Unpleasant neighborhood, far from the center and outdated

I became really surprised when I arrived at the hotel, as its location is in a not so nice place in Porto. The deception continued during the check in and in the room. Very simple and outdated, TV did not work. Breakfast ok. If you don't like to walk, please don't stay in this hotel.

Up quite a hill!!

While the hotel and the staff were great - getting to the address was difficult. Rua da Allegria is a long steep hill with all traffic coming down - so no chance of an easy bus ride. There IS a Metro within walking distance but there is NO Tourist Office at the city bus station

Extremely rude and unfriendly management - shocked
Reviewed 24 february, 2020
I have just visited the Tryp Centro hotel in Porto with a group of students. I am saddened and dismayed by the unbelievable and completely unnecessary rudeness of the Manager on reception and what would appear to be the manager of the breakfast facilities. We were in Porto for a Model United Nations conference and had some of our highest achieving and best behaved students with us, on the premise of hard work. Despite this, from our arrival these young people were spoken down to by the manager on reception. This included the lady demanding that they each hand over 50 euros in cash as a deposit, despite there being no mention of this at all beforehand. Needless to say, none of them did give her anything, which indicates that this was not an official procedure. She spoke rudely to the students, to myself and my colleague as well as to her own colleagues. She was a truly unpleasant first impression of this hotel. Some of our students who then had to work into the evening approached this lady to ask her if they might have some boiling water for their Pot Noodles. She informed them that this would cost them 5 euros each. This is of course far more than if they were to order a tea with boiling water through room service! My colleague happened to have brought a travel kettle so we managed to get round this but the lady then refused them to have forks until we intervened and then she grudgingly handed some over. The breakfast itself was perfectly adequate but the manager here was again extremely unfriendly and unpleasant. As we were taking care of young people, we were called out of breakfast one morning to resolve a situation. When we tried to get back in, this lady wouldn't allow us to consume anything further apart from one coffee. This is despite the fact that it was the end of breakfast and there were fresh cakes that were obviously going to go to waste. She even told my colleague to put the food that she had taken back on the display, speaking to her as if she was a naughty child. This is quite simply embarrassing and appalling behaviour that I would never expect to see from the service industry. She then spent the rest of breakfast giving us dirty looks, so much so that one of the girls who worked here came over and apologised. Overall, a horrible experience to see two totally unpleasant individuals wield power over staff and customers.

We've had such a great experience at this hotel, rooms are big and very tidy, sufficient plgs in the room with a great breakfast. Location not 'n center of town and does require a 15 to 20 minute walk downhill.
