as a wall covered in old style typewriters. The decor struck me as quite tasteful and classy, and I enjoyed the artwork in my room. I'd definitely come stay again if I visit Portland.
