Could/Should Be Much Better

I hate leaving mediocre reviews but it is what it is here. The story here is that this hotel has plenty of potential to live up to the Renaissance name but currently does not. I'm lifetime Platinum, currently Titanium, travel all over the country for work, blah, blah, blah, and I'm a total loyalist to the Marriot brand. But I won't be returning on my next trip to RI (I travel there every couple months and stay for at least a week each time). The Good: 1. As others have noted, the Valet guys/gals here are outstanding. Valet is very quick no matter when you arrive or leave. 2. The common areas are very nice (as seen in pictures). Typical Renaissance tasteful luxury and decor. The building itself is also gorgeous, especially if you arrive at night. 3. The rooms are large, plenty of room in to spread out (more on the rooms below). The Bad: 1. The thermostat in the room does not allow you to set a temp (at least mine didn't). Oh it DISPLAYS a temp, but when you set it to heat or cool and press the temp up/down buttons, the numbers don't change meaning you just get the "warmer" or "cooler" temp that you get. It does work, those are just your only two options. Making that even worse is the fact that rooms have those awful motion sensors which will shut off your AC in the middle of the night. I woke up in a sauna each of the 5 nights I was there and it was NOT warm outside (got down to the 30s at night). Part of the issue may also be that I was placed in a "corner room" that had one VERY small window. 2. The location. Ignore the "downtown" description of this hotel, it may be on the outskirts but it is NOT downtown. It is on a little hill that will cost you a .7 mile walk (each way) on a graded hill to get to anything downtown. There is a CVS at the mall next door but it closes at 7pm or 8pm depending on the night of the week. The market at the hotel by the front desk is VERY limited. 3. The restaurant at the hotel is VERY hit or miss. The first night I was there, it was quiet and the female bartender was great. The other night I tried it was a Wednesday night and it was PACKED. The male bartender was completely stressed out and very unfriendly. This is a business hotel and you can tell it's all business people congregating after their work day. I was also told the pizza was fantastic but it was burned on the bottom and had texture and taste similar to a frozen pizza. I doubt it was but I was really surprised at the lack of quality. The Ugly: 1. Housekeeping standards were VERY low. I don't mean daily housekeeping - you have to request that and I didn't bother. I'm talking about how they leave/set the room for a new guest to check-in. The comforter had what looked like a dried bloodstain on it (about the side of a walnut). Might have been red wine or cranberry, but whatever, it was gross. The ceiling above my shower was very discolored and needed to be cleaned. There were small amounts of black substance (mold/mildew?) around the bottom edges of the shower caulking. They don't tuck the sheets in when they make the bed and the comforter is in a zipped cover which completely moves around while you sleep. I had to unzip, rearrange and rezip my comforter every morning (while avoiding the dried blood stain). I have no doubt the hotel would have remedied most/all of these cleanliness issues but why should it be an issue in the first place. Blood? Mold? Were they? Don't know, don't care, it's just way below the Renaissance standard regardless. I know staffing is tough and people are overworked. I can appreciate that. But charging full retail for a room because you're a Renaissance, and then not maintaining the Renaissance standard is just not acceptable in my opinion. I walked by the Residence Inn while I was downtown for an event and that hotel (as well as the Courtyard) is beautiful and true downtown locations. Although they are lower tier hotels, I will be staying at one of them next month. The Renaissance just didn't keep their promise to private a clean and comfortable stay, much less a luxurious one.
Great Room at Comfortable Stay at the Renaissance Providence

We found the Renaissance Downtown Providence to be a luxuriously appointed hotel with a friendly and efficient staff. Our King with Capital View room was spacious, comfortable with a soothing interior design plus a sleek and posh bathroom. Luxury amenities include Aveda soap, shoe-shine and sewing kit. However, the shampoo and body wash was inferior. We enjoyed both of our meals at the Public Kitchen. Particular mention to our morning waitress Sobern who delivered our breakfast in an efficient, energetic and enthusiastic fashion. My wife raved about her egg, bacon and hash browns, all components of which were perfectly cooked and flavorful. The Fettucine Alfredo at dinner was delicious. The Public Kitchen is a welcome spot at the end of a long day. Our room was always cleaned in a speedy fashion. The elevators arrived seconds after you pressed the button. The valets were on their toes and quick to open doors for us upon arrival or departure. Special mention to Ben the Valet who's car service referral enabled us to safely escape the impending tropical storm Henri. His resourcefulness and preparedness are a credit to the Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel. The pantry is a welcome feature and provides guests with a helpful way to pick up snacks and sundries without journeying to the CVS at the bottom of a steep hill. The Renaissance Providence is well maintained, thoughtfully designed with many unique flourishes accenting the hotel's Masonic Temple origins. If your plans take you to Providence I highly recommend a stay at the Renaissance.

King Room #237 only 2 towels that are very thin and in need of replacement...we had to call the front desk and ask for two more. No lamp on the smallish table/desk No outlet at the table/desk so unable to plug in laptop (and no light to work by!) Only plug is on bedside lamp so have to sit bedside to use laptop. Almost forgot...handset on phone does not work. After several tries we figured out that we had to go on speakerphone for anyone to hear us. Icing on the cake...we were out all day and returned at 8 pm to uncleaned/untouched room. Called the front desk and was told "we only clean rooms upon request due to COVID". No one told us..WTF!!! Whomever runs this place needs to be fired and replaced. We will never stay here again and will go back to Hilton where we have had better experiences, even during COVID.
Breakfast, laundry room, nice room

As a standard Hilton hotel, they have facilities as expected. There are parking lots behind the hotel if you cannot find parking spaces on the street. Nice location. There is a laundry room. The detergent ran out and I had to go to a seven eleven shop located two blocks away.
Nice hotel, would visit again

Clean and quiet hotel. Great location, 2 minute walk to the providence place mall and across the street from capital building. Staff was nice and friendly. Only valet parking offered, but not to much more than off site parking at the mall.
