A hidden gem

This was such an amazing find. This small boutique hotel is a marvel as one enters from the unpretentious street. This old house has been renovated in a modern but elegant way with comfort in mind. What makes a good place great is always the staff and here the three young women who handle everything were so helpful and welcoming that this is what we will always remember, apart from the lovely breakfast that was served in the tranquility of the small lush garden and the very comfortable and well-appointed bedroom en-suite. We had a very enjoyable stay.
Living like a local

This little gem is a bit off the beaten path, but is perfect for someone searching to feel like a local. Sites were still within walking distance, but it is located on a residential street and not a row of hotels. Hospitality is a bit slow, as you have to wait on one person running the entire place, but they were always friendly and accommodating. We were upgraded to a beautiful and enormous room with a tub overlooking the garden that was visited by adorable local cats. The room made us feel right at home and the decor was bohemian and funky. The breakfast in the ground floor was nothing fabulous, but pasteis de nata bakeries were just around the corner to save the day. Loved this place and would highly recommend.

I booked 3 nights at Malmerendas for my boyfriend’s 30th birthday after reading all the great reviews - however we had a very different experience. For £150 a night I would expected more - there was no conditioner, tissues or safe (quite basic amenities) and you have to pay for the coffee in your room. The breakfast was very basic. The fresh bread was nice, but the ham, cheese and juice etc were straight out of a packet or can. For a ‘boutique’ hotel It wouldn’t take much to source some fresh local produce. It also felt rationed, and became somewhat awkward since we had to constantly get up to ask for more milk, butter, water etc. Nothing is left on the side. No one asked how our stay was, and having told them it was my boyfriend’s birthday in advance it would have been nice if our stay was made to feel special, considering there’s only 5 guests at any one time. However, the design of the hotel is lovely, it’s just a shame the overall experience wasn’t.
Excellent place to stay in Porto

I changed to Malmerendas the last minute and was so glad I did. Excellent location: very close to the metro which you can take to go to the airport, easy walk to the river area but far enough that you do not have noise of the tourist crowds. Miguel was a great host and gave recommendations for several excellent restaurants. Room was big, clean and very quite. Breakfast was also very good. Would definitely recommend and will stay there again in the future.
