Canto Del Sol… avoid this place

Reviewed 19 may, 2022

I called the receptionist and asked for an extended check out for my daughter who is disabled and we needed to stay in the room a couple of hours longer. Anyway, the “gentleman” ( Julio) hung up on my daughter. When we went down to reception, and ask why we were denied a two hour late check out, he just flipped out and threatened me with calling the police… really? And he is the night manager.? If that is how this hotel treats and threatens guests, spend your hard earned money somewhere else.

Sweet staff

A Mixed review

Background - I first came here about 4 years ago and had a superb time, I have been waiting to return although the pandemic did delay this somewhat. I loved this hotel for its location, its many A la carte restaurants and its large and quiet rooms. Sadly its only the location that remains. Location - Superb, 20 min walk to the centre of town and the Malecon. 15 mins from the airport and 10 mins in a cab to the port. Appearance - Lacking a bit of TLC in a few places but I booked the hotel knowing it was a 3 star hotel and there was nothing that was so bad I felt any discomfort. Pools/Grounds - The hotel has numerous pools that are kept very clean. The grounds are very well maintained and inhabited by a few iguanas which make nice photo opportunities. Pool towels are provided, and can be changed regularly. Bedrooms - I did write to the hotel on all of the social media sites I could find asking for a quiet room if possible and if it would be possible to purchase a cake to celebrate our anniversary. Sadly we did not receive any replies at all. The room we had was an adequate size on the ground floor, which was quite noisy until about 11 pm. However during our 2 week stay there was 6 local weddings, and say you like about Mexicans they do love to party and on the wedding days, music and noise went on until the early hours of the morning the worst of which finished at 4 pm. I came away for a relaxing holiday and due to the fact that for at least 6 nights of my holiday I hardly got any sleep at all means that I will not be returning to this hotel. I did ask for a change of room after the first wedding only to be told, the noise would be heard wherever we went and it was a wedding after all? not very sympathetic. The room did have a large comfy bed, plenty of wardrobe space, a safe and TV, which had quite a few English speaking programmes. The rooms did not have a fridge or any facilities for making hot drinks. Bathroom - Had a rainfall shower, hairdryer and small pots of toiletries, but my tip would be to bring your own. Staff in General - Very good , always smiling, restaurant staff very helpful and remembered our drinks regularly. The only exception to this would be the pool bar staff and the pool snack bar staff, these staff were not unpleasant at all, but they did give preferential service to their Mexican clients. Restaurants - The main buffet was open air and I did not like the fact that every meal time birds were flying in and out over the tables, and settling on the bread section which was largely uncovered. I did not have any bread at all during my visit for fear of getting ill, and it probably helped my waist size a bit. We were really looking forward to re visiting the Surf and Turf restaurant and were disappointed to find this restaurant and the Ceviche restaurant were permanently closed. This left only 3 other restaurants, and we were allocated 7 visits during our 2 week stay, which was fair enough. These were : Italian - Good choice of dishes and they served a lovely steak dish, Main server Alex was superb. Mexican - Another good venue, great choice and I thoroughly recommend the Mahi Mahi, Migel and Javier were great servers. Asian - Our least favourite as the main courses were a bit limited but the Sushi was exceptional. Covid - The hotel was very Covid aware, sanitizers were everywhere and masks had to be worn in reception, and all the restaurants ( apart from at the tables ). Activities - The usual day activities were available, namely water volleyball, Aqua aerobics, quizzes etc . The evening entertainment was mixed, the show nights were very good, but the bingo and karaoke evenings were not my cup of tea Beach - long and narrow but very pleasant, the sea can be rough so take care but there were some fabulous sunsets over the sea at night. The beach is full of vendors plying their wares but unlike other places I have been they were not pushy and a polite no thanks was met with an ok and they moved on, not with a tirade of abuse that I have experienced in parts of India and Africa. Weddings - As I mentioned before they are a spectacle, frequent and go on very late and is the main reason I would not return to this hotel. WIFI - Good throughout the hotel

nice but very noisey all hours of the night, every night

Gr:eat staff, clean safe room and facilities. But no quire hour, or quiet hour enforced. Yes people go to vacation, but people also think their hotel room is to get some sleep. People out partying, yelling, running, LOUD conversations at all hours of the night. Had to call everynight to ask partiers to take their party inside to their private rooms, 1:30 am, 3 am and 5:30 am. Very frustating

Good value, but room a bit tired and aweful view

Reviewed 5 april, 2022

The first room was on the northern side of the hotel, with a view of the ancient air conditioning equipment of the hotel next door. The room was quiet, but we were able to move after discovering a blanket of black mould under the sink. The second room was better and had a view of the pool and a sideways view of the sea. It was noisier, but the music always stopped at 11pm. Quite why they have to play loud thumping music all day, by the pool, escapes me, but some people must enjoy it. There was a bottle of water in the room, but no hot drink facilities. There was a sink in a semi-partitioned part of the room, with a wall-mounted hair dryer (which didn't work) and a separate shower / toilet. There were two double beds, and two chairs at a table. A flat-screen TV was mounted on the wall with a few English news channels. There was a buffet restaurant, a "pop-up" a la carte restaurant that sometimes appeared near the beach end of the pool area, an a la carte Japanese steak house and Italian restaurant. The last two are not easy to find and not signposted, so ask for directions if you book these restaurants. The buffet restaurant food varied each day. The a la cartes kept the same menu. Evening entertainment was usually outside, except when there was a wedding party and reception. Entertainment was good. There is a narrow strip of sandy beach, but the tidal current can be strong. There was also a warning about jellyfish. If you want a poolside chair or sunlounger near the pool, get up early to reserve your place!
